Today, I went from Uwajima to Yusuhara, a distance of about 60km. Yusuhara is a castle in Kochi Prefecture, and is the area with the highest concentration of buildings designed by the great master of Japanese architecture, Kengo Kuma. The historic Yusuharaza theater, Yusuhara Town Library (Library Above the Clouds), Yusuhara Town General Office, Yusuhara Town Station, Gallery Above the Clouds... The most unfortunate thing about it is that there are no public holidays, and the interior of Yusuhara Library is carefully designed and enjoys a tranquil atmosphere.

Yusuhara Town is located on the border with Ehime Prefecture. The town is called the "town above the clouds" because it is home to the Shikoku Karst, a high plateau at an altitude of 1,455m, and 91% of the town's area is covered by forest. It is also known for having many buildings by world-famous architect Kengo Kuma. The Library Above the Clouds that we visited this time is a public library that opened in 2018. There is a space where local people can chat, and a library space at the back of the cafe. We explored the building, captivated by the ceiling that combines wood, as seen in Kengo Kuma's architecture. The building, which makes abundant use of wood from Yusuhara, had a relaxing and soft atmosphere. The "Yusuhara Stage" in the center of the library This stage, which can also be used as an event space, allows you to sit on the steps and read a book. In addition, the steps are designed to store books, and children's books were stored there. If I were a child, I might have crouched down and looked for a book as if I was on an adventure, then sat down and read it. It is a place visited by locals, remote workers, and tourists. Yusuhara Town in Kochi Prefecture is filled with Kengo Kuma architecture. Next to the Unno-no-Gallery (Wooden Bridge Museum) is the Unno-no-Cafe. The gallery is said to be the only building in the world with such a unique structural form. The exterior is incredibly stylish! It harmonizes with the surrounding nature while also expressing a powerful presence as the 'symbol of Yusuhara.' The cafe is on the second floor of the Kitsutsuki Learning Center in Taro River Park. There's also a campsite. It's right next to the gallery, but the way to get there is super confusing! Ignore the parking lot for campers and drive right up to the front of the shop! For lunch, they offer butter chicken curry or hot sandwiches. The curry was absolutely delicious! I was also happy that the first salad served was a kale salad.
