Anhui Museum (New Building)

4.7/5
1.7k reviews
The Anhui Provincial Museum (new building), located in Hefei, opened in 2011 and is the main museum area. The building itself is a highlight: its architectural design draws inspiration from the traditional Hui-style residences, featuring interconnected buildings with white walls and black tiles that enclose a central courtyard, covering an area of over 40,000 square meters. The museum houses over 200,000 artifacts, with Shang and Zhou bronzes, Han dynasty stone carvings, Song and Yuan dynasty gold and silver wares, the Four Treasures of the Study (writing brush, ink stick, inkstone, and paper), and Hui-style carvings being its most distinctive features. The permanent exhibition, "Anhui Civilization History Exhibition," traces the history from prehistoric jade artifacts of Lingjiatan to the Ming and Qing dynasties, with its popularity concentrated on several important bronze artifacts: the Zhuke Ding (also known as the Chu Ding), unearthed from the tomb of King You of Chu in Shouxian County, is astonishing in size, with a twelve-character inscription engraved on its rim, named after the first two characters "Zhuke" (铸客). The characters "Anbang" (安邦) are also cast on its front legs and underside. The Ejun Qijin Jie (鄂君启金节), a tax-free confirmation voucher for vehicle and ship transportation issued by the King of Chu, resembles a split bamboo section. The five round pillars of the Western Zhou cloud-patterned bronze five-column vessel stand equidistantly on a square base; their purpose remains undetermined, but their resemblance to a router often brings a knowing smile to visitors' faces. The special exhibitions are also worth spending time on. The "Ancient Architecture of Huizhou" exhibition hall showcases the beauty of Huizhou architecture through water features, ancestral halls, memorial archways, and wood, stone, and brick carvings. At its heart is the Feng Renjing Residence, a Qing Dynasty house relocated from Shexian County and rebuilt exactly as it was. With a central courtyard and a "回" (hui) shaped floor plan, visitors can walk into the courtyard and look up to see how the water from the four slopes flows into it. The "Four Treasures of the Study" exhibition brings together Xuan paper, Huizhou ink, Xuan brushes, and She inkstones. The "Treasures of Jianghuai" exhibition is small yet exquisite; a Southern Song Dynasty gold-rimmed agate bowl with a warm, translucent luster, and a Yuan Dynasty lacquer box with carved cloud patterns bearing an inscription on the bottom, demonstrate the exquisite craftsmanship even to those unfamiliar with antiques. The adjacent Anhui Provincial Geological Museum is a good option to visit on the same day. It is recommended to set aside half a day: first see the bronze artifacts in the "Anhui Civilization History Exhibition", and then visit the "Ancient Architecture of Huizhou", "Anhui Stationery", and "Treasures of Jianghuai" in that order; if time is limited, prioritize the first two exhibition halls. Don't just take photos at the entrance of Feng Renjing's residence; you can only truly appreciate it by walking into the courtyard.China · Hefei

Ancient Longzhong

4.4/5

Ancient Longzhong is located among the mountains west of Xiangyang city, where Zhuge Liang lived in seclusion during his youth. Legend has it that this place is surrounded by mountains, with only one peak "rising abruptly in the center," standing prominently among the ridges, hence the name "Longzhong." At the age of seventeen, Zhuge Liang came here with his uncle, farming and studying diligently for nearly a decade, earning the nickname "Crouching dragon." Later, Liu Bei visited his thatched cottage three times, and Zhuge Liang proposed the "Longzhong Plan" outlining the tripartite division of the world. Ancient Longzhong thus became known as the "cradle of wisdom" and the "birthplace of the tripartite division strategy." Today, the attraction still preserves traces of this history: the Wuhou Temple, originally built during the Jin dynasty, rises in tiers along the mountain slope as a site for commemorating Zhuge Liang; the Three visits hall was constructed to honor Liu Bei's three visits, with ancient cypresses in front said to be the very trees where Liu, Guan, and Zhang tied their horses; thatched cottage pavilion, farming fields, small rainbow bridge, hexagonal well, old dragon cave, and knee-embracing rock collectively form the "Ten scenes of Longzhong" passed down since the Ming dynasty—the knee-embracing rock is believed to be where Zhuge sat chanting "Liangfu yin." At the entrance stands a Qing-dynasty bluestone archway inscribed with "Ancient Longzhong," flanked by phrases from "Admonitions to my son"—"Indifference to fame reveals one's ambition" and "Tranquility leads to far-reaching vision"—with Du Fu's famous couplet "Three visits exhausted the world's schemes, two reigns revealed the veteran's heart" carved on pillars, serving as the attraction's iconic photo spot. Hiking up to Tenglong Pavilion atop the mountain offers panoramic views of Longzhong's forests and fields; nestled in the valley lies a thatched-roof theater once staging the large-scale outdoor drama "Thatched cottage: Zhuge Liang," chronicling his life. "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" describes this place as having "hills not lofty but elegant, waters not deep but clear." The leisurely pace of the visit allows you to share the story of the Three Visits to the Thatched Cottage with your children as you stroll. If you're interested in Zhuge Liang's life, we recommend setting aside half a day to explore the inscriptions and exhibits in detail, which is more rewarding than a hurried visit.China · Xiangyang

Tiantangzhai is located where Anhui's Jinzhai County and Hubei's Luotian County meet and is one of the major attractions of the Dabie Mountains. The scenic area is named after the main peak, Tiantangzhai, which is also called Tiantang Summit. It is the second highest summit in the Dabie Mountains and serves as the divide between the Yangtze and Huai River watersheds. One reason to visit Tiantangzhai is to hike and breathe the fresh air. The new Anhui Provincial Museum features a Hui-style "four waters returning to the hall" design, exuding grandeur and tranquility. Admission is free, but remember to make a reservation in advance. The exhibition halls unfold along a historical timeline, from the Lingjiatan Jade Pig and the Zhuke Ding (a large bronze vessel), to the Wu King Guangjian (a bronze mirror) and Hui-style brick carvings, each artifact connecting five thousand years of civilization in the Jianghuai region. The Chu Ding (a large bronze vessel) is particularly impressive. The guide, Liu Ruya, provides a patient and humorous explanation, enhancing the visit.

This was totally worth it! The cruise was exceptionally long, offering views of almost both banks of the Yangtze River. However, the toll area at the bow was quite expensive; it cost over 300 yuan for one adult and one child! My friend and I, being adults, immediately ran away when we heard that price. Also, if you're going to be taking lots of photos outside the boat, be sure to dress warmly, as the river wind is really strong, especially at night when it gets quite cold. But it's very close to Mixue Ice Cream & Tea, so you can grab a hot drink there when you disembark.

We experienced the grandeur of the Tang Dynasty, with its envoys from all nations paying tribute, the bustling East and West Markets, and the prosperity of the Tang Dynasty. The actors' performances were excellent, and the elderly in my family still remember it fondly. It was lively, fun, and very enjoyable.

Take a bus to the entrance, then hike up and down for a total of 4 hours (less than 4 hours for those in good physical condition; expect double the time for children or the elderly). It is recommended to walk along the waterfall. If you don't want to walk down after reaching the top, take the cable car (because the other side is steep and the scenery is not as good as the waterfall side).

The magic carpet descent and ascent are both easy and not tiring. While the mountain scenery isn't extensive, it's cool and refreshing, with many activities suitable for children to beat the heat. You can stay in Liujia Village and drive to the Qingliangzhai Resort Hotel for a round trip within the scenic area. We walked, a distance of 3 kilometers, which is perfect for those who want some exercise and isn't tiring at all. Liujia Village itself is also worth exploring; it has a beautiful environment and friendly villagers. Staying in Liujia Village offers good value for money and is suitable for those who aren't picky about accommodation standards.

I went on the evening of October 2nd, and it wasn't crowded. We could ride almost any attraction with very little waiting time, one after another. There were many NPCs along the way who you could interact with. I bought a yellow wristband, but it didn't seem very useful; they even try to scare you if you don't wear it.
