In the 15th century, the rock was called the "Cucurlon Peninsula" and later Napoleon III walked through it. A 75-meter-high viaduct was built on the rock to connect to the coast. In 1865, a statue of the Virgin and Child was built, and in 1887 a metal bridge was built to replace the wooden bridge of 1863. Today, this place has become the symbol of Biarritz.

As a complex co-construction of the Italian royal family and Catholic monasteries in France, in addition to being a Cistercians monastery in the past and later a Benedictine monastery of the Black Monks (Ordo Sancti Benedicti), it has also been the burial place of members of the Italian Savoy dynasty (Casa Savoia, 1861-1946) for centuries.
