Canterbury Cathedral was built in AD 324 and is one of the oldest and well-known Christian buildings in Britain. In 1452, Nicholas V ordered to rebuild it. Porta and Carlo Martell successively presided over the design and construction, and finally completed the present appearance in 1626. It is the cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury, bishop of the Anglican Church. The official name of the church is "Canterbury Cathedral and Archbishop's Church". The church has been listed as a world cultural heritage. The Holy Trinity Chapel is in memory of Archbishop Thomas Beckett, who was killed here in 1170 AD. The whole church includes a monastery, a cloister, a monastery and a Norman water tower that have been handed down. Now Canterbury Cathedral has become one of the must-see attractions in the UK!Canterbury · 274m from downtown

White Cliffs of Dover

53 reviews
White Cliffs of Dover are a stretch of chalk cliffs on the southeast coast of England, facing the English Channel. On clear days, the coastline of France is faintly visible across the channel. The white color of the cliffs comes from chalk formed by the long-term accumulation of marine organism remains and shell fragments, with black flint stripes interspersed between the rock layers. The white cliff faces, the green grass on top, and the blue sea below create a striking contrast, and they have long been an important landmark for sailors to identify the United Kingdom. The trail leads east to the South Foreland Lighthouse, a Victorian-era white lighthouse standing atop the cliffs. The cliff tops are also home to chalk grasslands, which host a variety of butterflies and insects rarely seen elsewhere in the United Kingdom, as well as unique plants adapted to the calcareous soil. The cliffs also carry military history. Wartime tunnels were carved deep into the chalk layers; among them, the Fan Bay Deep Shelter was built during World War II to protect soldiers during air raids, and graffiti left by soldiers at that time still remains on the tunnel walls. These underground spaces, along with the remains of gun batteries on the cliff tops, record the role of the cliffs as a national defense outpost.Saint Margaret's at Cliffe · 25.3 km from Canterbury

This is a very worthwhile church to visit. It was built in the Middle Ages, more than 1,000 years ago, and is one of the oldest Christian buildings in the UK. After years of expansion and renovation, it is quite magnificent. Gothic architecture, colorful glass, and the original appearance is preserved intact. It is a pity that there is no Chinese version of the audio guide at present.

Visitors commonly mention its peaceful atmosphere, making it a lovely spot for a stroll or a picnic. The gardens run along the River Stour, providing picturesque water views, especially with the weeping willows and vibrant flower beds. The area is well-maintained, and it's a favorite for both locals and tourists who appreciate nature.

It was a lovely trip. There is a good walk to the end of the cliff if you are coming by train. At places, the walk is naturally steep because it's a hill, so I won't prefer going on the hottest days. The best time I would say would be March-April or August.

The bunker of Dover Castle was the command post of the Dunkirk evacuation, and there was also an attached hospital. The view from the castle is excellent, you can see the sea, the city, and the castle green. There are not so many people, at least there is a lack of commercial facilities.

Ahh, so wanted to leave a positive review, but we left feeling disappointed. Our first visit and sadly our last. 4 adults ( parents, 18 and 16 year olds ) . Way too many empty enclosures. We couldn’t find any information about the history of the park and the Aspinall family. Too many park vehicles driving around the site which made it feel unsafe for those with younger children. Gift shops very much geared towards younger children. We were ready to spend money, but, nothing to spend it on !’ We couldn’t find the farm shop which is advertised on the website. Staff looked at me blankly when I asked. We had 1 day out planned this half term after a difficult year and we feel a little cheated.

Seeing some friends asking what style of chapel this is, I thought I'd write something... St Augustine Abbey, a monastery known as a world cultural heritage, is worth a visit. It is one of the most important monasteries in medieval England, with fascinating architecture, majestic memorials, and a charming atmosphere. Visiting this place is to seek spiritual cultivation, giving us the opportunity to touch the birthplace of spiritual cultivation in the English world. For nearly a thousand years, St Augustine's Abbey has been a center of learning and Christian spirituality. When these missionaries realized the difficulties they faced, Augustine and his companions wanted to give up their mission. But Pope Gregory strongly opposed it, so they were forced to continue their mission. They eventually arrived in the Kingdom of Kent, where King Ethelberht of Kent was one of the most powerful men in England. Although he had not yet converted to Christianity, perhaps because he married a Christian wife, King Ethelbert welcomed Augustine and his missionaries and let them land outside the walls of the East City of Canterbury. Augustine and his companions did not initially have much success in Canterbury. Later, with the help of Queen Bertha, King Ethelbert eventually converted to Christianity, and then more and more of his subjects did the same. Augustine later became the first archbishop of Canterbury (the capital of the Kingdom of Kent). The kings of England successively became Christian countries, and Canterbury became the religious capital of England. Within 100 years, Augustine's work changed the whole of England, and the monastery named after him was the center of British Christianity. Over the centuries, St. Augustine's Abbey developed into a great Romanesque monastery, one of the grandest and most influential monasteries in Europe. However, this power and influence did not last. During the reign of Henry VIII, the great monastery was destroyed. Walking among the ruins and breathing the ancient atmosphere can temporarily take us away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
