Castle d'Angers
Castle d'Angers (Château d'Angers) Castle d'Angers is located in Angers, in the Loire Valley of western France, on the banks of the Maine River. It is one of the most distinctive medieval castles in the Loire Valley region. Unlike other "romantic castles" in the Loire Valley known for their Renaissance style, it is a trueMedieval military fortress, with a solemn and dignified temperament. 1. A giant black-and-white city wall The castle is remarkable for its 17 massive round towers, constructed with alternating layers of black slate (schist) and white limestone, creating a striking black-and-white striped appearance. Majestic and highly distinctive, it stands as a symbol of the power of the Counts of Anjou. 2. The Apocalypse Tapestry (Tapisserie de l'Apocalypse) This is the castle's important treasure and one of the world's largest and most complete surviving medieval tapestries, measuring approx. 100 m in length (currently preserved at approx. 103 m). Created in the late 14th century, it was commissioned by Louis I, Duke of Anjou and brother of French King Charles V. The Apocalypse Tapestry is listed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. 3. Castle garden and view The castle interior preserves courtyards and gardens in medieval style. Walking along the rampart path offers a panoramic view of the old town of Angers and the Maine River. 4.
