Botanical Garden Hamma

Botanical Garden Hamma

5.0/5
23 reviews
Botanical Garden Hamma is located in the city center of Algiers. It was established after the French drained the marshes in the Hamma area and was initially used to introduce and acclimatize plants from various continents. Today, it is home to thousands of plant species, with towering trees providing shade. A quiet retreat in the bustling city, it serves as the urban green lung where the people of Algiers go for daily walks and relaxation. The highlights here are concentrated in two distinct areas: the French-style garden on the west side descends in terraces, with a Washingtonia palm avenue running through it; from the high ground, you can enjoy distant views of the Bay of Algiers. The English-style garden on the east side features winding paths and dense shade, where dragon blood trees, giant bamboo, and banyan trees create an atmosphere almost like a tropical rainforest, and the wooden bridge over the lake offers a picturesque scene. The themed tree-lined avenues, such as the Dragon Blood Tree Avenue, Banyan Avenue, and Bamboo Avenue, are all living specimens left over from the plant acclimatization experiments of the past and are worth exploring at a leisurely pace. There is also a zoo on the north side, with an Art Deco-style gate that has a sense of history. Flamingos, Bengal tigers, and various parrots are the permanent residents here, making it a great place to visit with children. The "Tarzan tree," famous because the 1932 film "Tarzan the Ape Man" was filmed here, still stands in the park.Algiers · 1.6 km from downtown

Port of Algiers

Port of Algiers is located within the Bay of Algiers, stretching along the city center, and is one of Algeria's main gateways to the Mediterranean. This bay had the prototype of a port as early as the Phoenician trading post period. In the 16th century, "Redbeard" Hayreddin Barbarossa integrated the fortress built by the Spanish in the sea with the coast. For hundreds of years, it has been a hub for maritime traffic between Northern Africa and Europe, and to this day, it continues to operate regular passenger ferry routes to and from places like Marseille, France, and Alicante, Spain, and is also the first stop for many tourists entering Algeria. As passenger ships sail into the bay, vast stretches of white buildings spread out layer by layer along the hillside, with the Casbah overlooking the pier from above, making the title of Algiers as the "White City" take on real meaning at this moment. You can also take a walk along the surrounding waterfront to view the scene, watching fishing boats, ferries, and cranes all in one frame. In the cafes and restaurants of the surrounding blocks, you can also taste authentic Algerian home-cooked flavors like couscous and tagine.Algiers · 1.4 km from downtown

Martyrs Memorial is a commemorative structure built in Algiers to honor the martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the War of Independence, and it is situated on the site of a former military fortress. The structure is formed by three massive reinforced concrete palm leaves that converge in the center, rising to form a nearly 100 m high curved tower that guards the eternal flame on the platform below. At the base of each of the three palm leaves stands a statue of a soldier, each representing a different stage of the struggle for independence; the tower supported by the palm leaves features an Islamic-style dome silhouette. Standing on the city's high ground, you can take in the views of the Botanical Garden Hamma and the Bay of Algiers from here. Below the base is an exhibition hall themed around the War of Independence. When the lights come on at night, its silhouette can be seen from afar across the Bay of Algiers.Algiers · 1.3 km from downtown

A place worth spending time in. In addition to the seaside promenade, the museums, characteristic blocks and cafes along the way are all worth experiencing. If you stay, I recommend el aurassi, where you can enjoy the harbor view, the three-leaf tower and the Grand Mosque while sitting on the balcony.
