The tall façade was designed by the German architect Heinrich Schlegelholt in the early 15th century, and the surrounding five towers are commonly known as the English Tower, Italian Tower, German Tower, French Tower and Gasser Tower. Bodrum Castle is nearly square overall, measuring 590 x 606 feet, and its high point is 155.8 feet (47.5 meters) above sea level. The entrance to the castle is located in the northwest corner, and the interior of the castle can be accessed through 7 gates. The north and west are double-layered structures. On the sloping roof on the west side, there is a cannon bunker. At present, the castle includes five surrounding towers, all of which have been transformed into the Bodrum Underwater Archaeological Museum.Bodrum · 314m from downtown

The Mausoleum of Mausolus is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Bodrum (formerly known as Halicarnassus) in southwestern Turkey, considered one of the "Seven Wonders of the Ancient World." Historical Background: The mausoleum was built in the 4th century BC by Mausolus, ruler of the Caria region, as his burial place. Mausolus' wife (and sister), Artemisia II, commissioned the construction of this magnificent mausoleum after his death, intending to honor Mausolus and highlight the glory of his reign. Architectural Features: The Mausoleum blends Greek, Egyptian, and Persian architectural styles, showcasing the pinnacle of architectural and artistic achievement of the time. The mausoleum stands approximately 45 meters tall and comprises multiple levels: a base, a main floor with columns, intricately decorated with reliefs and sculptures, a pyramidal roof, and a statue of Mausolus and Artemisia riding a chariot. The interior and exterior of the mausoleum are covered in exquisite carvings, primarily depicting mythological and historical scenes. Several Greek sculptors (such as Skopas, Brooks, and Theophrastus) collaborated on the mausoleum's decoration. Current Status and Remains: An earthquake in the 12th century severely damaged the mausoleum. In the early 16th century, locals used some of the stone to build the Castle of St. Peter, leaving only the ruins of the main structure. Today, visitors can see some of the mausoleum's foundations, scattered stones, and carving fragments in Bodrum. Sculptures and architectural fragments unearthed from the Mausoleum of Mausolus are now housed in the British Museum in London, England. The Mausoleum of Mausolus is not only a symbol of ancient royal power and architectural art, but its name also became the origin of the word "mausoleum." It is a valuable source of physical evidence for the study of ancient Greek and Near Eastern architecture, sculpture, religion, and history.Bodrum · 689m from downtown

Windmills Bodrum

Windmills Bodrum

3.1
Bodrum's windmills are one of the city's most recognizable landmarks, attracting countless visitors for sightseeing and photo opportunities. Built between the 18th and 20th centuries, these windmills were used for grinding flour and are symbols of local history and industry. Standing approximately 10 meters tall, they are conical in shape, with impellers and weather vanes atop them, automatically rotating according to wind direction. These windmills embody the ingenuity of traditional artisans and the history of wind power. Beyond their architectural beauty and historical charm, the narrow streets surrounding the windmills add to their charm. Visitors can stroll through these alleyways, admiring the Mediterranean-style white stone buildings, blue window frames, and characteristic courtyards. The surrounding area is dotted with small restaurants, cafes, and unique shops, perfect for shopping, dining, and relaxing, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in Bodrum's cultural atmosphere. The Bodrum Windmill District is not only a popular photo spot but also a vantage point for panoramic views of the city and the Aegean Sea. The windmills and the bay create a captivating backdrop, especially at dawn or sunset, creating a captivating scene.Bodrum · 1.7 km from downtown

Each of the castle towers is named after the country that financed its construction. These are the English, German, French, Italian and Spanish towers. The fortress walls are decorated with knightly coats of arms, and in some places you can find inscriptions. There are a couple of cafes and a small souvenir shop on the territory.Business Hours: daily: 9:00 - 16:30, day off - Monday. Some halls are closed for lunch from 12:00 to 13:00
