Xiahe travel guide and discussion

Always yearning for the vastness of the grasslands and eager to escape the holiday crowds, I made a last-minute decision this National Day. I tossed aside the daily grind and drove straight to Sangke Grassland in Gannan. There was no tedious itinerary—just a spontaneous getaway, surrendering my days to the wind, the sea of clouds, and the infinite meadows. 🌾 🏡 Accommodation | Yunshang Xishe: A Boutique Glamping Sanctuary on Sangke Grassland While there are many stays in Sangke, most are basic local guest houses. If you want a perfect blend of scenery, privacy, and luxury, this was definitely the right choice. Located deep within the Zhanggangcha Pasture, about 20 minutes from Labrang Monastery, it’s far from the noise of the main road. It occupies a massive stretch of pristine grazing land, with wooden cabins scattered far apart to ensure maximum privacy without the feeling of being crowded. We booked the panoramic suite, and the 270° floor-to-ceiling windows were breathtaking. Without even stepping outside, you can face the grasslands, streams, and rolling mountains right from your bed. Waking up to the morning glow over the prairie and the distant sound of cowbells as mist rolls over the slopes—the ambiance is simply unmatched. With its own private viewing terrace, you can spend the afternoon just daydreaming in a chair, watching clouds drift across the wilderness and yaks wander slowly past. Time naturally slows down here. The amenities are top-tier. The biggest concern on the plateau is usually the cold and unstable hot water, but here, the water is consistently hot 24/7. The heating is excellent, the bedding is soft and skin-friendly, and the bathrooms feature a dry-wet separation design. Thoughtful details like welcome fruit, oxygen tanks, and humidifiers really help ease the worries of high-altitude travel. At night, with minimal light pollution, you just need to look up to see a dazzling sea of stars—a magnificent sight rarely found in the city. 🍲 A Taste of the Grassland | Gourmet Experiences The stay includes a traditional Tibetan breakfast: butter tea, Tibetan buns, and freshly baked flatbreads. Eating them hot is the perfect way to chase away the morning chill of the plateau. For dinner, I highly recommend the yak meat hotpot. The local ingredients are fresh, and the broth is rich. You can also enjoy a BBQ on the terrace; accompanied by the evening breeze of the grassland, the vibe is incredible. 🚗 A Relaxed National Day Itinerary for Sangke (Slow-Paced) ▪ Day 1: Arrive and check in. Relax on the terrace, wait for the grassland sunset, and stargaze at night. ▪ Day 2: Wander through Sangke Wetland Park. Walk along the wooden boardwalks to see the autumn-tinged meadows and water birds. If you have time, visit Labrang Monastery to experience Tibetan culture. ▪ Day 3: Take a stroll through the pasture to see the sheep and cattle grazing freely before a leisurely drive back. ⚠ Essential Tips for Sangke during National Day ▫ The altitude is over 3,000m. Avoid strenuous activities like running or jumping. Prepare oxygen tanks and glucose, and let your body adapt slowly to the altitude. ▫ The temperature difference between day and night is massive! It’s sunny during the day but freezing at night. Lightweight down jackets or hardshell jackets are a must. Choose waterproof/anti-slip shoes as the meadows get dewy. ▫ UV rays are intense. Come fully prepared with sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and face masks. ▫ Mobile signals can be weak in parts of the grassland. Download offline maps in advance and carry a small amount of cash. ▫ Respect local customs: do not wander into private grazing lands without permission, do not trample on prayer flags, and always ask before photographing herders. ▫ National Day is peak season, so homestays fill up fast—be sure to book in advance! This spontaneous trip wasn’t about checking off a list of attractions; it was about finding space to breathe. Standing in the vastness of the grassland, you realize many worries are actually quite insignificant. If you want to escape the city noise this National Day, Sangke and Cloud Creek House deserve a spot on your list.

Finally, I’ve found the ideal way to experience Gannan! By avoiding the summer crowds, Sangke Grassland during the Mid-Autumn Festival reaches a whole new level of beauty. The vibrant greens of summer have faded into a soft, shimmering gold, set against a crisp, crystal-clear blue sky. With gentle winds and low clouds, staying in a luxury retreat deep in the heart of the prairie—drifting off to the evening breeze and gazing at the star-studded galaxy—is the ultimate remedy for all fatigue. 🌾 🌿 Mid-Autumn at Sangke Grassland | A Unique Golden Hidden Gem Many people only know Sangke Grassland in the summer, but Mid-Autumn is when it truly shines! The autumn meadows are layered in shimmering gold, offering vast, open horizons without the heavy crowds of the peak season. The deep blue sky is incredibly clear, and the light, lazy clouds make every snapshot a masterpiece that requires no filter. The atmosphere in the evening is unmatched, as the sunset glow spills over the golden grass, creating a scene that is both tender and healing. But the biggest surprise is the night! Far from city light pollution, the sky is breathtakingly clean. Stars blanket the horizon, and the Milky Way is clearly visible. Lying in bed, you can enjoy an immersive view of the celestial display—a serene and romantic experience you simply won't find in the city. 🏡 The Ultimate Stay | Yun Shang Xi She: The Peak of Grassland Luxury The best decision of this trip was booking Yun Shang Xi She! It is a true hidden gem of wild luxury that completely redefines grassland accommodation, offering perfect comfort, privacy, and stunning views. 📍 Location The homestay is tucked away in the heart of the Gangcha Pasture within Sangke Grassland, just a 20-minute drive from Labrang Monastery. Just wrapped up a 3-night stay in the Sangke Grassland, experiencing everything from town-based Tibetan homestays to remote luxury glamping! I've put together an honest, tiered review to help you dodge the tourist traps, find the perfect fit, and literally copy my itinerary for your Gannan trip✅ 🌿First, let's break down the Sangke accommodation scene It's generally split into two main areas: Sangke Town and the deep grassland. The town offers easy access to food, drinks, and gas, but lacks that authentic grassland vibe. Deep in the grassland, the scenery is absolutely stunning, but amenities can be hit or miss. Prices range drastically from 200 to 2,800 RMB, and the experiences are night and day! 💰200-400 RMB | Budget & Rustic (Just for a quick layover) Think local Tibetan guesthouses and herdsmen's tents. The hosts are incredibly genuine, and you get a taste of everyday Tibetan life with butter tea and tsampa. It's super convenient for getting around and grabbing supplies, offering killer value for money. The downsides are glaring, though: mostly shared bathrooms (showering on the grassland is freezing!), terrible soundproofing where you can hear the wind whipping the tent and your neighbors' every move, and stepping out the door straight onto a road with zero grassland views. ✅Best for: Students on a budget, quick layovers, and travelers who just need a place to crash. 🏡500-900 RMB | Mid-Range Comfort (A safe, foolproof choice) This tier covers your standard boutique inns and chain B&Bs. They come with en-suite bathrooms, 24/7 hot water, on-site restaurants, and all the basic hardware you need for a comfortable stay. The catch? Rooms tend to be on the small side with decor that screams "budget motel," totally missing that charming grassland aesthetic. It gets noisy during peak season, privacy is lacking, the service feels a bit cookie-cutter and cold, and it's definitely not Instagram-worthy. ✅Best for: Family trips, budget-conscious travelers, and those who prioritize function over a unique experience. ✨1800-2800 RMB | High-End Glamping (An absolute god-tier choice) I have to officially shout out: Xiahe Sangke Yunshang Xishe B&B—the absolute highlight of my Gannan trip! Compared to Norden Camp and other similarly priced luxury glamping spots, the value and experience here are simply off the charts🔥 📍Hidden Gem Location: Tucked deep inside the Gangcha Pasture, it boasts nearly 100 acres of exclusive private grassland, far from the hustle and bustle. Throw open your window to babbling streams, distant mountains, and seas of clouds—it's pure, peaceful healing. Plus, it's just a 36-minute drive to Labrang Monastery, making it a great base for major sights. 🏠Ultimate Room Types: Standalone scenic wooden cabins offering a massive 55-65㎡ of space. Every unit features a private terrace and courtyard for 10/10 privacy. Floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows let you take in the sunrise, sunset, snow-capped peaks, and meadows right from your bed. Complete with smart home tech, L'Occitane toiletries, climate control heating, premium bedding, and 5-star hotel-level amenities. Oh, and welcome fruit, oxygen canisters, and a free minibar upon check-in! 🍽Culinary Surprises: Totally shatters the stereotype of basic grassland food! Mind-blowingly fresh yak meat hot pot, pre-ordered whole roast sheep that's crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and beautifully crafted fresh Halal breakfasts. There's also an ultra-aesthetic starry sky afternoon tea—just sip, enjoy the breeze, and snap photos that belong in a magazine. 🛎Heartwarming Service: 24/7 butler service that hits every detail—greeting you with a khata scarf upon arrival, carrying your luggage, bringing umbrellas in the rain, and reminding you to bundle up when it gets chilly. The resident Border Collie, "Liuyi," is an absolute sweetheart. The overall service is genuinely warm and personal, nothing like that robotic corporate hospitality. 📸Photogenic 24/7: Morning seas of clouds and flowers, daytime yaks grazing, fiery orange sunsets, and a crystal-clear Milky Way at night. You can also go horseback riding, hiking, spot wild animals, and enjoy the ultimate vibe with bonfires and fireworks.

Return to Hezuo in the afternoon, concluding the healing journey. ✅ Estimated Cost per Person (2 people, 3 days) · Transportation: Round-trip self-driving fuel and tolls from Hezuo, about 130 RMB per person · Accommodation: 2 nights in Tibetan guesthouses, about 230 RMB per person · Tickets: Dazong Sacred Lake + temple, about 60 RMB per person · Meals: Three meals + plateau specialty foods, about 210 RMB per person · Others: Snacks, sunscreen, prayer flag blessing items, about 80 RMB per person · Total: Approximately 710 RMB per person; with 4 people traveling together, cost can drop to about 590 RMB per person ✅ Practical Tips 1. The plateau altitude is high; move slowly to avoid altitude sickness; large temperature differences between day and night, bring a thick jacket even in summer. 2. UV rays are very strong; hats, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are essential; some road sections have weak signals, download offline maps in advance. 3. Respect local beliefs; do not step on prayer flags, do not touch mani stones casually, and avoid loud noises. 4. Must-try foods: butter tea, hand-grabbed lamb, tsampa, Tibetan noodles, barley cakes. 5. Best photo times: early morning mist, sunset, backlit prayer flags. ✅ Must-Visit Photo Spots Panoramic views of Dazong Sacred Lake, lakeside prayer flag clusters, wooden boardwalk around the lake, alpine meadow cattle and sheep, Tibetan village stone houses, distant temple views, snow mountain reflections on the lake surface.

#underratedspots Everyone flocks to the Great Wall and the Bund. But China's true magic? It hides in places most tourists skip. Here are my favorite underrated gems. 💎 1️⃣ Xiapu Mudflats, Fujian Surreal. Dreamlike. Sunrise over coastal mudflats with bamboo poles rising from the mist, fishermen casting giant nets — it's a photographer's heaven. Hardly any foreign tourists make it here. Coastal seafood feasts for pocket change. 📸 2️⃣ Gannan Tibetan Region, Gansu Want Tibet's monasteries, grasslands, and prayer flags without the permit hassle? Gannan delivers. Labrang Monastery's golden roofs, rolling green plains dotted with yaks, and genuine Tibetan culture. Raw, spiritual, unforgettable. 🏔️ 3️⃣ Quanzhou, Fujian Once the starting point of the Maritime Silk Road, now a laid-back coastal city with stone temples, mosques, and churches on the same street. The food here is legendary — try the oyster omelet and peanut soup. UNESCO noticed. Tourists haven't. Yet. 4️⃣ Enshi Grand Canyon, Hubei Zhangjiajie's lesser-known cousin, and honestly? Just as jaw-dropping. Karst pillars piercing through clouds, vertigo-inducing cliffside walkways, and emerald rivers below. Half the crowds, double the awe. 🌫️ 5️⃣ Yili Grasslands, Xinjiang Forget crowded inner Mongolia tours. In summer, Yili explodes into endless lavender fields, snow-capped Tianshan peaks, and Kazakh herders galloping across meadows. It looks like Switzerland but tastes like Central Asia. 🐴 6️⃣ Shaxi Ancient Town, Yunnan Dali and Lijiang are beautiful, but Shaxi — a perfectly preserved tea horse road town — still feels sleepy and real. Stone bridges, cobbled market squares, mule bells echoing at dusk. Stay in a restored courtyard inn and let time slow down. 🏮 7️⃣ Jingdezhen, Jiangxi The porcelain capital of the world for over 1,000 years. Wander through ancient kiln ruins, try throwing clay with master artisans, and visit weekend markets where young ceramic artists sell stunning handmade pieces. Creative energy everywhere. 🏺 ✨ The best trips? They happen when you point at a map, pick a name you can barely pronounce, and just go. China rewards the curious. If you've already visited Lanzhou, tried beef noodles, and walked across Zhongshan Bridge, then this guide is for you. Lanzhou's charm extends far beyond its popular tourist spots. In June, Jincheng (Lanzhou) holds many hidden gems cherished by locals, offering an escape from the hustle of tour groups and a taste of authentic Northwest life. Today, I'll take you to discover a different Lanzhou, allowing you to deeply experience the hidden charm of this Yellow River city. 【Lanshan Park: Lanzhou Locals' Backyard Garden】 Many tourists visit Baita Mountain, but few know that Lanshan Park is truly beloved by Lanzhou locals. In June, Lanshan is lush with greenery, and the temperature is 5℃ cooler than the city, making it a natural summer retreat. I recommend going up the mountain around 4 or 5 PM. First, find a spot in one of Lanshan's tea gardens, order a cup of Gaiwan tea, snack on sunflower seeds, and gaze at Lanzhou city below. This kind of leisurely feeling is something no other scenic spot can offer. Lanzhou's tea garden culture is truly therapeutic. For just a few dozen yuan, you can sit for an entire afternoon, with free sunflower seeds and hot water provided. You can play cards, chat, daydream, or simply do nothing but enjoy the breeze. In the evening, head to Santai Pavilion to watch the sunset and the night view. This is Lanzhou's most beautiful spot for night photography – as the sun sets and the city lights come on, the entire city of Lanzhou glows brightly, and the Yellow River flows through it like a golden ribbon. That breathtaking beauty will be unforgettable. After descending, you can go to Zhengning Road at the foot of the mountain for a late-night snack, or directly enjoy "Big Plate Chicken" (Dapanji) or "Kangkou Lamb" (Kangkou Yangrou) at one of the farmhouses on the mountain. The flavors are authentic, and the prices are reasonable. 【Agan Town: An Industrial Town Forgotten by Time】 Agan Town is just a 40-minute drive from Lanzhou. This industrial town, with a history of over a century, was once Lanzhou's most important coal mining base. Now, its prosperity has faded, but it has left behind precious memories of an era. Walking through the town's streets, with Soviet-style buildings, abandoned factories, and old cinemas on both sides, feels like stepping back into the 1970s or 80s. I especially recommend visiting Shifogou National Forest Park, right next to Agan Town. This is a pristine secondary forest with over 90% forest coverage. In June, Shifogou is covered in blooming wildflowers, and the air is fresh, making it a natural oxygen bar. You can hike in the forest or picnic by the stream. This secluded tranquility is truly therapeutic. For lunch, try a bowl of Lamb Paomo in Agan Town. This local specialty is different from Xi'an's Paomo; Lanzhou's version is boiled, resulting in a richer broth and more tender meat, which is very delicious. There are also many shops in town selling handmade potato vermicelli, which are chewy and great to buy a few pounds to take home. 【Liujiaxia Reservoir: The Blue Pearl on the Plateau】 Many people don't know that a "Plateau Maldives" – Liujiaxia Reservoir – is hidden near Lanzhou. It's a 2-hour drive from Lanzhou. The water here is Tiffany blue and crystal clear, forming a stark contrast with the yellow Yellow River. You can take a boat tour of the reservoir and witness the spectacular "Two Dragons Playing with a Pearl" phenomenon where the Yellow River and Tao River converge, with the yellow river water and blue lake water distinctly separated, which is truly amazing. I highly recommend visiting Bingling Temple Grottoes, one of China's four major grottoes, with a history of over 1600 years, predating the Mogao Grottoes. The Buddha statues and murals in the grottoes are exquisite, especially the 27-meter-tall Great Buddha in Cave 171, which is incredibly impressive. Due to its inconvenient location, there are very few tourists here, allowing you to quietly appreciate these artistic treasures without the crowds found at Mogao Grottoes. For lunch, enjoy reservoir fish at Liujiaxia. They are freshly caught, with tender meat, delicious whether braised or stewed. Also, order a local bowl of Jiangshui Mian (sour soup noodles), which is spicy, sour, and refreshing – perfect for summer. 【Bafang Shisanxiang: Hui Ethnic Charm in Linxia】 Linxia is a 1.5-hour drive from Lanzhou, known as "China's Little Mecca," with a rich Hui ethnic flavor. Bafang Shisanxiang (Eight Blocks, Thirteen Alleys) is Linxia's most representative attraction. The residences here are typical Hui architecture, with exquisite brick carvings and intricate alleys, making you feel like you've stepped into the world of "One Thousand and One Nights." You can stroll leisurely through the alleys, watch elderly Hui people pray, listen to the joyful laughter of children, and experience the most authentic Hui life. I especially recommend visiting Dong Gongguan (East Mansion), a century-old mansion whose brick carving art is unparalleled. Each brick carving is lifelike and is a national intangible cultural heritage. For lunch in Linxia, try Hand-Grabbed Lamb. The lamb here is even more delicious than Lanzhou's, tender and without any gamey smell, paired with Gaiwan tea, it's absolutely superb. Also, try Fazimianchang (noodle sausage), Niangpizi (cold noodles), and Tianpeizi (sweet fermented oats); every dish is delicious and won't disappoint. You must also try Linxia's Eight Treasure Tea, which contains goji berries, red dates, longans, sesame seeds, and raisins, making it sweet, fragrant, and increasingly delightful with every sip. 【Lanzhou Locals' Late-Night Canteen】 Lanzhou's nightlife truly begins after dark. Don't just go to Zhengning Road; locals prefer Nanguan Ethnic Flavor Street. Any lamb skewer shop here is delicious. I recommend grilled lamb kidney, grilled lamb tendon, and grilled lamb tripe, all freshly cut and grilled, with tender meat and an enticing aroma of cumin and chili. I especially recommend the Fangha Tianpeizi Milk Tea here. This is a unique Lanzhou milk tea that combines Tianpeizi (sweet fermented oats) with milk tea, offering a unique taste that is both delicious and refreshing. Also, try Jiangshui Louyu, made from corn flour, shaped like small fish, soaked in sour soup, it's sour, spicy, and refreshing – a must-have summer delicacy. You can also visit Nongmin Alley, Lanzhou's food street, offering a wide variety of cuisines, from Northwest dishes to Sichuan cuisine, from hot pot to barbecue, you'll find everything. I recommend Pang Mama Hand-Grabbed Lamb, a long-standing Lanzhou brand, whose Hand-Grabbed Lamb, Braised Lamb, and Big Plate Chicken are all very authentic. Lanzhou in June is a city full of surprises. It's not a city that immediately wows you, but if you slow down and delve into its streets and alleys, you'll discover its charm hidden in every bowl of beef noodles, in every cup of Gaiwan tea, and in the smiles of every Lanzhou local. Come to Lanzhou, slow down, and experience the most authentic vibrancy and poetry of this golden city. --- Accommodation 🏨 Gansu Jinghu Wild Luxury Lake View Villa with Terrace 180° panoramic lake view independent villa with terrace, cabin-style tent design, and a lakeside restaurant. Dear friends! Just returned from Xiahe, and it feels like my soul has been purified✨ June in Gannan is truly beautiful. The Sangke Grassland is as green as a carpet, the prayer wheels at Labrang Monastery never stop turning, monks in red robes walk past you, and the air is filled with the aroma of butter tea... This is not Tibet, this is Xiahe in Gansu, a Tibetan paradise forgotten by the world! 🌟 Best Time to Visit: Several Reasons to Come to Xiahe in June June is definitely the golden season in Gannan! Temperatures range from 10-20℃, the most comfortable time of the year. The grasslands have just turned green, wildflowers bloom everywhere, and most importantly — it’s not yet the rainy season! July and August often bring rain to Gannan, making roads difficult and affecting photography. June is almost always sunny, with blue skies, white clouds, red walls, and golden roofs — a 100% photo success rate! Plus, there are few tourists, allowing you to quietly feel the power of faith. 📸 Must-Visit Cultural Attractions (A Lifetime Must-See) 1. Labrang Monastery One of the largest Tibetan Buddhist academies in the world, home to the longest prayer wheel path! The 3.5 km prayer wheel path has over 2,000 prayer wheels. Follow the devout Tibetan locals as they spin the wheels, listening to their sound, and you’ll feel completely calm. Be sure to visit the Sun Buddha Platform to overlook the entire Labrang Monastery; the golden roofs sparkle in the sunlight — truly breathtaking! It’s best to come in the morning to see the monks debating. 2. Sangke Grassland The Sangke Grassland in June is stunning! Endless green grasslands dotted with herds of cattle and sheep, black tents scattered like stars, and snow-capped mountains visible in the distance. You can ride horses across the grassland or sit on the grass and daydream, watching the clouds roll by. We recommend visiting Sangke Wetland Park, where wooden boardwalks lead deep into the grassland — perfect for beautiful photos. 3. Guomang Wetland The most beautiful wetland in Gannan, bar none! In June, it’s a sea of flowers, with yellow blossoms covering the entire wetland. Black yaks graze leisurely on the grass, and a winding river runs through like a silver ribbon. From the viewing platform, you can take in the entire wetland — the vastness is indescribable. 4. Bajiao City An ancient city over 2,000 years old, with uniquely octagonal city walls. Indigenous people still live inside, leading a primitive lifestyle. Climb the city walls to overlook the entire ancient city and see the complete octagonal shape — very impressive. Outside the city are grasslands blooming with wildflowers in June. The combination of the ancient city and grasslands is truly magical. 📸 Photography Tips (How to Capture Cultural Masterpieces) Outfit suggestions: Solid colors! Solid colors! Solid colors! Important enough to say three times! White, beige, or khaki long dresses or wide-leg pants contrast beautifully with the red walls and golden roofs, creating a high-end feel. Avoid flashy clothes that disrupt the purity of the scene. Bring a red shawl for warmth and as a prop. Best shooting times: 7-9 AM and 6-8 PM, when the light is soft and the golden roofs of Labrang Monastery glow. Cultural photo spots: 1. Labrang Monastery prayer wheel path, capturing elderly locals spinning wheels 2. Sun Buddha Platform overlooking the full view of Labrang Monastery 3. On the road through Sangke Grassland, shooting wide road shots 4. On the city walls of Bajiao City, capturing panoramic views of the ancient city 🍜 Food Recommendations (Top Tibetan Cuisine) 1. Tibetan Baozi (steamed buns) Xiahe’s Tibetan baozi are incredibly delicious! Thin skin, generous filling of yak meat, bursting with juice in every bite. We recommend "Zhuoma Tibetan Restaurant," where the baozi are freshly made and steamed on the spot. 2. Hand-Pulled Yak Meat Gannan’s yak meat is amazing! Boiled in clear water and dipped in salt, it’s fragrant, tender, and chewy. Be sure to try the bone-in pieces — especially flavorful to gnaw on. 3. Tsampa Porridge A must-have breakfast! Made with tsampa, butter, and milk tea, this warm porridge is very soothing and nourishing. 4. Jue Ma Rice A Gannan specialty! Rice steamed together with Jue Ma (a local plant), sweet and fragrant, especially delicious with butter. 💡 Practical Tips (Cultural Travel Pitfall Guide) 1. Transportation: Xiahe has an airport but limited flights. It’s recommended to take a bus from Lanzhou, about 4 hours with good road conditions. The county is small; taxis start at 5 yuan. 2. Clothing: June has large temperature differences between day and night. Wear long sleeves during the day and a thick jacket at night! UV rays are strong, so be sure to use sun protection. 3. Pitfall 1: When entering monasteries, remove hats, avoid shorts and skirts, don’t speak loudly, and don’t take frontal photos of monks. 4. Pitfall 2: Always spin prayer wheels clockwise, never counterclockwise — it’s a sign of respect for the faith. 5. Pitfall 3: Don’t buy Dzi beads or amber at scenic area entrances — they’re fake. For souvenirs, go to official stores in the county. --- Accommodation 🏨 Xiahe Nuordan Camp National Geographic certified one of the world’s top ten wild campsites, open only from May to October, located deep in Sangke Grassland, offering an ultimate wild luxury experience. 🏨 Xiahe Cloud Wild Luxury Camp Located in the heart of Sangke Grassland, featuring triangular wooden cabins, oxygen supply facilities, and bonfire parties. Zhagana is known by few, and those who have been there all say it is seriously underrated. I drove here from Lanzhou, taking the highway to the national road, then the provincial road, then the township road, and finally a mountain road without guardrails. Outside the car window were cliffs, and under the wheels were loose stones. The GPS completely failed, and I only found my way here with the help of locals. But the moment I stood on the mid-mountain viewing platform and looked down—I felt it was worth it for a lifetime. Zhagana is a Tibetan village hidden deep in the mountains of Diebu County, Gannan. Surrounded on all sides by rocky mountains, it wraps the small village tightly like a natural barrier. A few hundred Tibetan households live here, with stone slab roads, adobe walls, and rooftops covered with prayer flags—exactly as I imagined a Tibetan area should look, but even quieter and more pristine than I expected. I stayed at a Tibetan guesthouse at the village entrance. The owner was a middle-aged man with a dark face, not very talkative but sincerely kind. On the first evening, he told me, “You must get up early tomorrow to watch the sunrise. It will be the most beautiful morning you’ve ever seen.” I was skeptical but got up at 5 a.m. the next day and climbed to the viewing platform. It was pitch dark, and I was the only one there, wrapped in a military coat, squatting on the rocks. Then the sun rose. The sea of clouds first rose from the valley floor like a pot of boiling water, bubbling and spilling out. Then golden light smashed down from the eastern ridge, dyeing the entire sea of clouds orange-red. The prayer flags fluttered in the morning breeze, smoke began to rise from the rooftops, and standing there watching the world gradually light up felt like being cleansed inside and out by something. During the day, I wandered around the village. The Tibetans were used to outsiders like me and went about their business. An old Tibetan grandmother sat at her door soaking up the sun. I gestured and chatted with her for a long time. She was over eighty and had never left this mountain, but when she talked about the outside world, her eyes shone with light. Behind the village was a high mountain meadow full of wildflowers, where yaks and horses grazed leisurely, completely ignoring passing tourists. Zhagana’s altitude is not high, just over 2,800 meters, slightly lower than Labrang Monastery, so altitude sickness is rare. But the feeling here is unlike any other Tibetan area—no entrance fees, no forced spending, no cookie-cutter souvenir shops. There is only a village, a mountain, and a sea. When I left, I looked back at the stone mountain. It stood there just the same, neither sad nor happy. I suddenly remembered a saying: The real scenery is the place you didn’t know existed but feel indebted to after visiting. Zhagana is exactly that. 🚗 Transportation: Rent a car from Lanzhou or Xiahe Airport, or take a bus from Lanzhou to Diebu and then charter a car; about 4-5 hours on mountain roads 🎫 Tickets: Currently free (under development), recommended to go early to enjoy the free access ⏰ Time: Recommended to stay one night; sunrise in the early morning is a must-see; in the afternoon, you can hike the meadow loop for 3-4 hours 👗 Note: Large temperature difference between morning and evening, bring a thick jacket; mountain roads are winding, novice drivers should be cautious 🏨 Accommodation: Tibetan guesthouses 100-200 RMB/night, basic but authentic 🍜 Food: Home-style Tibetan dishes, tsampa, butter tea, yak meat; simple but hearty menu

The decision to go to Gannan was very sudden. Last month, I was so stressed from overtime work, still revising plans past 10 p.m. on a Friday night, when I suddenly saw photos of Zhagana posted on social media—grayish-white stone mountains, green meadows, mist swirling around, like scenes from a movie. I stared at them for a long time, then opened my phone to search for flights. Flying from Lanzhou and then driving, the whole trip would take about seven to eight hours. Since I still had a few days of annual leave left, I just took the time off. I set off early Saturday morning. On the highway from Lanzhou to Hezuo, the scenery began to change; the city’s tall buildings gradually gave way to rolling hills and grasslands. After reaching Xiahe, the road became winding, the altitude kept rising, and my ears started to feel a bit stuffy. By the time I arrived at Zhagana, it was already past 4 p.m. The car turned a corner, and suddenly the view opened up—two huge stone mountains stood like city walls, enclosing a valley in between. In the valley were green barley fields and scattered Tibetan-style houses, smoke rising from the rooftops and being blown away by the wind in midair. I was stunned. It’s hard to describe the feeling—like the scenes you see in travel documentaries suddenly appearing right before your eyes. Not on a computer screen, but real. I stayed at a guesthouse in the village run by a local Tibetan man. There was a small balcony on the second floor facing the stone mountains. After putting down my luggage, I sat on the balcony in a daze, watching clouds drift over the mountain peaks and the light gradually dim. It was very cold at night; even in May, Gannan’s nights are just a few degrees Celsius. The host made me a pot of salty butter tea. The first sip was a bit strange, but after a few sips, it felt very warming. We chatted in the living room. His Chinese wasn’t very good, and I don’t speak Tibetan, but we talked bit by bit and surprisingly enjoyed it. He asked where I was from. I said Beijing. He said Beijing was far and asked why I traveled so far. I said to see the mountains. He said, “What’s so great about mountains? I see them every day and get tired of them.” Then he laughed to himself. Early the next morning, I went hiking toward Fairy Beach. The path wasn’t difficult, just the high altitude made me short of breath after a few steps. But the scenery was amazing—wildflowers of yellow, purple, and white covered the ground, layered mountain peaks in the distance, and clouds so low it felt like you could reach out and touch them. After about an hour, I reached Fairy Beach, where the grassland opened up even more and a few horses grazed leisurely. I sat on a rock, and besides the sound of the wind and birds, there was complete silence. This kind of quietness isn’t like the silence of a city at night; it’s a silence that flows from the earth and sky, making your mind empty, just wanting to sit still. I sat there for about half an hour, then continued upward. The path became narrower with no clear signs, so I followed the small trail made by previous hikers. Halfway up, I looked back and saw the entire Tibetan village of Zhagana below—stone houses, barley fields, winding rivers—all so small they looked like models. At that moment, I suddenly felt how truly small humans are. After spending the whole day in the mountains, I returned to the village as it was getting dark. The host’s dinner was simple—tsampa and a pot of yak meat stewed with potatoes—but it tasted especially good. Maybe because I was hungry after a day of walking, or maybe because the appetite is naturally better on the plateau. On the third day, I visited Lasang Monastery, located on a hillside next to the village. The monastery was small, with red and white buildings and rows of golden prayer wheels. When I arrived, a few Tibetan women were turning the prayer wheels, shaking them in their hands and chanting prayers I couldn’t understand, walking in circles. I watched for a while and felt like they had been walking for a long time, but they were in no hurry. That slow pace of life is something you can’t experience in the city. The monks in the monastery were very young, probably in their early twenties, and spoke fluent Chinese. I asked what they usually do in the monastery. He said chanting, studying, and occasionally helping out in the village. I asked if he wanted to go out and see the world. He said he had been out but still preferred it here. I asked why. He thought for a moment and said, “Because it’s quiet here.” I was silent for a long time and didn’t ask further. On the way back, I kept thinking about that sentence: quiet. Every day we chase efficiency, speed, and more things, but what truly makes you feel good is often that quietness where you don’t have to do anything. The mountains and waters of Zhagana won’t become more beautiful because you came, nor uglier because you left. They have been there for thousands of years. When you look at them, they don’t give you surprises, but a confirmation—that such places still exist in this world, and that deep down you always know what’s important, just usually covered by too many things. Travel the world, see your true self. It’s not about how beautiful the scenery is, but that after spending time between heaven and earth, you can see your true nature. Zhagana, Gannan, Diebu County, Gansu ⏰ Recommended visit duration: 2-3 days 💰 No entrance fee, guesthouses about 100-200 RMB/night 💡 Tips: 1. Best season is May to October; visiting during the May Day holiday is perfect—flowers bloom but there aren’t many people 2. Altitude about 3000 meters; watch for altitude sickness, rest first and avoid strenuous exercise upon arrival 3. Hiking routes: Fairy Beach (easy, 2-hour round trip) → Stone Forest (moderate, requires a full day) 4. Bring warm clothes; big temperature difference between day and night, nights can be near freezing 5. About 6-7 hours driving from Lanzhou, or fly to Xiahe and then charter a car 6. Respect local Tibetan customs; no photography inside monasteries; turn prayer wheels clockwise

Labrang Monastery — a baptism of faith in the world’s Tibetan studies academy 📿 Even before entering the monastery, I was amazed by the nearly 3.5-kilometer-long prayer wheel corridor. The copper prayer wheels sway gently under the sunlight, and the deep, resonant chanting of "Om Mani Padme Hum" fills the air. Walking clockwise with the Tibetans around the corridor is a meditation and healing for oneself! The Butter Lamp Academy is filled with the fragrance of butter flowers, and I happened upon little monks in red robes playfully chasing each other in the debate courtyard, creating a rich cultural atmosphere. Tickets cost 40 yuan, and the opening hours in summer are 08:00-18:00. It’s recommended to arrive early to the Buddha platform, where the sunlight casts a honey-colored glow on the red walls and golden roofs — truly an epic photo spot! For outfits, bright shawls or linen wide-leg pants in Tibetan red make for stunning photos. Also, try to slow down as much as possible because every turn of the prayer wheel corridor shakes out a religious soul that made me feel like I was drifting between dream and wakefulness. Zhagana — a fairyland residence fallen to earth ✨ Zhagana, rated by National Geographic as a "must-visit in a lifetime," opens its door straight to the secret stone city 🏞️. The main activity is an early morning hike on the wooden plank trail to experience the morning mist. The viewing platform’s sea of clouds hides in the cliffs, making you feel like you might be about to ride the clouds at any moment! Around 15:30-16:00 in the afternoon, it’s recommended to go to Fairy Beach wearing a bright red or white long dress to ride horses and take photos while overlooking the panoramic view of the four Tibetan villages. The altitude is about 2900-3300 meters, so there’s no severe altitude sickness. Tickets cost 80 yuan and are valid for two days. Be sure to find a good viewing platform in advance for the evening. On clear days, the evening light piercing through the stone mountains creates a huge Tyndall effect, and all you see is a golden dream! Temperatures in Zhagana can drop to around 5-10°C in the early morning and evening, so a windbreaker and a light down jacket are essential! May and June are the best viewing seasons exclusive to Gannan. The grasslands are lush green with wildflowers blooming, the snow mountains remain largely intact, and it avoids the summer crowds! The healing and devotion that Gannan offers are absolutely irreplaceable by any other destination 📷. Zhagana · Diebu
