Unforgettable Arctic Adventures
Our trip across the Kola Peninsula was an unforgettable adventure through some of the most breathtaking and raw landscapes we’ve ever seen.
We began with a hike to Krestovaya Mountain in Kandalaksha – described as “easy,” but definitely more challenging than expected. Still, even the halfway point rewarded us with panoramic views of the White Sea and surrounding islands.
Next was Kolvitskiy Waterfall, a dramatic cascade hidden in Arctic wilderness. The hike from the village was short but beautiful, and the falls themselves were majestic – wild, loud, and unforgettable.
In Teriberka, we explored the iconic stone beach, also known as the “beach with dragon eggs.” Giant round stones, wind from the Arctic Ocean, and surreal landscapes made it feel like another planet. Nearby, the Graveyard of Ships offered a haunting contrast, with rusted skeletons of vessels scattered across the shore – eerie and deeply atmospheric.
We had lunch at Hotel Ter’, where the food was good and the view even better. Service was a little cold at first, but improved with time. In Murmansk, our best meal was at Terrasa Restaurant – everything from wild boar to seafood was outstanding, and our waiter Vlad made the experience even more special.
Right outside Murmansk Railway Station, we discovered Pelmen House, a hidden gem for dumpling lovers. Blue dumplings, reindeer pelmeni, and warm service made it a must-visit spot.
We also visited the nuclear icebreaker Lenin, an awe-inspiring engineering marvel docked in Murmansk’s harbor, surrounded by food trucks and scenic views.
Our stay at a “ship cabin-themed” hotel Vatslav was disappointing – cramped rooms, poor service, and zero ventilation. Definitely not for claustrophobic travelers. But other places more than made up for it.
From adorable reindeer and huskies at a local farm to the mighty Batareyskiy Waterfall after a 4 km eco-trail hike – this region is full of magical moments.
The Russian North is raw, powerful, and absolutely worth exploring.
