Qianfo Mountain Scenic Area

Qianfo Mountain Scenic Area is located in the southern part of Jinan's city center and is one of the three major attractions in Jinan. Before the Zhou Dynasty, it was called Lishan Mountain. Legend has it that Emperor Shun cultivated farmland at its base, hence it's also known as Shungeng Mountain. During the Sui Dynasty's Kaihuang era, numerous Buddha statues were carved along the mountain slopes, and the "Thousand Buddha Temple" was built, giving rise to its current name. In 1959, it was developed into a park, recognized as a provincial-level scenic area in 1995, rated as a national AAAA-level tourist attraction in 2005, and designated as a national scenic area in 2017. The Qianfo Mountain Scenic Area covers an area of 164.88 hectares, with its highest peak reaching 285m in elevation. Its undulating ridges create a picturesque and magnificent landscape. Qing Dynasty writer Liu E once vividly described it in "The Travels of Lao Can" as "resembling a grand painting by Song Dynasty artist Zhao Qianli, stretched across the horizon like a magnificent screen spanning dozens of miles." Qianfo Mountain Scenic Area boasts a profound historical and cultural heritage, centered around the culture of Emperor Shun, Buddhist traditions, and natural ecology. It stands as a renowned mountain where Buddhist culture and imperial heritage coexist. As one of the birthplaces of Shun culture, the mountain gained fame when Emperor Shun cultivated its slopes. The attraction preserves cultural landmarks like Lishan Academy, Shun Temple, Three Saints Hall, Dushun Stone Garden, and Lishan Origins. Its Buddhist heritage dates back to the Sui and Tang dynasties, with notable sites including Xingguo Temple and the Thousand Buddha Cliff carvings. The scenic area features exceptional natural beauty with ancient trees and attractions like Chrysanthemum Viewing, Lishan Panorama, Ancient Scholar Tree, Southern Red Cliffs, and Ciyun Exploration. Distinctive folk traditions include the March 3rd Temple Fair and September 9th Mountain Festival, both recognized as intangible cultural heritage. Combining rich cultural significance with abundant natural resources and prominent geographical value, this urban mountain landscape serves as Jinan's "city balcony," "natural oxygen bar," and "ecological paradise," offering residents leisure and fitness opportunities rarely found within a metropolitan area. In recent years, the Qianfo Mountain Scenic Area has achieved remarkable development. Since 2011, annual environmental upgrades have enhanced ecological landscaping, highlighted historical and cultural themes, and elevated the overall views and cultural value of the attraction. In 2013, the Qilu Stele Culture Garden—a Jinan-based theme park showcasing Shandong's finest stone inscriptions—was built at the mountain's southern foot. Since 2014, to promote Shun culture, attractions like the South Wind Pavilion, Homesickness Pavilion, Qingyun Pavilion, and Lishan Origins were added, forming a 10-site Shun culture trail with distinctive Spring City characteristics. This integration of history, culture, and scenery has created a comprehensive, large-scale destination beloved by visitors.China · Jinan

The new Yinxu Museum officially opened on February 26, 2024. In terms of architectural design, following a global competition, the design by Academician He Jingtang from South China University of Technology was selected. Inspired by the "Shang Hymns" from the Book of Songs, the design features elements such as green wild grass platforms, a grand earth structure, layered depth, and bronze cladding. It emphasizes a green, low-carbon, and sustainable development model, creating a "model of China, a temple of civilization" with cultural connotations and archaeological significance related to the Yin Ruins. Regarding the exhibition layout, the museum focuses on the theme of "The Great Shang Civilization," featuring three permanent exhibitions, four special exhibitions, and one unique immersive digital exhibition. These exhibitions explore various aspects such as Shang Dynasty history, oracle bone studies, archaeological history, and the global influence of Shang civilization. They comprehensively illustrate the flourishing urban civilization, sophisticated ritual and music culture, advanced bronze civilization, brilliant written language, and superior craftsmanship of the Shang Dynasty, vividly presenting its significant role and impact on Chinese civilization and the development of human civilization. In terms of design style, the museum adheres to a solemn and grand aesthetic, extensively utilizing artificial intelligence, multimedia, and other digital technologies. This approach provides new contemporary expressions for artifacts, documents, and oracle bone inscriptions, enhancing the breadth, depth, and precision of the panoramic presentation of Shang civilization. It creates an interactive space between artifacts, history, and digital virtual environments.China · Anyang

Daxiangguo Temple, originally named Jianguo Temple, is the place where Lu Zhishen uprooted a willow tree in "Water Margin." The temple was first built in 555 AD during the Northern Qi Dynasty. In 712 AD, Emperor Ruizong of Tang, Li Dan, renamed it "Daxiangguo Temple" to commemorate his ascension to the throne as the Prince of Xiang and personally inscribed the plaque. The temple reached its peak during the Northern Song Dynasty, serving as the imperial temple at that time. Most of the current structures in Daxiangguo Temple were rebuilt in recent years, and the temple's scale is much smaller than it was in its heyday. After entering the temple gate, you will encounter the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Mahavira Hall, the Hall of Five Hundred Arhats, and the Scripture Tower in sequence. The Arhat Hall, commonly known as the "Hall of Five Hundred Arhats," is an octagonal corridor-style structure. Inside the hall's corridor, there is a large group sculpture titled "Sakyamuni Preaching the Dharma," featuring five hundred arhats in various vivid poses. At the center of the Arhat Hall, travelers can also admire a wooden octagonal pavilion housing a approx. 6 m tall wooden statue of the "Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Guanyin." This statue, a cultural relic from the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty, was carved from a single ginkgo tree. Each of its four sides has six large arms and over 200 small arms, with each small palm bearing a wisdom eye—totaling more than 1,000 eyes, hence its name. The sutra depository is located in the rear part of the temple complex and now serves as the activity venue for Kaifeng calligraphy and painting academy. The building is adorned with calligraphy and painting works in various styles, which travelers can view or purchase. The bell tower also houses a large bronze bell cast during the Qianlong reign of the Qing dynasty (1768), a precious cultural relic of the temple.China · Kaifeng

The hotel staff were all very friendly and the environment was fantastic. We could easily visit the old town countless times a day, making it especially suitable for families with children and elderly members. The value for money was excellent, especially the receptionists – a huge thumbs up! 👍 The shows in the old town were wonderful, especially the water show – don't miss it! Unexpectedly, it was a special session with Teacher Lu. The coordination was very smooth, with a dedicated assistant team. The team members were all dressed formally. Teacher Lu's explanation was witty, humorous, vivid, and captivating. The route was planned according to the historical timeline, and the headset was very clear. Although there were many people, we still managed to see all ten of the museum's most treasured exhibits.

Climbing Thousand Buddha Mountain offers panoramic views of Jinan and provides opportunities to watch the sunset. The park also features the "Four Caves, Myriad Images" grotto art exhibition, allowing visitors to appreciate the essence of China's four major grottoes in one place. The soft lighting makes it perfect for taking photos. Outside the caves stands the 15-meter-tall Leshan Giant Buddha. I personally recommend entering from the East Gate (Art Academy Gate) and exiting from the North Gate for a better experience.

The most anticipated part of our trip to Anyang was visiting the Yin Ruins Museum. We were fortunate to have a guided tour with Professor Li Yu today, which made the trip worthwhile. Although Professor Li was not feeling well, his explanations were not affected at all. The content was detailed, vivid, and informative, and we learned a lot. The tour, which was originally scheduled for 3 hours, was extended to 4 hours by Professor Li, who was very responsible. My mother was very touched.

Part of the representative canyons of the Southern Taihang Mountains, it boasts both the grandeur of towering red cliffs and the charm of Peach Blossom Valley with its streams, pools, and waterfalls, offering a perfect blend of mountains and water. The Peach Blossom Valley trails are gentle and shady, making it cool in summer and ideal for leisurely walks with middle school students. The Taihang Sky Road, situated on a cliff ridge, offers expansive views overlooking the surrounding mountains, perfect for taking photos. Wangxiangyan is known for its thrilling mountain climbing, with its towering ladders and cliffside walkways, suitable for those who enjoy hiking and adventure. In short: it's well worth the trip for the natural beauty of the Taihang Mountains; the scenery alone justifies the price. However, it gets very crowded during peak season, so don't expect a smooth and hassle-free experience. A leisurely two-day trip is recommended, and it's a great option to combine it with the Red Flag Canal and Guoliang Village on a Southern Taihang loop tour.
