Mausoleum for former Turkish leader

4.7/5
143 reviews
Mausoleum for former Turkish leader is located on a small hill southwest of the center of Ankara. The entire complex emphasizes axis and symmetry: ascending the steps leads to the straight-stretching Road of Lions, flanked by 24 Hittite-style stone lion statues. At the end of the road is the Ceremonial Plaza, with its ground paved in carpet patterns of Türkiye, surrounded by colonnades on three sides, with towers named after ideals such as "Independence," "Freedom," "Peace," "Victory," and "Republic" distributed symmetrically. The mausoleum building at the front of the plaza is the core of the site. Inside the Hall of Honor lies a symbolic sarcophagus carved from a single block of red marble, while Atatürk's actual burial chamber is located in the crypt beneath the hall. The two sides of the mausoleum facade are inscribed with his "Address to the Youth of Türkiye" and his 10th Anniversary Speech.Ankara · 1.5 km from downtown

Ankara Castle is a famous tourist attraction in Ankara, located on the high point of the Ankara hillside. A very interesting place to hang out in Ankara, the thick walls and winding streets are well preserved and overlook the panorama of Ankara. It was built by the ancient Romans in the 2nd century BC for military defense. The roads here are intricate and complicated, and the vicissitudes of history are told among the ruins. Because of its strategic location, the castle has been baptized by war and was successively captured by Byzantines, Persians, and Arabs, so there are not many castle buildings left. Today, tourists can still climb the ancient city walls, overlook the panorama of Ankara, and imagine the once smoked battlefield.Ankara · 2.2 km from downtown

It is one of the best museums in Ankara. It starts with the paleolithic period and goes all the way up to the Roman era.It has a great flow to the displays, and the building itself is amazing. There is a lot of information about the early civilization in English, which I appreciated as well as maps to show where everything was excavated from. The garden outside is full of lovely paths to walk around and lots of places to rest.
