Thun travel guide and discussion

🌞 Switzerland 🇨🇭 | You’ll really regret not coming here! 🏔️ After 5 days of exploring Switzerland 🇨🇭, I checked off: 📍 Thun 🌊 📍 Brienz 🚂 📍 Interlaken 🪂 📍 Lungern 💙 📍 Grindelwald 🏔️ 📍 Hiking the Jungfrau 🥾 But! The most stunning place is still the town of Spiez on Lake Thun!!! 💖 💫 It’s peaceful and gentle 🏰 And hides some of the world’s most breathtaking lake and mountain views 🌅 Every scene looks like a beautiful oil painting~ I’m so glad I randomly booked 3 nights in Spiez this time❗️ Every glance out of that unbeatable lake view window Is a soul-healing, stunning sight 🏞️ It’s truly a hidden gem! 🌟 My personal recommendations: · Spend the early morning daydreaming on a bench by the lake · Watch the sunset from the castle at dusk · Stay at a lake view hotel! (The one we stayed at felt like a postcard when we opened the curtains!) If you’re going to Switzerland 🇨🇭, don’t miss this magical town! Trust me! It’s definitely worth stopping for~💕

Girls! Just got back from Switzerland. Summer in Interlaken is absolutely amazing! This place is like God spilled a palette of colors. The two lakes have different shades—one Tiffany blue, the other peacock blue. I didn’t want to leave! 🏔️ Amazing location The guesthouse is right in the center of Interlaken, just a few steps from the east station, but the soundproofing is excellent—no train noise at all. The balcony faces Höhematte Park, a huge lawn area. Lying in bed, you can see the three peaks of the Jungfrau region. I screamed the moment I opened the curtains in the morning! 🚂 Best way to get around Tested and proven! You must buy the Swiss Travel Pass. Four days cost about 280 CHF (latest price for 2026). You get 25% off Jungfrau tickets, free rides to Harder Kulm viewing platform, and unlimited lake cruises! Download the SBB Mobile app—it shows real-time train schedules and lets you buy tickets. Swiss trains are so punctual that if it says 3:15, it’s exactly 3:15, down to the second! ⛰️ Must-do hardcore routes Day 1: Head straight to Jungfrau! Take the train from the east station to Grindelwald, then transfer to the Eiger Express. The new V-shaped cable car opened in 2024 is super smooth. It takes only 15 minutes to reach the Eiger Glacier station, then switch to the cogwheel train for a 40-minute ride to the summit. Round-trip tickets cost 235–260 CHF in peak season. It’s pricey but totally worth it! The Sphinx observation deck offers a 360-degree unobstructed view. The Aletsch Glacier lies right below, and on a clear day, you can see France and Germany! Day 2: Have some thrills at First! Take the cable car from Grindelwald up to First. The First Cliff Walk along the cliff is free. The glass walkway hanging in midair is nerve-wracking but perfect for photos. For more excitement, try the First Flyer zipline, First Glider, or mountain cart racing down from the top—so much fun! Each activity costs about 29–35 CHF. Get there early to line up because popular rides sell out by noon. 🚢 Lake cruises on both lakes are a must Lake Thun and Lake Brienz have completely different vibes! Lake Thun offers an elegant route, departing from the west station pier. It stops at Spiez, Oberhofen Castle, and ends at Thun old town. The whole trip takes 2 hours and 10 minutes. Don’t miss Spiez! The angle of the lake bay perfectly captures the castle and snowy mountain reflections—every shot looks like wallpaper! Lake Brienz is more natural and pristine, with unreal mint-green water. The cruise leaves from the east station pier and takes about 1 hour to reach Brienz town. You can get off at Giessbach Falls and take Europe’s oldest mountain railway up to Mount Rothorn. The vintage steam train against the Alpine backdrop creates an unforgettable atmosphere! 🌄 Sunset at Harder Kulm is a must Right next to the east station, the cable car takes 8 minutes to the top at 1,322 meters elevation, overlooking all of Interlaken and both lakes. The three peaks of Jungfrau are right in front of you. The observation deck extends into a platform with transparent glass underfoot—thrilling and perfect for photos! It’s open until 5 PM in summer. I recommend going up at 4 PM to watch the sunset turn the snow-capped mountains pink. That moment made me cry. 💡 Practical tips Switzerland is really expensive. Bottled water in supermarkets costs 2–3 CHF, so bring a water bottle to fill with free Alpine spring water! In July, daylight lasts very long—darkness only falls around 9 PM, so you can make the most of your day. Sunscreen! Sunscreen! Sunscreen! The high altitude means strong UV rays. I didn’t apply any on the first day and got sunburned. It’s below freezing at the Jungfrau summit, so even in July, bring a windbreaker or light down jacket.

If Thun were a Swiss poem, it would be written with a turquoise lake, a historic castle, and the majestic Alps standing silently in the distance. This small lakeside town exudes an "effortless" charm. Everything feels naturally gentle, peaceful, and romantic. It is perfect for anyone wanting to experience a warm and lively side of Switzerland. Must-Visit Spots in Thun 1. Thun Castle An 800-year-old white castle standing proudly on a hill in the city center. From the top, you can take in panoramic views of the old town's Swiss-style rooftops and Lake Thun stretching all the way to the Alps. 2. Lake Thun The crystal-clear blue lake is the beating heart of this town. You can: Take a scenic boat cruise, Relax by the lake, Or cycle along the shoreline. Every corner offers surreal views of the mountains and charming Swiss chalets. 3. Thun Old Town The old town area of Thun is full of classic European charm. Narrow cobblestone streets, cozy cafes, ancient fountains, and pastel-colored historic buildings turn an ordinary stroll... into a truly unforgettable moment. 4. Oberhofen Castle One of the most romantic lakeside castles in Switzerland. Set right on the water, it features beautiful flower gardens with the Alps as a stunning backdrop. An absolute paradise for photography lovers.

Don’t miss the Brienz Lake boat ride, where the scenery is absolutely stunning, with crystal-clear blue water. The boat passes by the filming location of "Love’s Forced Landing," which looks great from the boat without needing to get off. On the return trip, the boat stops at Bönigen, a charming and less-known town with breathtaking views and delicious Italian food to try. Even though the water level in Lungern is low in early spring, the town itself remains picturesque, and the locals are very friendly, making it a great place for family fun. Day 4: Grindelwald - First Mountain In early spring, the dreamy slopes of Grindelwald have a yellowish grass color, but the blue hour scenery remains stunning. First Mountain is sunny and perfect for hiking and exploring with kids. Day 5: Lucerne - Mount Rigi - Weggis Town This day is incredibly amazing! Be sure to take your kids to Mount Rigi. The cogwheel train ride up offers spectacular views; we recommend sitting on the left side facing forward. Korean BBQ Restaurant Aare, located in Interlaken, Switzerland, is a Korean barbecue restaurant situated right next to the Aare River and behind Casino Interlaken. It's a place where you can enjoy the authentic flavors of Korea while taking in the stunning scenery of the Jungfrau region.⭐️ ✌🏻Address: Strandbadstrasse 15, Interlaken 3800, Switzerland 🇨🇭The terrace offers a charming view of the Aare River, and the overall atmosphere is clean and comfortable.

Starting from Geneva, Geneva Canton, what I thought would be an ordinary trip turned out to be full of surprises, as if stepping into a hybrid world of fairy tales and movies! 🏞️ Thun Castle & Thun Town Thun became one of my favorite towns on this trip. Nestled by Lake Thun, its streets are lined with colorful houses and flower-filled balconies, along with a charming wooden bridge and hidden fountains. At the heart of the town stands Thun Castle, with its white walls and red roof. Climbing the castle tower offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire lake region. 🌟 Exclusive experience recommendation: Sit at a café in the old town, order a cappuccino, and watch the snow-capped mountains shimmer in the distance—100% therapeutic. 🚞 Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe Riding the world's highest-altitude cogwheel train to the summit of Jungfraujoch was the most spectacular part of this journey. Departing from Interlaken, the train winds through snow-capped mountain tunnels and glacial platforms, finally reaching the "Top of Europe" at 3,454 meters above sea level. You can visit the Sphinx Observatory, standing on the edge of the Alpine ridge to overlook the glaciers, or step into the Ice Palace and walk through ice tunnels adorned with crystal sculptures—like entering the real world of "Frozen." 🌟 Note: The thin air at the summit may be challenging, so take it slow—every step is worth savoring. 🌲 Lauterbrunnen Valley, Interlaken District Dubbed the "most beautiful valley in Switzerland," it lives up to its reputation. The entire valley feels like a place where fairies dwell: 72 waterfalls cascade vertically from towering cliffs, with mist swirling through the valley—serene yet awe-inspiring. The most spectacular among them is Staubbach Falls, plunging nearly 300 meters directly into the valley, making it one of Europe's highest free-falling waterfalls. You can walk along the trail behind the falls and feel the power of the spray rushing toward you. 🌊 Trümmelbach Falls This is Lauterbrunnen's most mysterious spot. Ten waterfalls are hidden inside the mountain, formed by glacial meltwater, roaring through the rocks like nature's underground symphony. After taking an elevator inside the falls, you can stand in narrow stone caves and watch the waterfalls pour down beneath you—deafening but utterly mesmerizing. One of the few "internal mountain waterfalls" open to the public in the world—highly recommended! 📌 Final thoughts: This isn't a traditional "checklist tour of Switzerland" but a journey into the intersection of nature, culture, and dreams. What amazed me most wasn't just the snow-capped mountains and lakes, but the hidden beauty waiting quietly to be discovered.

#europetrip #thun #switzerland Visiting Thun on a drizzling day was a charming and peaceful experience. As we crossed the iconic Thun Bridge, the gentle rain added a soft shimmer to the wooden structure, while the river beneath flowed serenely, its surface rippled by the raindrops. Walking along the quiet riverside, we soaked in the tranquil beauty of the town, with its picturesque buildings and distant view of the Alps cloaked in mist. The drizzle painted the scene in soft hues, giving everything a magical, dreamy quality. Despite the gray skies, Thun’s charm shone through, making the walk a calming and unforgettable journey through its quieter side.

#europetrip #switzerland #thun #Thuncastle During our visit to Thun, we couldn’t resist exploring the iconic Thun Castle, a 12th-century medieval fortress that stands proudly atop a hill overlooking the town. Included in the Swiss Travel Pass, it felt like a perfect blend of history and value. As we climbed up to the castle, we were excited to discover its well-preserved knight’s hall, fascinating exhibits, and impressive medieval architecture. Reaching the top was an absolute highlight—standing in the tower, we were treated to breathtaking views of Thun’s charming rooftops, the sparkling Lake Thun, and the majestic Alps in the distance. The climb was more than worth it, and the castle’s blend of history and scenery made it an unforgettable stop on our journey.

Switzerland is a picturesque and poetic place, and it is beautiful to walk around casually. There are many small towns along the lake near Interlaken, and many magnificent buildings have been preserved. Thun castle in Thun is open to visitors. Visitors only need to walk to the tower on the top floor of the castle to have a panoramic view of the beautiful scenery nearby. #SwissTravel

My trip to Switzerland has come to an end. I was very lucky to have many days of clear, sunny weather. The scenery was breathtaking, and these photos are straight from the camera with no editing. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Well-known pros and cons: 💯 Beautiful scenery Public transportation is convenient and punctual. Kid-friendly, pet-friendly, accessible for people with disabilities, and outdoor-friendly. ❌ Expensive and the food is not great (the Coop stores found at every transport hub make up for it a little). 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 [Männlichen - Wengen - Lauterbrunnen] The hike from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg is truly beginner-friendly, with a gentle downhill path the whole way. You can enjoy panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains throughout the entire route. After reaching Kleine Scheidegg, you can easily visit Wengen, Lauterbrunnen, and Mürren along the way. I highly recommend this for anyone visiting Switzerland for the first time, those short on time, or those planning to summit the Jungfrau! The scenery is so beautiful that even someone like me, who doesn't love outdoor activities, wanted to hike. This section is truly super beginner-friendly. [Thun - Spiez - Bern] Spiez is a small town. By comparison, I prefer Thun, which is a small city with more places to explore. This itinerary lets you experience local Swiss life and culture. The best part is that the Lake Thun cruise and the passes for the castles in both towns are completely free, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll. Since I stayed in Bern, I visited it as well. If you don't want a packed, high-intensity itinerary, you can skip it. [Stoos Hike] I posted a note about Stoos earlier—I recommend it! If you have time for an in-depth trip, I suggest planning a hike. It doesn't have to be Stoos (for example, the Tour du Mont Blanc). Hiking and enjoying the scenery in such a beautiful setting, and immersing yourself in the local outdoor lifestyle with friends, is very worthwhile! 🌟🌟🌟 [Brienz Steam Train 🚂 and Boat Cruise 🚢] As mentioned in my previous note, the highlight is the experience of enjoying the view from the train, and you need to arrive early to snag a good seat. If your itinerary is tight, consider whether it's worth it. [First Mountain & Pfingstegg] This time I tried the First Mountain Cart and the First Flyer, as well as the Pfingstegg toboggan run. I recommend the First Mountain Cart 🙆🏻‍♀️, but the First Flyer is both expensive and boring 🙅🏻‍♀️. The toboggan run is okay, but if you add in the cost of the round-trip cable car, it's not very cost-effective, so I don't recommend it 🙅🏻‍♀️. Especially if you have to wait in line for a long time—like the two or three hours during the National Day holiday—I suggest skipping it; it's not worth it. [Matterhorn] ⚠️ The Matterhorn is very weather-dependent. I suggest checking the weather in advance and planning flexibly. Don't be a gambler like me and book your hotel too far in advance. Hotels in Zermatt with a view of the Matterhorn are super expensive! Of course, Switzerland doesn't look good anywhere when it's cloudy or rainy. Setting aside the weather, I still give it three stars because Zermatt is very commercialized, with construction and hotel building everywhere, so the experience was just average. If you don't hike, going up the mountain is just for taking photos, and the hiking scenery is just okay. Also, Zermatt is far from the major tourist areas, so if you don't stay there, your itinerary will be very intense. If you are short on time, I don't recommend it. 🗻 Overall, I still most recommend the Lake Lucerne cruise and the snow mountain activities in the Interlaken area; enjoy the lake and mountain views of the Alps. My biggest regret this time was not going paragliding, especially since I didn't do it on the clear, sunny days! Actually, the unit price for paragliding in Switzerland is cheaper than indoor flying experiences in Shenzhen. You must go skiing during the snow season! I don't recommend visiting cities; the European style isn't distinct enough (like Baroque or Gothic architecture), and shopping in Lucerne is enough.

Traverse 3 countries in one trip: Swiss lakes and mountains, French Mont Blanc, and Italian lake districts and wine regions, a loop route with no backtracking. 2. Family-friendly road trip pace: Most daily drives are 1–2.5 hours, with the longest being 3 hours, so you won't be rushing, making it suitable for families. 3. Rich experiences, not just sightseeing: Underground waterfalls, paragliding, cheese/chocolate factories, wineries, boat trips, and mountain cable cars, combining activity and relaxation. 4. Collection of hidden gem towns: Wengen (car-free fairyland town), Weggis, Varenna, and Stresa, avoiding large tour groups. 📌Road trip practical tips ✅ Documents: Prepare an International Driving Permit + passport, as border crossings may have random checks. ✅ Highways: You need to buy a Swiss motorway vignette, while Italian/French highways charge by section, so have a credit card ready in advance. ✅ Border crossing: Switzerland is part of the Schengen Area but not the EU. When entering and exiting borders like Chiasso, pay attention to your belongings and be prepared for occasional stops for inspection. ✅ Town reminder: Wengen is a car-free town! Park your car in Lauterbrunnen and transfer to the cable car to go up; you cannot drive into the town. ✅ Season: August is summer in the Alps, with comfortable temperatures, but the weather in the mountains is changeable, so carry a windbreaker. ✅ Parking: Parking spaces in lake towns are limited, so prioritize hotels with private parking. 💡Travel reflections This is a very classic Alpine family road trip loop. You can immerse yourself in the lakes and mountains of Switzerland, head to the foot of Mont Blanc, and experience the romance and winery culture of the Italian lake district. Change the scenery every day, with snow-capped mountains, lakes, medieval towns, and delicious food and wine all arranged. No rushing, just slow travel, suitable for families who love nature, food, and wandering through towns.

I would rank this as one of the most romantic and stunning locations, looking exactly like something out of a fairytale: "Schadau Castle." This historic, luxury mansion, featuring a blend of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, stands majestically on the banks of Lake Thun in the town of Thun, Switzerland. The surrounding atmosphere is incredibly serene and peaceful. The vast, lush greenery of the public park (Schadaupark) stretches along the smooth, turquoise waters, creating one of the most exquisite slices of heaven on earth. Here, you can breathe in the crisp, fresh air, feel the chilling breeze blowing from the mountain peaks, and let your eyes wander across the most striking views of the Alps. The true masterpiece of this trip is the mansion itself, built from cream-and-orange pastel stone that reaches toward the sky. A major highlight for your social media content is capturing a shot looking straight from the front lawn where a classic vintage Beetle is parked, or from the stone walkway by the water adorned with vibrant pink peonies. On a sunny day, the sunlight helps accentuate the architecture and the rounded dome of Mount Niesen, making them stand out beautifully against the vast horizon. Take a closer look at the intricate ancient wood-carved pillars and the charming little lighthouse fortress along the shore. Walking along the water allows you to truly take in the vast splendor and create a travel story that is sure to catch everyone's eye. 💡 Travel Tips for Your Visit: · The castle is located just a short distance from Thun railway station. You can easily take a leisurely stroll along the river to reach the park. The surrounding terrain is flat and easy to walk. You should come prepared with a hat, sunglasses, and comfortable sneakers. The safety railings along the bank are well-maintained and very secure throughout the path. · For your outfit, I recommend bold colors like vibrant orange, bright red, or a flowy white dress. These colors will help you stand out elegantly in photos against the lush green grass and the deep blue of Lake Thun, ensuring a perfectly composed look.

This is the popular Schadau Castle (Schloss Schadau), a historic 19th-century castle located in Thun, Canton Bern, Switzerland. · Location: Seestrasse 45, Thun, Switzerland (on the south side of the Aare River near Lake Thun). · Architecture: Built between 1846 and 1854 in the Gothic Revival style by architect Pierre-Charles Dusillon for banker Abraham Denis Alfred de Rougemont. · Current Use: Owned by the city of Thun since 1925, it currently operates as the Schloss Schadau - Swiss Historic Hotel with a restaurant and the Swiss Gastronomy Museum. #hotdiscussions #naturalwonders #travel2026

Spiez is an incredibly quiet and comfortable lakeside town. Many travelers only come here to transfer, but this time we used the SBB Station-to-Station luggage service. Being luggage-free allowed us to actually stay and explore properly. From Spiez station, you can overlook the castle and Lake Thun. A 15-minute walk downhill leads to the lakeside and castle area, or you can take a bus if you'd rather not walk. 🏰 Spiez Castle The castle is situated right by Lake Thun, surrounded by vineyards; the exterior scenery alone is beautiful. If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, the castle museum is free to visit. There are also lockers and restrooms inside, which is very convenient for travelers mid-journey. The castle itself has about 1,300 years of history, evolving from a medieval fortress into a noble residence. The exhibitions inside are more refined than I imagined—they don't just display antiques, but introduce the people and lifestyles of different eras. I was most impressed by the magnificent banquet hall built in 1614, which houses portraits of the von Erlach family. The castle owner at the time, Franz Ludwig von Erlach, and his two wives had a total of 37 children! Looking at that row of family portraits, you can immediately sense the scale and status of the aristocracy back then. Finally, you must climb the castle tower. On the middle floor, you can even dress up as a medieval noble for free photos!! At the very top, you get a 360-degree view of Spiez Bay, Lake Thun, the vineyards, and the Alps. On a clear day, even Mount Niesen across the lake is breathtaking. 🚢 After the castle, take a boat directly to Thun I love this itinerary: Spiez Castle → Lakeside → Boat to Thun The trip from Spiez to Thun takes about 45–50 minutes, stopping at lakeside towns like Gunten, Oberhofen, Hilterfingen, and Hünibach. Along the way, besides the lake views, you will pass the Lake Thun castle area: ・Spiez Castle ・Oberhofen Castle ・The Hünegg Castle area ・Schadau Castle near Thun As the boat glides along the shore, you can see local kids playing in the water and adults dining and chatting at lakeside restaurants. There aren't any massive "must-see" landmarks; instead, it's the feeling of castles, lake water, and small-town life slowly passing by that made me fall in love with Spiez. 📌 Spiez Half-Day Highlights ・Don't just transfer; stay for half a day to explore. ・It's a 15-minute walk from the station to the lake/castle. ・Free entry to Spiez Castle with the Swiss Travel Pass. ・Lockers and restrooms are available at the castle. ・Remember to climb the tower for a panoramic view of Lake Thun. ・The boat from Spiez to Thun is a smooth connection after the castle. ・The cruise takes 45–50 minutes, featuring lakeside towns and castle views. Spiez isn't as bustling as Interlaken, but it offers a peaceful sense of Swiss daily life. If your itinerary happens to include a transfer here, I think it's well worth sending your luggage ahead and dedicating a few hours to this lakeside town. 🤍

Looking back at the photos from this trip to Switzerland, I realized just how many diverse landscapes we’ve crossed. From modern cities to ancient towns; from serene lakes to scenic cruises; from deep valleys to snow-capped peaks; from lush green meadows to charming mountain villages; from scenic train rides to rolling vineyards; plus the castles, the bread, the coffee, the cheese, the chocolate, and the fruit. It was, quite simply, a rich and wonderful mix. Starting in Zurich, we first wandered through the Old Town of Bern before heading to Thun to soak in the lakeside charm. By the time we reached Interlaken, the scenery began to transform. We hopped on a cruise across Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, surrounded by majestic mountains, then headed toward Wengen, Lauterbrunnen, and Grindelwald—where valleys, waterfalls, meadows, and wooden chalets appeared scene after scene. Next, we boarded the GoldenPass Train, letting the scenery glide by the window. From lakeshores to mountain passes, from green pastures to snowy summits, the Swiss landscape seemed to shift effortlessly, like a changing canvas. In Zermatt, we took the Gornergrat Railway up into the heights. When the Matterhorn finally appeared before us, it hit me—we were truly in the heart of the Alps. Heading west, we reached Montreux, Vevey, and Lausanne. The pace shifted as we returned to the lakeside. A cruise on Lake Geneva allowed us to drift past hillsides and distant cities, fully embracing the leisurely second half of our trip. We visited the vineyards of Chexbres, looking out over the grapes toward the water. We also stopped for the castle and cheese in Gruyères, the chocolate in Broc, and all the bread, coffee, and fruit we found along the way. Finally, we arrived in Geneva. We explored the city and visited the United Nations, giving the end of our journey a deeper sense of perspective. We weren’t rushing to check off a list of landmarks. If we liked a place, we stayed a bit longer, if the view was beautiful, we lingered, if we were tired, we simply sat down to rest. That’s exactly why we love independent travel. You set your own itinerary; you decide when to slow down. And Switzerland offers so much variety, just waiting to be discovered at your own pace. We covered a lot of ground on this trip. But looking back, the moments I cherish most are the ones that weren't planned at all— Sitting on a boat on the lake, watching the mountains slowly pass by; sitting on the train, watching the scenery shift outside the window; walking through small-town streets, listening to the church bells; grabbing a coffee and a piece of bread or chocolate at a street corner; standing before the snow mountains, quietly gazing at the Matterhorn. Attractions might fade, photos will be stored away. But the paths we walked together, the views we shared, the bread, coffee, cheese, chocolate, and fruit we enjoyed, and the way we felt in those moments, those are the things that will stay with us much longer. We took our time through Switzerland. It was rich, and it was deeply fulfilling.

2-day, 1-night travel guide to Spiez, Switzerland 📍Location: Canton of Bern, Switzerland, on the southern shore of Lake Thun. Recognized as one of the most beautiful lakeside towns, backed by the pyramid-shaped Mount Niesen, vineyards, and snow-capped mountains. The core highlights are the castle, lake views, lakeside promenade, and light hiking in the vineyards. It is 20 minutes by train from Interlaken and 10 minutes from Thun. Perfect for a slow-paced vacation and avoiding the crowds in Interlaken. ⚠️Key transportation note: The town is entirely walkable, no public transport needed. For travel outside the town, rely on trains and Lake Thun cruises. We highly recommend the Swiss Travel Pass, which covers regional trains, cruises, and free admission to Spiez Castle. Best season: May–October (cruises are operating, lake views are at their best). Flowers bloom in May–June; golden autumn vineyards in September–October. Cruises stop in winter, which is better suited for train and snow-capped mountain routes. 🎫Ticket information Spiez Castle: CHF 12 (free with Swiss Travel Pass). Includes tower and medieval museum. Closed on Mondays. Castle gardens are free. Lake Thun cruises: Spiez ↔ Thun / ↔ Interlaken West. One-way takes about 1 hour. Free with Swiss Travel Pass. Individual tickets cost 30+ CHF one-way. Operates mid-April to October. Check real-time schedules on SBB Mobile. Niesen funicular: Separate ticket required (50% off with Swiss Travel Pass). Take a 5-minute train to Mülenen station, then transfer to the funicular. The town's lakeside, old town streets, and the train station viewing platform are all free. 🍜Must-eats: Rösti, pan-fried Lake Thun fish, cheese fondue, local vineyard white wine, and apple pie. For budget-friendly options, choose deli food from Coop/Migros supermarkets. 🏨Accommodation recommendations (staying in Spiez is preferred for a 2-day trip) ✅Homestays near the train station: Most convenient for transport, high cost-performance, 10-minute walk to the pier/castle. ✅Lakeside hotels (Eden / Seaside): Lake-view terraces, near the pier, great for the experience. ✅Alternative: Stay in Interlaken and take the 20-minute train back and forth. Suitable if connecting to Jungfrau, but not recommended if you are only spending two days in Spiez. Book in advance for the peak season (May–September). City tax applies. 🚌Transportation overview Major transport (core train lines) Interlaken Ost ↔ Spiez: 20-minute train, runs every 30 minutes. Most frequently used. Thun ↔ Spiez: 10-minute train, very frequent service. You can also take a cruise. Bern ↔ Spiez: 40-minute direct train. Zurich/Geneva: 2h / 2.5h direct. ✅Tip: When taking the train to Spiez, seats on the left side in the direction of travel offer the best lake views. Local transport Train station > Castle > Pier > Lakeside promenade: All downhill walking, 5–15 minutes. No transport needed. To Mount Niesen: 5-minute train from Spiez to Mülenen, then transfer to the Niesenbahn funicular. Cruises: The pier is right below the castle. Two main routes: Spiez ↔ Thun / Interlaken. Two main 2-day itineraries: Pure town & lake cruise version / Lake view + Mount Niesen light hiking version. ✅Itinerary A | Classic relaxed version (in-depth town tour + Lake Thun cruise + Thun old town; best suited for public transport/pass holders) Suitable for vacations, photography, and those who don't like hiking. This is the top choice for most people for a 2-day trip. Day 1: Arrive in Spiez > Train station panoramic view > Castle > Lakeside promenade > Lakeside sunset. Stay in Spiez. Arrive at Spiez train station by train at noon. The viewing platform outside the station is the first must-visit spot, offering a high-point overlook of the whole town, lake, and Mount Niesen—a classic panoramic photo spot. Walk downhill to the old town and Spiez Castle: Visit the museum, climb the tower for overhead shots of red roofs + lake + snow-capped mountains. The gardens are free to explore. Walk along the flower-lined lakeside promenade to the sailing marina and Lido beach. Stroll on the lakeside lawn and wander through the town streets. Wait for the sunset by the lake in the evening. The sunset over the castle and the light reflecting on the lake is the core Spiez experience. Dinner at a lakeside restaurant featuring lake fish/Rösti. Stay in town. Logic: The first day is purely for walking and slowly exploring the town's highlights without rushing for boats, ensuring the best sunset experience. Day 2: Lake Thun cruise > Explore Thun old town > Return / Return to Spiez for vineyard hiking. Take a morning cruise from the pier to Thun (free with pass, choose the open-air second deck). The view looking back at Spiez Castle from the water is the best. The 1-hour cruise passes vineyards and small castles along the shore. Disembark in Thun, explore the old town, Thun Castle, and the Aare River old streets. Have lunch in Thun. Two return options: Take a 10-minute train back to Spiez. In the afternoon, do the 2-hour gentle vineyard hiking loop on the hill behind the town for overhead lake views from the terraces, and stop by a local winery for a tasting. Continue by train directly from Thun to Bern/Interlaken for your next destination. If you don't want to go to Thun: On Day 2, take a cruise to Interlaken West instead, then return by train. ✅Itinerary B | Advanced light hiking version (Spiez + Mount Niesen pyramid mountain, mountain & lake combo) Suitable for those who love mountain views and want an upgraded landscape experience. Day 1: Same as Itinerary A: Train station viewing platform > Castle > Lakeside promenade > Sunset. Stay in Spiez. Day 2: Spiez > Mülenen > Mount Niesen funicular to the summit, panoramic mountain views. Return/back to the lake in the afternoon. Take a short 5-minute train from Spiez to Mülenen in the morning, then transfer to the Niesen funicular to Niesen Kulm (2,362m, pyramid mountain, overlooking the entire Lake Thun + Bernese Oberland mountains). Rest at the summit restaurant and take short walks for views; the scenery is very expansive. If you don't want to take the funicular the whole way, you can hike in sections. Take the funicular down to Mülenen in the afternoon, train back to Spiez, then continue your trip by cruise/train. Note: Mount Niesen has seasonal operations, check opening times in advance. Not recommended for pure leisure; Itinerary A is better suited for a 2-day trip. ✅Alternative Itinerary C | Low-intensity, pure town relaxation version Day 1: Arrival, train station, castle, relaxing picnic by the lake, sunset. Day 2: Slow walk on the vineyard trail, visit the small church, have coffee at the pier. No boats, stay in town. Return by train in the afternoon. Top choice for families, leisure, and relaxing vacations. ✅Alternative Itinerary D | Connecting with Interlaken Day 1: Train from Interlaken to Spiez, castle + lakeside sunset. Stay in Spiez. Day 2: Cruise back to Interlaken West, explore Interlaken/Lake Brienz. Suitable as a stopover for Jungfrau trips. ⚠️Key tips to avoid pitfalls Spiez Castle is closed on Mondays, so don't plan a visit for Monday morning. The gardens remain accessible. Cruises operate from mid-April to October and stop in winter. Check schedules and last boat times on SBB Mobile in advance (approx. 6:10 PM to Thun, 5:30 PM to Interlaken West). It's windy by the lake, and there's a significant temperature difference between day and night. Bring a windbreaker even in summer. Weather in the lake region changes quickly. Many shops and supermarkets are closed on Sundays, so prepare light meals in advance. There is no food delivery in Switzerland, and costs are relatively high. Many private residences in residential areas prohibit photography. Stick to public paths, the castle, and the lakeside. Don't try to cram a deep tour of both Jungfrau and Spiez into two days; it will be very rushed. Prioritize one as your main itinerary and do the other as a short day trip. The vineyard trail is a gentle, easy hike (2 hours, no difficulty), not mountain climbing. Mount Niesen is the actual mountain climbing route. The walk from the train station to the pier is all downhill, which can be tiring with large luggage. If driving in peak season, parking by the lake is limited; prioritize the station parking garage.

I purchased directly through Trip.com this time and received the QR code immediately after payment; it’s very convenient to use, and I recommend saving it to your phone ahead of time, because ticket inspections can happen at any moment on trains, boats, or at attractions. I personally highly recommend 1st class. Popular routes get crowded very easily, and 1st class makes it much easier to find a seat and avoid the hustle—a huge plus when traveling with luggage. The Swiss Travel Pass covers most trains, buses, and boats directly. Some mountain transport options offer additional discounts, and it also includes free entry to many attractions, such as Thun Castle, Chillon Castle, and the Matterhorn Museum. The biggest advantage is simply how effortless and convenient it is. You don't have to buy tickets for every leg of the journey, giving you much more flexibility if your plans change. ⭐️ Convenience: 5/5 ⭐️ Recommendation for Independent Travel: 5/5 ⭐️ 1st Class: Highly recommended if your budget allows.

Tucked away in the Bernese Oberland, Blumenstein is the kind of Swiss village that feels wonderfully removed from the rush of everyday life. Surrounded by green meadows, rolling hills, forests, and the dramatic silhouettes of the Alps, it offers a peaceful glimpse of rural Switzerland at its most authentic. The landscape around Blumenstein is especially beautiful: traditional farmhouses sit among open fields, while distant mountain peaks create a spectacular natural backdrop. In warmer months, the meadows become a patchwork of fresh green, wildflowers, and grazing cattle, while autumn brings warm golden and amber tones to the forests and hillsides. 🍂🏔️ One of the village's highlights is the Blumenstein Church, whose distinctive historic architecture adds character to the surrounding countryside. Nearby viewpoints and walking paths provide opportunities to slow down and simply enjoy the scenery. Blumenstein is also a wonderful base for discovering the wider Thun region. The beautiful city of Thun, Lake Thun, and the mountains of the Bernese Oberland are all within reach, making the area ideal for travelers who want to combine peaceful village life with classic Swiss landscapes. What makes Blumenstein special is not a single famous attraction, but the atmosphere—the quiet roads, alpine air, traditional countryside, and ever-present mountain views. It is a place where the journey itself becomes part of the experience. 📍 Blumenstein, Canton of Bern, Switzerland 🏔️ Bernese Oberland 🌿 Alpine countryside • Traditional villages • Mountain views 📸 A perfect destination for slow travel and nature lovers Sometimes, the most memorable Swiss moments are found far from the crowds. 🇨🇭✨
