The Van Gogh Sanatorium is a square building with a history of more than 300 years, located in the city of Arles. The famous painter Vincent van Gogh was sent here for convalescence after his first mental attack. In order to escape the life of the sanatorium, he cut off his ears by self-mutilation and painted the famous "The Courtyard of the Arles Sanatorium". . Now, it is open to the public as the Van Gogh Tourist Center. Visitors can not only visit the library and various shops, but also enjoy the restored and restored "Arles Sanatorium Courtyard" and other famous Van Gogh paintings.Arles · 161m from downtown

The Colosseum of Arles was built during the reign of the Roman Empire at the end of the 1st century AD. The arena was transformed into a fortress in the Middle Ages and rebuilt as an arena in the 19th century. It is now a temporary bullring from Easter in the spring to September, and is also used as an opera house and a theater for outdoor theater. The entire arena is oval, with a long diameter of 136 meters, a short diameter of 107 meters, and a height of 21 meters. It is a three-story structure surrounded by 60 arches. Although it is a building in the Roman era, the style of classical Greek architecture can be seen from pillars, decorations, stone carvings, etc. Climb to the tower above the entrance for a view of the ancient city of Arles, the Rhone River and the surrounding mountains. The current Arles Arena is famous for bullfights and is still in use today. It is one of the few places in France where you can see bullfights. This is very attractive to bullfighting fans, and it is often hard to get a ticket. In addition to bullfights, plays and concerts are also held here in summer.Arles · 300m from downtown

The ancient theater is an ancient Roman building in the southern French city of Arles, built during the reign of the Roman emperor Augustus at the end of the 1st century BC, shortly after the establishment of the Roman colony. Started between 40 and 30 BC and completed around 12 BC, it was one of the earlier stone theaters built in Rome. The auditorium of the theater is fan-shaped, and now there are only 20 rows left. In its heyday, there were 34 rows of seats, which could accommodate 10,000 spectators at the same time. At that time, the stage was also gorgeous and spectacular. The stone pillars on which the curtains were hung were 20 meters high, but now only two broken pillars less than 10 meters in the middle of the venue remain. The theater has now been used as a venue for national costume festivals, photography exhibitions, film exhibitions and other venues, and various theater festivals and concerts are often held here. Especially on midsummer nights, open-air concerts are often held here, and listening to the performances under the starry sky without barriers is also a special enjoyment.Arles · 196m from downtown

The Carrière Museum of Time was originally a large local quarry. After mining, it was developed into a famous projection museum. Every year, it exhibits the works of different artists, and uses projection video technology combined with music effects to skillfully project paintings on different walls and floors, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the modern art of sound, light and electricity.Les Baux-de-Provence · 15.8 km from Arles

Palais des Papes

4.5/5
205 reviews
The Palais des Papes stands majestically on the rocky heights at the northern end of the old town of Avignon, overlooking the Rhône River. It is one of the largest medieval Gothic buildings in Europe. In the early 14th century, the papal court moved to Avignon, and for nearly seventy years thereafter, several popes successively resided here, earning Avignon the title of "the papal city." The palace and fortress are integrated into one, with thick walls and multiple towers guarding its perimeter. Inside, it is divided into the old palace and the new palace: the old palace, built during the reign of Benedict XII, is simple and sturdy, with a strong defensive character; the new palace, expanded by Clement VI, is magnificent and grand, representing mature Gothic architecture, including the over-50-meter-long great chapel within its walls. Historical calamities have scattered most of the interior furnishings, making the architecture itself the main attraction—Giovannetti's frescoes on the domes and walls of the Saint Martial and Saint John chapels, the full-wall hunting scenes in the pope's study "Hall of the Stag," along with the lofty and spacious conference hall and the hall where cardinals once convened to elect the pope, still evoke the grandeur of the past. The tour route is quite long, with most halls now featuring plain stone walls, though the two small frescoed chapels and the "Hall of the Stag" are particularly worth close attention. The spacious halls make good use of the multimedia tablets available for virtual reconstructions, allowing visitors to "see" the original furnishings. From the palace's elevated terrace, you can enjoy panoramic views of the old town's red-tiled roofs and the Rhône River, with the nearby Pont Saint-Bénézet also fully visible. The Avignon Theatre Festival, held every summer, uses the palace courtyard as one of its main stages—visiting during this time lets you experience the lively atmosphere that takes over the old town.Avignon · 33.7 km from Arles

Château des Baux-de-Provence is located in the Provence region of France, perched on a cliff like an ancient vulture. Though the old main tower is weathered, it stands tall, as if guarding its former dignity. Amidst the crumbling walls, one can still glimpse the piety and solemnity of the past. It is this very imperfection that gives it a unique aesthetic value—a fusion of nature and humanity, a profound dialogue between ruins and life. From the highest point of the château, you can take in the magnificent scenery of Provence. Today, the Château des Baux-de-Provence is no longer a symbol of power, but has become a haven for history and art. It features full-scale replicas of medieval siege engines, transporting visitors back to the era of knights and castles. The well-preserved village of Les Baux below still maintains its medieval architectural layout and atmosphere, creating a dialogue across time with the castle ruins above.Les Baux-de-Provence · 15.3 km from Arles

The Archaeological Museum of Arles in Provence mainly displays artifacts from pre-Roman sites. The mosaics, sarcophagi and other exhibits on display here are astonishingly beautiful, and there are models that reproduce the city of Arles in Roman times. Although this is a museum that exhibits ancient artifacts, the exterior decoration design is very modern and avant-garde, and the triangular building frame and the novel and unique entryway are also the highlights of the visit.Arles · 971m from downtown

At the time of its initial construction, Montmajour was an island some 43 meters above the marshland terrain that surrounded it. However, a lot has changed since the building's humble beginnings. This ticket lets you explore one of the most fascinating sites around Arles. You'll understand why Van Gogh made it one of his subjects, and how more than a thousand years of development shaped its purpose and its grand exterior.Arles · 4.4 km from downtown

Van Gogh Sanatorium is a memorial building. It is quite large and is also one of the most important sanatoriums in the area. The surrounding scenery is very nice and there are many historical buildings. The city is not very big, but it is indeed very warm.

This subsidiary product of the ancient Roman Empire is now used for performances, and many cultural and artistic programs are recorded here! After thousands of years of wind and rain, it is still well preserved, which is not easy. Standing on the side and looking at the arena, it is very majestic!

Another famous relic in Arles is the ancient theater, which was built at the end of the first century BC. The scale of the ancient theater can be imagined from the towering columns that remain at the back.

Finally checked out two of Avignon's most iconic landmarks in the South of France! On one side is the Papal Palace, the massive mansion of the former popes, and on the other is the famous Pont d'Hôtel de l'Étoile (the broken bridge from the children's song). Both are just a few minutes' walk apart, and buying a combined ticket is even more cost-effective! 🏰 Papal Palace (Grand Papal Palace) It's breathtaking from afar. The massive stone walls are solid and imposing, befitting its status as the world's largest Gothic palace. Seven popes lived and worked here, making it the center of power in medieval Europe. The interior has numerous rooms, and the free tablet-based guided tour is incredibly useful. It recreates the rooms' original appearance, showing surviving old frescoes, a huge banquet hall, and the popes' bedrooms. Although most of the furniture is long gone, leaving only the stone walls, you can still imagine the grandeur of the Papacy in its heyday. You absolutely must climb to the rooftop terrace! It's an unparalleled viewpoint, offering a panoramic view of the Rhône River and the Pont d'Hôtel de l'Étoile, along with the red rooftops of the old town – perfect for taking stunning photos. A friendly reminder: If you're not interested in medieval history, this might feel a bit empty, but those who love exploring old buildings will adore it. 🌉 Pont Saint-Bénézet (commonly known as the Pont des Beaux-Arts in Avignon) Legend has it that a shepherd boy was guided by a divine oracle to build this bridge. Originally, it had 22 arches, but the Rhône River flooded it year after year. After a massive flood destroyed most of it, the locals decided the repair costs were too high and simply gave up, leaving only four arches. 😂 It's the inspiration for the French nursery rhyme "On the Pont des Beaux-Arts in Avignon"! Standing on the broken bridge, feeling the river breeze, watching the water flow by, and with a small chapel nearby, you can explore this short stretch in about half an hour. Although you can no longer cross to the other side, its ruined state adds to its charm, and the view of the Papal Palace from the bridge is a superb angle. 💡In summary: The Papal Palace offers a rich historical atmosphere and panoramic views, while the Pont des Papes (the bridge over the Papal States) provides romantic photo opportunities and perfect for recreating childhood memories. The two complement each other perfectly. After exploring the Papal Palace, wander into the old town's alleyways and find a small café to relax – this is the true way to experience southern France. I recommend buying a combined ticket for the Papal Palace and the Pont des Papes; this allows you to leisurely visit both places in one day, and half a day is sufficient.

This castle is definitely worth visiting and is recommended by French travel guides. The scenery from the castle is breathtaking. There's also a famous three-Michelin-starred restaurant nearby. Unfortunately, buses only run here in the summer; at other times, you have to drive yourself.
