5 Alpine Hotels Where Luxury Meets the Farm and Forest
Forget marble lobbies and gold taps. The new kind of luxury in the Alps smells like pine wood, tastes like cheese made down the road, and comes with a mountain view you’ll never forget. These hotels go back to the land, with organic farms, forest spas and ingredients grown on site, without giving up an ounce of comfort.
If you dream of waking up to cowbells, soaking in a hot pool with snowy peaks outside, and eating dinner that was harvested that morning, these five Alpine retreats are calling.
1. Stanglwirt, Tyrol, Austria
The organic farm that grew a five-star hotel
At the foot of the dramatic Wilder Kaiser mountains, Stanglwirt started life as a humble inn. The Gasthof here has existed since the 17th century, and it’s the historic heart of today’s resort. In the 1980s, Balthasar Hauser built a hotel on his parents’ farmland, and it has since become one of Austria’s most loved eco-luxury stays.
Sustainability isn’t a marketing line here. Much of the food comes from the hotel’s own farm, water flows from its own spring, and a modern bio-energy plant powers the property. Most of the meat and dairy comes from the 100-hectare farm, and the mountain cheese is matured on the hotel’s own alpine pasture.
Then there are the horses. Stanglwirt has Austria’s first private Lipizzaner stud, and you can even take riding lessons on these elegant white horses. Rooms are finished in Swiss stone pine, and the 12,000 square metre wellness world includes rock-carved pools and saunas.
Don’t miss: Dinner in the Kuhstall-Stube, a cosy dining room with a view of the farm’s cows.
Getting there: About 1 hour 15 minutes by car from Salzburg or Innsbruck airports. Kitzbühel is just 15 minutes away.
Best for: Families, horse lovers and anyone who wants ski slopes in winter and hiking in summer.
2. Forestis, South Tyrol, Italy
A forest retreat high in the Dolomites
Perched at around 1,800 metres on the slopes of Plose mountain above Brixen, Forestis is built around a historic sanatorium from the early 1900s. Its sleek wooden towers rise between the trees, and every suite has floor-to-ceiling windows looking straight at the jagged Dolomites.
The whole concept is inspired by the forest. The spa uses treatments based on pine, spruce and larch, and the kitchen cooks with what grows wild in the woods and meadows around it. It’s silent, calm and deeply restorative.
Don’t miss: A forest-bathing walk, then a swim in the heated pool with mountain views.
Getting there: Around 45 minutes from Bolzano, or about 2 hours from Innsbruck.
Best for: Couples, design lovers and anyone needing a total digital detox.
3. San Luis Retreat, South Tyrol, Italy
Treehouses and chalets around a private lake
Hidden on a high plateau above Merano, San Luis feels like stepping into a fairytale. Guests stay in treehouses perched among the pines, or in chalets dotted around a peaceful lake. Mornings start with mist over the water, and evenings end by the fireplace.
Days are slow here: a dip in the lake, a long hike through the forest, a session in the spa, and dinners made with South Tyrolean produce.
Don’t miss: A sauna session followed by a cold plunge in the lake.
Getting there: About 30 minutes by car from Merano.
Best for: Romantic getaways and anyone who loves the idea of sleeping in the trees.
4. Schloss Elmau, Bavaria, Germany
A castle retreat for culture lovers
Tucked in a remote valley near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Schloss Elmau is a grand castle hotel surrounded by meadows and peaks. It has hosted the G7 summit twice, but its real soul is cultural, with its own concert hall, regular classical and jazz performances, and a beautiful bookshop.
Add several spas, outdoor pools facing the mountains, and acres of hiking trails from the door, and you’ll find it hard to leave.
Don’t miss: An evening concert, followed by a nightcap in the library.
Getting there: About 1 hour 15 minutes from Munich, or 20 minutes from Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Best for: Book lovers, music fans and slow travellers.
5. Bürgenstock Resort, Lake Lucerne, Switzerland
Clifftop luxury above a glacial lake
Reaching Bürgenstock is half the fun. Take a boat across Lake Lucerne, then ride a historic funicular up the cliff to a resort perched 500 metres above the water. The views are breathtaking from almost every corner.
The Alpine Spa is the star, with an infinity pool that seems to spill straight into the lake below. Walk the Felsenweg, a cliffside trail with dramatic views, and finish the day with Swiss cheese and wine on the terrace.
Don’t miss: A sunset swim in the infinity pool.
Getting there: Ferry from Lucerne to Kehrsiten-Bürgenstock, then the funicular. The whole journey takes around 30 minutes.
Best for: Big views, spa days and a classic Swiss splurge.
Before You Book
Pick your season. Winter brings skiing and snowy spa views. Summer is all about hiking, lakes and meadows full of wildflowers.
Look for half-board deals. Many Alpine hotels include breakfast and dinner, which can make luxury better value.
Book early for holidays. Christmas, New Year and summer weeks fill up months in advance.
Ask about adults-only areas. Some retreats have quiet zones or are adults-only, so check if you’re travelling with kids.
Rent a car. Most of these hotels are remote, and the drives themselves are part of the magic.
The Alps have always been beautiful, but these hotels make them feel personal. Swap the city spa for a forest sauna, and breakfast buffets for cheese from the farm next door. This is luxury, rooted in nature. 🏔️
