The Egyptian Museum in Cairo

The Egyptian Museum is the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East, and houses the largest collection of Pharaonic antiquities in the world. The museum displays an extensive collection spanning from the Predynastic Period to the Greco-Roman Era. The architect of the building was selected through an international competition in 1895, which was the first of its kind, and was won by the French architect, Marcel Dourgnon. The museum was inaugurated in 1902 by Khedive Abbas Helmy II, and has become a historic landmark in downtown Cairo, and home to some of the world's most magnificent ancient masterpieces. Among the museum's unrivaled collection are the complete burials of Yuya and Thuya, Psusennes I and the treasures of Tanis, and the Narmer Palette commemorating the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under one king, which is also among the museum's invaluable artifacts. The museum also houses the splendid statues of the great kings Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, the builders of the pyramids at the Giza plateau. An extensive collection of papyri, sarcophagi and jewelry, among other objects, completes this uniquely expansive museum.Cairo · 31.7 km from Al Khor

Giza Necropolis

The Giza Necropolis is not a single pyramid, but a collective term for a group of pyramids standing on the Giza Plateau, mostly built during the Fourth Dynasty of ancient Egypt around 2600 to 2500 BCE. The three great pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure are aligned from northeast to southwest, interspersed with queen pyramids and funerary structures, while the Great Sphinx lies to the east. Among the seven wonders of the ancient world, this necropolis is the only one that remains today. As for the alignment of the three pyramids, some speculate it corresponds to the three stars of Orion's Belt—though merely a conjecture, it adds a layer of imagination to the stone giants amidst the yellow sands. Upon entering the attraction, the first sight that greets travelers is usually the Pyramid of Khufu, whose massive scale far surpasses the other two. The remaining height of the pyramid is approx. 140 m. Today, travelers enter the pyramid through a passage on one side of its base, ascending along a dimly lit, low corridor to reach the pharaoh's granite burial chamber. Photography is prohibited inside the pyramid, and the narrow, stuffy passage poses a significant physical challenge. Nearby, the Pyramid of Khafre appears remarkably intact from a distance due to the preserved section of ancient limestone casing at its apex. Inside, the burial chamber is long empty, with only a vacant sarcophagus lying silently within. The smallest of the three, the Pyramid of Menkaure, features a low entrance—just a few stone steps lead into a downward-sloping passage. During your visit, consider heading to the panoramic attraction on the south side of the pyramid complex to capture all three pyramids in a single frame. The long-standing camel ride experience here is also worth trying—gazing back at the pyramids from the desert offers a quintessential view of this ancient plateau.Giza · 33.5 km from Al Khor

The Grand Egyptian Museum is located on the Giza Plateau, approximately two km from the pyramid complex. After over two decades of preparation and construction, it officially opened fully in November 2025. Designed by Heneghan Peng Architects, the museum's layout features several visual axes echoing the three pyramids. Its semi-translucent alabaster facade, adorned with triangular patterns, glows with warm desert-like tones under daylight and illuminates at night, resembling a massive stone carved from the sea of sand—earning it the nickname "the fourth pyramid of Egypt." The museum houses over 100,000 artifacts spanning from the Predynastic Period to the Greco-Roman era. Upon entering the grand hall, travelers are greeted by the towering granite statue of Ramses II, dating back over 3,000 years. In the entrance courtyard, an obelisk is suspended mid-air, allowing passage beneath. Flanking the six-tiered central staircase are dozens of statues of pharaohs and queens, leading upward to a glass wall framing the distant pyramids—a classic photo spot. The Tutankhamun gallery is the highlight, showcasing over 5,000 burial treasures, with the golden mask displayed centrally. The restored Khufu Solar Boat also resides here. A dedicated children's museum offers an engaging introduction to ancient Egyptian civilization. Given the vast scale and dense attractions, allocate at least half a day: start with the staircase's pyramid vista, then explore the Tutankhamun gallery and solar boat exhibit. At dusk, the alabaster facade shimmers under sunset hues—a photo moment many travelers plan for.Giza · 31.4 km from Al Khor

The Great Pyramid of Giza, built as the tomb of Pharaoh Khufu during the Fourth Dynasty of ancient Egypt, is one of the larger and taller Egyptian pyramids. This pyramid was constructed approx. 2580 BCE. It is not only a symbol of Egypt but also the oldest structure among the seven wonders of the ancient world. Pyramids exterior To visit here, you must first enter the Giza pyramid complex. Upon entering, the first sight is this pyramid, which remains one of the best-preserved to date.Sponsored Ads, although the top has weathered over time, it remains a massive structure equivalent to a 40-story building. From a distance,Sponsored AdsEach side forms an isosceles triangle, and the entire pyramid is constructed with 2.3 million massive stone blocks. Pyramids interior Of course, besides admiring its massive exterior, travelers can also explore the interior. Although ventilation has been installed inside the pyramid, the narrow burial passages remain quite stuffy, so those in poor health are advised to proceed with caution. Sponsored AdsThe tomb entrance is at a height of 18 m above the ground, facing the Big Dipper. Photography is prohibited inside, and the passageway is illuminated by lights. After entering, stepping on the steep wooden stairs, you can imagine ancient Egyptians carrying the pharaoh's sarcophagus upward along the passageway to place it inSponsored Adsin the secret chamber. Walking step by step along the corridor inside the pyramid, your footsteps grow heavier, and the air feels increasingly stifling, until you reach the pharaoh's secret chamber. The chamber is a small room built of granite, standing 42.28 m vertically above the ground. For many years, people believed the pyramid concealed the pharaoh's treasures and mummy. But when archaeologists entered in 1881, they found only an empty sarcophagus in the central burial chamber. In the pharaoh's chamber, an open dark red granite sarcophagus can be seen placed in the center. The pharaoh's treasures were long ago looted, leaving only this empty coffin that was too heavy to move. After the exploration, walk slowly back along the original path. Emerging from the dark, enclosed passageway and returning to the open, bright desert landscape, the stark contrast in light and space creates a wondrous feeling of having lived through another lifetime, allowing you to truly grasp the awe and vicissitudes of this thousand-year-old stone miracle.Giza · 33.4 km from Al Khor

Khan el-Khalili is a famous open-air market in Cairo, dating back to the Mamluk era in the 14th century. It was built by the then-emir Djaharkas el-Khalili on the site of a Fatimid royal tomb, from which the market takes its name. Located in the heart of Islamic Cairo, it remains a popular shopping area for both locals and tourists from around the world. As you walk through the market, the narrow alleys are lined with shops selling gold and silver jewelry, copperware, spices, perfumes, and souvenirs. The market preserves stone gates left from the reconstruction by Sultan al-Ghuri in the early 16th century. The intricate Mamluk-style stone carvings on the gates are a direct testament to the market's historical heritage. Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz once used an alley in the market as the setting for his novel, adding a layer of literary depth to the place. Vendors enthusiastically solicit customers, and the sounds of trading fill the air. Even if you don't plan on shopping, wandering between the historic buildings and small shops, soaking in the aroma of spices and the buzz of voices, is a unique experience in itself.Cairo · 33.7 km from Al Khor

Hanging Church

Hanging Church is a prominent Coptic Orthodox church in Coptic Cairo. It is believed to have been founded in the 3rd century and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The church is built on the site of the south gate of the ancient Roman Babylon Fortress, with its nave suspended above the fortress passageway, hence the name "Hanging." Ascending the steps from the street, passing through the pointed stone arch and iron gate, you will see the 19th-century twin-tower facade, with courtyard walls adorned with biblical motifs. The interior of the church has a rectangular basilica layout, with a wooden vaulted roof shaped like Noah's Ark. The sanctuary is divided into three parts, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, John the Baptist, and Saint George, respectively. The wooden iconostasis in front of the altar is inlaid with ebony and ivory, decorated with geometric patterns and cross motifs, and topped with a series of icons depicting Jesus, the Virgin Mary, angels, and the apostles. The marble pulpit is supported by several slender columns, which symbolize Jesus and the twelve apostles; one black basalt column represents Judas, who betrayed Jesus, a design feature that is quite unique among Coptic churches. The sanctuary features a glass floor, through which you can look down at the ruins of the Roman fortress beneath your feet, intuitively experiencing the unique nature of the church's suspended construction. Starting from the 11th century, the church served as the long-term residence of the Coptic Pope, holding an important place in the history of the Coptic Church.Cairo · 35.2 km from Al Khor

Great Sphinx of Giza

Great Sphinx of Giza is an iconic stone sculpture in the Giza Necropolis, located to the east of the Pyramid of Khafre, and carved in situ from a single block of natural limestone. The entire statue is approx. 70 m long and approx. 20 m high, featuring the body of a lion and the face of a human. It is believed to have been built during the reign of the ancient Egyptian Pharaoh Khafre, dating back approx. 4,500 years. The statue originally wore a striped headdress, was adorned with a uraeus on the forehead, and featured a ceremonial pharaonic beard on the chin. However, after thousands of years of wind erosion and burial by sand, most of these details have been damaged or lost. The missing nose is particularly striking, becoming a highly recognizable feature today. Between the two front paws stands the Dream Stele, placed by the ancient Egyptian Pharaoh Thutmose IV. The inscription records the legend of him receiving divine revelation in a dream at the foot of the statue before ascending to the throne, which is also one of the important clues for scholars to link the Great Sphinx of Giza with Pharaoh Khafre.Giza · 33.9 km from Al Khor

Coptic Cairo is situated on the ruins of the Babylon Fortress, built during the Roman period, and serves as the historical heart of Coptic Christianity in Egypt. Although the area is compact, it is densely packed with several ancient churches, a synagogue, and Coptic Museum, all of which can be easily visited on foot. The Hanging Church within the area is built above the gatehouse of the Babylon Fortress's south gate, with its nave suspended over the passageway, hence its name. The Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus (Abu Serga) is said to be built over the cave where the Holy Family took refuge when they fled to Egypt; visitors can descend into the crypt, which is an important site for Christian pilgrimage. The Church of St. Barbara is renowned for its ancient icons and the relics of Saint Barbara. In addition to the cluster of churches, the Ben Ezra Synagogue is also located here. It is one of the oldest surviving synagogues in Cairo and, together with the surrounding churches, bears witness to the unique history of religious coexistence in this area. Coptic Museum houses a vast collection of early Christian art treasures, including textiles, icons, manuscripts, and stone carvings, making it an essential place for understanding Coptic art. The area's deep, stone-paved alleyways are dotted with old book stalls and small souvenir shops, and strolling through them offers an atmosphere quite distinct from other parts of Cairo.Cairo · 35.4 km from Al Khor

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization is located in Fustat, the old city of Cairo, the site of the capital established after Arabs entered Egypt in the 7th century AD, surrounded by ancient mosques and church complexes to this day. The museum had partially opened some exhibition halls earlier, and in April 2021, it was officially inaugurated with a grand ceremony called "The Pharaohs' Golden Parade," during which a whole batch of ancient Egyptian royal mummies were relocated from the Egyptian Museum in the city center to the new museum, becoming a highly anticipated cultural event. Unlike most exhibitions focusing solely on the pharaonic era, this museum traces the entire thread of Egyptian civilization, housing tens of thousands of artifacts spanning from prehistoric times through the pharaonic era, Greco-Roman period, Coptic era, Islamic era, and up to the modern day, making it ideal for visitors seeking a systematic understanding of Egypt's historical trajectory. The main exhibition hall follows a dual chronological and thematic layout: the timeline progresses through different eras, while thematic zones explore topics such as the dawn of civilization, the Nile, writing, state and society, faith and thought, covering both tangible and intangible cultural heritage. UNESCO provided technical support for the museum's establishment. Here, visitors can see the Nazlet Khater human skeleton dating back tens of thousands of years, the painted coffin of Sennedjem (a tomb artist from Deir el-Medina), the peasant woman statue by modern sculptor Mukhtar, and the textile exhibition hall showcasing Egypt's finest weaving masterpieces through the ages. The royal mummies exhibition hall on the underground level is the highlight of the entire museum: designed to emulate the atmosphere of the Valley of the Kings' burial passages, with dim and solemn lighting, the mummies of pharaohs and queens such as Ramses II, Seti I, and Hatshepsut are displayed in a climate-controlled environment, offering a rare opportunity to observe the true faces of pharaohs up close. It is recommended to first follow the chronological timeline in the main exhibition hall to establish an overall context before descending to the mummies hall for a closer look. If time permits, the nearby Coptic old town and the Amr Mosque built in the 7th century AD can also be combined with a visit to this museum.Cairo · 36 km from Al Khor

At that time, on the way from Luxor to Hurghada, I began to miss the Nile River infinitely. Every time I saw the river, I couldn't help but marvel in my heart. It was just a natural scenery, but it had an unreal beauty, flat and vast. I always lived in southern China and always thought that rivers came from valleys, magnificent or winding, with mountains on both sides, but the Nile River was still flat on both sides. I think there would be no Egypt without the Nile River. In such a hot and dry place that is not suitable for living, it should be this river that can pass through thousands of years without changing and keep people. Now, I have been away from Egypt for more than ten days. The most frequent flash in my memory is still the Nile River. Its beauty seems to allow anything to happen. I suddenly understand Agatha very much. If you face such a miracle every day, it is not surprising that you can write any story. Finally, I actually want to say that the Old Falls Hotel is worth staying (if the budget allows, but the afternoon tea is very bad, so be careful.

In Cairo, mosques and minarets are ubiquitous buildings. In Arabic, minarets are called "minars," which refer to the place where the muezzin stands to call people to prayer. Since the 7th century, with the widespread spread of Islam in West Asia and North Africa, the art of mosque architecture has continued to develop, and minarets have evolved into various styles, becoming an indispensable part of mosque architecture and a highlight of Cairo.
