Carmo Archaeological Museum

Carmo Archaeological Museum

5.3
4.1/5
34 reviews
Carmo Archaeological Museum is located in the quiet Carmo Square in the Chiado district of Lisbon, right next to the Santa Justa Lift, and stands opposite the hill where São Jorge Castle is located. The stone roof of this Gothic convent collapsed during the 1755 Lisbon earthquake and was never rebuilt, leaving only the towering pointed arches, columns, and the remains of the rose window standing open to the sky. The weathered arches meet the sky, making it one of the few remaining visible relics of the great earthquake in the old town. The nave and the old chapels in the apse now serve as exhibition halls for the Carmo Archaeological Museum: the hall displays the Gothic sarcophagus of King Ferdinand I, the Roman-era "Muse Sarcophagus," Christian stone fragments from the Moorish period, and alabaster reliefs depicting the Passion of Christ from a workshop in Nottingham, United Kingdom. Hidden deep in the exhibition hall are pre-Columbian mummies from the Chancay culture of Peru, making this one of the few museums in Portugal that permanently exhibits South American mummies, which often leaves a deep impression on visitors. Returning to the square, a footbridge on one side leads directly to the top level of the Santa Justa Lift. Standing there, you can overlook the red-tiled roofs of the lower town and Rossio Square. The 1974 Carnation Revolution also left its mark here—the old regime that had ruled Portugal for decades announced its surrender at the Carmo headquarters next to the convent, adding a footnote of modern history to the ruins.Lisbon · 4.5 km from Almada

Stadium of Light

27 reviews
The Stadium of Light is also translated as Luz Stadium, and its official name is Benfica Stadium (Estádio doSport Lisboae Benfica). Luz is the name of the parish where the stadium is located, and the word also means "light" in Portuguese, so the stadium is also commonly known as "the stadium of light". The old Luce Stadium was completed in 1954, demolished in 2002, and officially started operations on October 25, 2003. This 5-star stadium can accommodate 64,400 people and has more than 7,000 business seats. It has hosted many European Cup events here, including the final of the 2004 European Cup. It is worth mentioning that the 2014 European high-level competition Champions Cup final was also held here. The Stadium of Light also comes with a museum, a fan shop and a small youth team training pitch. The various exhibits of the museum are arranged chronologically around the important events of Benfica, and the introduction of historical events of the same period is displayed next to it. Traveling all the way along the order arranged by the museum, there is always a feeling of time and space. Of course, the collection that cannot be missed is the two UEFA Champions League trophies won by Benfica!Lisbon · 8.7 km from Almada

Santa Justa Lift, also known as the Carmo Lift (Elevador do Carmo), is the only vertical lift in Lisbon open to the public. It opened to the public on July 10, 1902, and is a great place to enjoy the street views of Lisbon. The lift is located on a commercial pedestrian street east of the Carmo Archaeological Museum, connecting the higher-elevation Carmo Square (Largo do Carmo) with the lower streets of Baixa Pombalina. Here, you can enjoy beautiful scenery, and the restaurant on the observation deck offers delicious dishes. It is also a great place to enjoy a relaxing afternoon coffee. The lift's designer, Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, is also very famous. He was a student of Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (theEiffel Tower designer). The lift was converted from steam power to electricity in 1907 and was designated a national historic monument in 2002.Lisbon · 4.5 km from Almada

The National Palace of Sintra is located in Sintra near Lisbon, Portugal. Construction began under King João I and was not completed until the reign of Manuel I in the 16th century. It is one of Portugal's best-preserved medieval royal palaces, continuously inhabited by royalty from the early 15th century to the late 19th century. The architecture features layered Gothic, Moorish, and Manueline styles, with its most recognizable landmark being two white conical chimneys over 30 m tall resembling a pair of upright bull horns, visible throughout the old town. Before Portugal became a republic, the palace served as the king's summer residence. It houses many distinctive rooms, including the grand Swan Hall adorned with exquisite decorations and a ceiling depicting 27 vividly posed swans. Other notable spaces include the Mermaid Hall with azulejo tilework, the Chinese Room displaying an ivory pagoda, and the Heraldic Hall featuring beautiful tile murals and noble coats of arms. As part of the cultural landscape of Sintra, it is designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.Sintra · 23.8 km from Almada

The Gloria Lift is an old tram-like public transport in Lisbon. Recognized as a National Historic Monument in 2002, it is one of the most used means of transportation in Lisbon and is especially popular with tourists. The elevator was officially opened to the public on October 24, 1885. It was powered by water, and in 1886, it was converted into steam, and in 1915, it became the current electric motor. The tram travels back and forth between Praça Restauradores and S.Pedro de Alcântara, starting from Praça dos Restauradores, and goes up 265 meters all the way to the high area. When tourists come out of the elevator to the San Pedro viewing platform, they can overlook the whole view of Lisbon and the distance. Overlooking St. George's panorama.Lisbon · 4.8 km from Almada

Carmo Convent (Portuguese: Convento da Ordem do Carmo) is a historic building in Lisbon, Portugal. Its medieval buildings were reduced to ruins in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, and the ruins of its Gothic church are the main traces of the earthquake still visible in the city.

If you are a football fan, you should actually watch a game when you come to Lisbon. There are two famous stadiums in Lisbon. The Stadium of Light has more games and more complete facilities, which feels pretty good.

The Belém Tower Garden is a large green space next to the Belém Tower, a world cultural heritage site. The garden is shaded by trees and covered with green grass, and is crowded with citizens strolling and tourists resting. The most eye-catching thing in the garden is an airplane-shaped monument, commemorating the first time a Portuguese pilot flew across the Atlantic Ocean from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1922.

I don't understand why Lisbon has so many truly worthwhile places to see, but I don't really recommend tourist spots like the Grand Monastery or Belém Tower. Those places are indeed worth seeing, perhaps because they're relatively concentrated. But many great places are hidden away and unknown to most. This Royal Palace is one such example. It has dozens of exhibition halls and many exquisite artifacts from the original palace, far more beautiful than the Grand Monastery. Definitely worth a visit.
