🏮 Xi'an: My First Love in China and 14 Kilometers of History on Foot (or One Day in Ancient Times) ✨
Xi'an was my first city in China. I came here for the first time in 2019, and I love it more and more with each visit. As a naive newcomer, I decided to walk all 14 kilometers of the ancient city wall. It took almost the entire day, but it was my first real challenge in Asia. Years later, I'm back again – this time with a bike and a clear plan for the perfect day. If you only have 24 hours in Xi'an, this route is the perfect way to experience its soul! 🏮
📋 For Planning (Practice)
· Best Time: Morning for the wall, evening for food and the tower. July is a hot month, so plan the active part for early morning.
· Daily Budget: Approximately 200-300 RMB per person (including tickets, bike, and a hearty snack).
· Note: I usually check and book all my tickets in advance on Trip.com—it's more relaxing and gives me a chance to snag a discount or combo offer.
🏞️ What's inside: my itinerary step by step
🧱 Step 1: Walk the City Wall (or bike!)
On my first visit in 2019, I walked the wall. It was epic, but it took almost the entire day! 🚶♀️ The Xi'an Wall is one of the best-preserved in China, stretching almost 14 km. So now I promise myself and you: take a bike! It will save you time and energy.
· 💰 Prices (July 2026): Entrance fee: 54 RMB for adults (students: 27). Bike rental: 45 RMB for 3 hours (plus a 100 RMB deposit).
· 🏯 Four Main Gates: You can start your walk from any of the four historic entrances, which are all original Ming-dynasty gates:
· South Gate (Yongning) – the oldest and most impressive, an ideal starting point.
· East Gate (Changle) – "Eternal Joy."
· West Gate (Anding) – "Peace and Tranquility."
· North Gate (Anyuan) – "Eternal Harmony."
· 🏛️ Hidden Gem – Hanguangmen Museum: A must-see! This is China's first city gate remnant museum, located right inside the wall (west of the South Gate). Here you can see the actual ruins of a Tang-dynasty gate, over 1,400 years old, and even traces of ancient carts. Admission is included in the wall ticket price (54 yuan).
· ⛩️ Guan Ren Temple: Little Tibet by the City Wall: From the wall, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramas of different parts of Xi'an. I especially remember the view of Guan Ren Temple—the only Tibetan Buddhist temple in Shaanxi Province, built in 1705. You can climb down to it directly from the wall, and it's worth it! The red walls with golden roofs, colorful prayer flags, and ringing bells create a wonderfully tranquil atmosphere. Entry is free, and you can get free incense and water on the grounds. This is a working monastery, so please observe silence and respect the traditions.
· 📸 Photography Services: Professional photographers work right on the wall. This is a great option for solo travelers! They know the best angles, help with posing, and take beautiful, atmospheric photos. Prices are usually negotiable, but the results are worth it. • 💡 Tip: Rent a bike at the South Gate (Yongning) and cycle clockwise—there are fewer climbs. The circuit takes about 1.5–2 hours. If you decide to walk, like I did, bring water and comfortable shoes!
🍢 Step 2: Immerse yourself in the Muslim Quarter
After the wall, we descend and head toward the Muslim Quarter. This isn't just a tourist market, but a historical area over 1,300 years old! It smells of spices, grill smoke, and freshly baked goods. 🥙
· 🕌 Mosque and shops: In the heart of the quarter is the ancient Great Mosque, built in traditional Chinese style—an incredible blend of cultures. Surrounding it is a network of colorful shops where you can buy spices, tea, sweets, and souvenirs. • 🍜 What to try: Be sure to try the roujiamo (a local meat hamburger) for 12-15 yuan and the yangzhou paomo (lamb and flatbread soup) for 35-40 yuan.
· 💰 Prices: Street food costs between 10-30 yuan, while a hearty meal will cost around 80-150 yuan per person. I recommend exploring the back alleys (like Xiyang Market), where prices are lower than on the main tourist street.
🥁 Step 3: End the evening at the Drum Tower (with a coffee stop)
Our route ends at the majestic Drum Tower. It's only a 6-7-minute walk from the Muslim Quarter. Along the way, you'll pass a modern shopping mall—a great contrast to the ancient streets! • ☕ My Favorite Coffee: If you need a break, there's my favorite Starbucks here, as well as the popular Chinese chain Luckin Coffee. Perfect for grabbing a cup and enjoying the sunset.
· 💰 Prices (July 2026): A ticket to the Drum Tower costs 30 RMB. If you also want to visit the Bell Tower, it's a better deal to buy a combined ticket for 50 RMB.
· 🥁 Drum Show: Traditional drum performances are held here every day (usually at 10:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 3:00 PM, 4:00 PM, 5:00 PM, and 8:00 PM). It's very atmospheric!
· 🕰️ Hours (July): The tower is open from 8:30 AM to 9:30 PM, so you'll have time for both the show and evening photos.
💡 Lifehacks and tips
· 🚪 Entrances to the Wall: There are 18 gates on the wall, but only 8 are open to tourists: South (Yongning), East (Changle), West (Anding), North (Anyuan), as well as the Heping, Wenchang, Hanguang, and Shangde gates.
· 🏛️ Museum: The Hanguangmen Museum is open from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM, with a recommended visit time of 1–1.5 hours. It's best to visit in the morning or late afternoon when there are fewer people.
· 👟 Shoes: Even if you're taking a bike, be sure to wear comfortable shoes. The surface on the wall is uneven, and the alleys of the Muslim Quarter require a lot of walking.
· 💧 Water: Xi'an is very hot in July. Bring a bottle of water with you; it's more expensive on the wall. • 📸 Photos: The best shots from the wall are taken at sunset. And if you want to book a photo shoot with local photographers, it's best to book in advance.
· 💳 Payment: WeChat Pay and Alipay are accepted almost everywhere in China now. Cash may only be useful in very small shops.
💜 About time and experience
When I arrived in Xi'an in 2019, I was new to Asia. I naively thought that walking 14 kilometers was a great idea. And you know what? It was hard, but it was my first real challenge, which taught me to listen to my body and not be afraid of long distances. Now, years later, I understand: solo travel isn't about trying to do everything. It's about choosing your own pace. In 2019, I walked to feel every stone. In 2026, I recommend cycling to conserve energy for new discoveries. And that's the beauty of the evolution of a traveler. 💜
