Green Mosque

5.6
4.5/5
11 reviews
Green Mosque is located in the Yeşil neighborhood on the east side of the historic city of Bursa, Türkiye. It is often regarded as a masterpiece of early Ottoman architecture, with its inverted T-shaped floor plan and two-story symmetrical hall structure showcasing the construction and aesthetic standards of the empire's capital period. It is worth noting that the name Green comes from the extensive green tiles inside the mosque, rather than the color of the exterior walls, which often surprises first-time visitors. The highlights inside the mosque are concentrated on the tiles and marble carvings: the mihrab, which indicates the direction of prayer, is composed of blue, purple, white, and yellow glazed tiles in geometric and vine patterns, with muqarnas narrowing layer by layer inside the niche, and a Persian inscription above, noting that it was the work of artisans invited from Tabriz; the marble carvings on the entrance porch and window lintels are equally intricate and worth admiring. Directly beneath the central dome is an octagonal marble fountain, where daylight spills onto the water from the dome's lantern windows, making it a spot where many visitors stop to take photos; the walls of the Sultan's lodge on the second floor are covered with gold-painted tiles, with star and polygonal patterns that shimmer with gold in the light.Bursa · 654m from downtown
Bursa Grand Mosque

Bursa Grand Mosque

5.1
5.0/5
5 reviews
Bursa Grand Mosque is located in the center of the old city of Bursa, Türkiye, adjacent to the historic bazaar, and is a landmark building from the period when the Ottoman Empire made Bursa its capital. It was commissioned by Sultan Bayezid I and built under the direction of architect Ali Neccar between 1396 and 1399 to commemorate the victory in the Battle of Nicopolis. Bursa Grand Mosque is a rectangular hall with twenty domes arranged in four rows and five columns, supported by twelve massive square pillars, with two minarets standing on the east and west sides. This multi-dome style inherits the Seljuk architectural tradition and is a classic paradigm of early Ottoman mosques. In the center of the hall is an ablution fountain set on an eighteen-sided pool. The dome above it opens to the sky and is now covered with glass; daylight falls onto the water through the opening, illuminating a corner of the dim hall, which is also a popular spot for photographing light and shadow. The walls and columns are covered with nearly two hundred large-scale Arabic calligraphic works by more than forty master Ottoman calligraphers, featuring verses from the Quran, Hadith, and the 99 Names of Allah, earning the entire hall the title of "Calligraphy Museum." The walnut minbar next to the mihrab is assembled and carved using the Kundekari mortise-and-tenon technique, fully decorated with geometric patterns and vine motifs, without the use of a single nail or glue, and is considered a model of the Anatolian Seljuk woodworking tradition.Bursa · 457m from downtown
Cumalikizik Village (UNESCO)

Cumalikizik Village (UNESCO)

5.1
4.5/5
20 reviews
Cumalikizik Village (UNESCO) is located east of Bursa at the northern foot of Uludag. Founded in the early 14th century, this early Ottoman village has a history spanning approx. 700 years. Since its inception, it served to supply goods to the mosque complexes in Bursa, with agricultural produce long transported to the city, making it a vivid example of the urban-rural relationship during the early Ottoman Empire. Built along the mountain terrain, the village features over 200 remaining traditional houses, most of which are still inhabited by villagers. The old houses typically feature stone ground floors and wooden upper floors, with painted exterior walls, protruding bay windows, and heavy courtyard gates scattered along the slope. The alleys are paved with natural stone slabs, and the road surface is slightly inclined toward the center to allow rainwater to flow down the middle of the street. In the narrowest sections, there is only enough space for one or two people to pass sideways. The square at the village entrance is shaded by old plane trees, with the mosque and market stalls concentrated in this area. The village's traditional lifestyle continues to this day. Women often set up stalls in front of their homes to sell freshly baked Türkiye flatbread, raspberry jam, and handmade noodles. The village breakfast, known for its richness, is a signature experience here, and many people travel specifically to enjoy a meal in the old courtyards.Bursa · 9 km from downtown
Inkaya Historical Plane Tree

Inkaya Historical Plane Tree

4.4
At the foot of the small village of İnkaya in Bursa Province, Türkiye, stands a legendary tree known as the Inkaya Historical Plane Tree. It has stood for centuries, witnessing the passage of history and time. Its thick trunk and winding branches, like the veins of time, open up a lush canopy above. Approaching it, visitors feel as if they have stepped into an ancient forest sanctuary—a gentle breeze rustles through the leaves, and sunlight filters through the layers of foliage, creating a dappled effect. Tea gardens and snack stalls are set up beneath the tree, where travelers can enjoy a cup of Turkish tea, sit in the shade of the ancient tree, listen to the rustling leaves, and watch the world go by. Legend has it that this ancient tree is connected to the founding of the early empire, and stories circulate in the village that it was once a symbol of growth and strength. As a uniquely charming tourist destination, it offers both tranquility and awe. Visitors can pause deep within the ancient wood to feel the vastness of nature, or rest under the green shade to experience the local leisure and hospitality.Bursa · 4.3 km from downtown

Ağlayan Çınar

Ağlayan Çınar

4.2
Ağlayan Çınar is a historic plane tree at the entrance of the Gölyazı peninsula, regarded by locals as a witness to and symbol of a legendary romance. The tree is massive with a notably hollow trunk, making it a unique spot for visitors to stop for photos and experience the village's waterfront scenery and historical sentiment. The legend stems from a love story during the Ottoman-Greek era: the romance between a Greek girl named Eleni and a man named Mehmet ended in tragedy amidst the backdrop of war, leading the tree to be called the "Weeping Plane Tree." Folklore claims the tree sheds tears for their love, making it a core part of Gölyazı's cultural memory.
