Saltstraumen
Saltstraumen, located near Bodo, Norway, is recognized as having the world's strongest tidal currents, connecting the Saltfjorden and the Skjerstad Fjord. Approximately every 6 hours, over 400 million cubic meters of water force their way through a narrow strait about 150 m wide at peak speeds of up to 22 knots, pushing water from one fjord into the other and creating massive whirlpools up to 10 m or more in diameter on the surface. The roaring sound and the power of the currents are spectacular. Benefiting from the rich nutrients brought by the currents, this is also a well-known fishing spot in Norway, where cod gather in large numbers in the current area.
