Really informative site that gives you a better idea of life in the caves of Matera. While it is possible to see homes like the Casa Grotta di vico Solitario that are furnished and show you what a cave dwelling looked like in the past, the Hypogeum/Ipogeo is more like an underground town. It shows you how structures were interconnected and a few different kinds of underground structures like a mill and a warehouse. You have to use your imagination a bit more as it is unfurnished, but it is fascinating to see. The audio guide is accessible using a QR code and is provides helpful explanations. I see somebody else said they were in and out in 15 minutes but I was there 1/2 an hour and wish I had allowed myself more time (as I had to catch a bus) - I guess it depends on your level of interest and how much time you spend reading/listening to the information available, I found it a very interesting place to explore. The staff member was very friendly and helpful.

Excellent tour, would thoroughly recommend. The tour guide was extremely informative and entertaining, and was obviously very passionate about the history and evolution of his home town. Matera is astonishing - one of a kind, a place not to be missed on any tour of Puglia.

Great, informative tour. We did it in Italian as the English version would’ve been 2x more expensive. My husband doesn’t speak Italian so didn’t understand a word LOL but I translated for him here and there. The guide also recommended a restaurant to us (La grotta del gusto) that I was a bit skeptical about as normally guides are affiliated with these kinds of meh places, but eventually we ate there as they serve traditional dishes and it was amazing too.

The panoramic view of the sassi coming alive with lights on in the evening hours was amazing. Very exciting experience!
