Kruger National Park

4.8/5

Kruger National Park spans Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces in South Africa, covering nearly 20,000 square kilometers, and is one of South Africa's largest game reserves. This area was first protected in 1898 and later officially established as a national park in 1926. The park is home to nearly 150 mammal species and over 500 bird species, and is famous for the free-roaming Big Five—lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and African buffaloes—with a range of wildlife from large herbivores like elephants and giraffes to carnivores such as leopards and cheetahs. The park's diverse vegetation zones create distinct animal habitats. The north is dominated by mopane shrubveld, where elephant herds often forage; the central savanna gathers large numbers of zebras, wildebeests, and antelopes, which also attracts lion prides; the southern riverine areas have dense vegetation, where birds and leopards are more commonly seen. Visitors can choose to self-drive along the park roads or join a guided sunrise or sunset game drive. Animals are more active in the early morning and evening. During the dry season, vegetation is sparse and water sources are concentrated, making it easier to spot elephants, buffaloes, and even lion prides at close range along the roadside. There are multiple camps within the park, and visitors can join night game drives organized by the camps for a chance to spot nocturnal animals.South Africa · Mopani

Blyde River Canyon

Blyde River CanyonLocated in Mpumalanga, South Africa, the canyon was formed by the Blyde River, which has continuously eroded and carved through the Drakensberg mountains over a long period of time. Stretching over 20 km, the steep cliffs and deep valley create a spectacular three-dimensional view. In the early morning, mist often rises slowly between the valley walls, making the canyon appear even deeper and more layered. The Blyde Dam is located at the mouth of the canyon, offering visitors another way to experience it. Visitors can take a boat along the water, looking up at the towering cliffs on both sides from a lower perspective to experience the canyon's depth and scale. In addition to the magnificent rock and water scenery, the interior of the canyon also boasts a rich ecological environment. Dense forests and shrubs provide habitats for antelopes, monkeys, and various bird species, making it a popular area for birdwatchers.Ehlanzeni · >100 km from downtown
Bourke's Luck Potholes

Bourke's Luck Potholes

2 reviews
Bourke's Luck Potholes are located at the confluence of the Blyde River and the Treur River, making them one of the most iconic natural landscapes in the upper reaches of the Blyde River Canyon. The highlight here is not towering peaks, but rather the unique landforms shaped by water and rock over long periods of time. For thousands of years, the combined flow of the two rivers has swirled and eroded the red sandstone riverbed, gradually carving deep, rounded, and massive pits into the rock surface, creating the interconnected natural pothole landscape seen today. Upon entering the scenic area, visitors can walk along the specially constructed viewing trails into the canyon. The trails and footbridges wind along the terrain, connecting several major viewing areas. Multiple suspended viewing platforms are set up along the way, allowing visitors to stand at higher vantage points to overlook the confluence of the rivers and the densely distributed potholes, observing the rock structures formed by long-term water erosion from different angles.Ehlanzeni · 92.1 km from downtown
God’s Window

God’s Window

5.9
God’s WindowLocated on the edge of the Drakensberg Escarpment at the southern end of the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve, it is a prominent alpine viewpoint in the area. It is characterized by a dramatic drop in elevation and expansive views. Looking down from the edge of the cliff, the mountain seems to have been suddenly sliced open, with steep cliffs extending hundreds of meters downward, while below lie vast lowland grasslands and rolling forests. The scenic area features multiple viewing areas at different heights, allowing visitors to enjoy the magnificent natural views from various angles. Standing on the lower viewing deck, you can directly experience the height of the cliff edge and the expansive scenery, which is especially suitable for capturing panoramic shots of the distant valleys, forests, and lowland plains.Ehlanzeni · 68.8 km from downtown

Panorama Route

Panorama Route

3.7
The Panorama Route is a beautiful drive-through scenic route renowned for its natural wonders, spectacular canyons, waterfalls, and viewpoints, making it a popular choice for exploring South Africa's natural beauty and geological features. A particularly striking attraction along the way is the Blyde River Canyon, the world's third-largest canyon, distinguished by its lush tropical vegetation. Further south, a short drive from Graskop, you'll reach the high vantage point of God's Window, offering panoramic views of the vast lowlands on a clear day. Several waterfalls along the route add dynamism and coolness to the journey. Also not to be missed is Bourke's Luck Potholes—at the confluence of the Trull and Blyde Rivers, these unique cylindrical caves, sculpted by the long erosion of the water, are considered a masterpiece of nature's artistry. Trails and bridges offer close-up views of these geological wonders from various angles. This route is not only breathtakingly scenic, but also interwoven with natural and cultural stories, making it an unmissable self-driving experience when visiting Mpumalanga Province.Ehlanzeni · 69.2 km from downtown

I have consistently visited the Kruger National Park and have never been disappointed. Every visit has offered different types of sightings. The rest camps are great. Prepare for losing cell phone signal in certain parts of the park which is honestly a blessing in disguise. Always take some snacks and extra water.

We joined a group tour in South Africa and came to Mpumalanga Province to visit the Blyde River Canyon, one of Africa's natural wonders. The canyon is more than 700 meters deep, more than 20 kilometers long, and more than 1,000 meters above sea level.

This past July I took my girls on a little girls' trip. We’ve not seen each other in 4 years so this trip was much needed. We visited Dullstroom and Graskop where I faced my fear of heights and jumped off the ledge in The Big Swing and swung over the beautiful gorge. It was such a thrilling and freeing feeling. I would definitely do it again. I definitely recommend this activity should you find yourself in Graskop.
