Austrian National Library

4.6/5
204 reviews
As the central academic library of the Republic of Austria, the Austrian National Library has a long history, with its traditions dating back to the 14th century. It serves as a living bridge connecting the rich heritage of the past with the future-oriented needs of the modern information society. The Austrian National Library carries on the legacy of the Habsburg court library, comprising eight departments that preserve a significant portion of the world's documentary heritage and bear the responsibility of continuing to protect these treasures. Its collections of ancient, medieval, and modern manuscripts span diverse cultural fields and hold immense international significance. Additionally, the library houses music manuscripts, early printed books and rare texts, historical maps, portraits and other pictorial documents, posters, bookplates, pamphlets, as well as the equally important literary estates of Austrian writers. Four museums under the library's management showcase to the public the world's unique collection of historical globes, an impressive Esperanto collection, and a comprehensive archive of Austrian literature. Since 2018, the Austrian National Library has also operated the House of Austrian History, a museum dedicated to presenting modern historical events with a particular focus on Austria's history since 1918. The Baroque-style State Hall was built between 1723 and 1726, designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, and is hailed as one of the world's most impressive libraries, regularly hosting special exhibitions. The Austrian National Library aims to open its doors to as wide a readership as possible. To achieve this goal, the library regularly holds exhibitions to raise public awareness of its collections and collaborates with other cultural and educational institutions to organize activities such as reading sessions, book launches, seminars and concerts. Through these activities, the Austrian National Library not only fulfills its statutory educational responsibilities but also demonstrates its unique position as a multicultural education center. All staff at the Austrian National Library are committed to ensuring that all tasks are completed quickly and properly. We always adhere to the service philosophy of professionalism, enthusiasm, and attentiveness in welcoming visitors from around the world. We strive to create an engaging library world for our visitors, where historical heritage, modern architecture, and collections spanning the past and present blend seamlessly with library traditions and modern technology, complementing each other perfectly.Vienna · 73.2 km from Horn

Vienna Operahouse

7.7
4.6/5
297 reviews
The Vienna Operahouse is located next to Vienna's Ringstrasse and is one of the earlier landmark buildings completed along this boulevard. In 1869, it opened its premiere with Mozart's "Don Giovanni," attended by Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth. The theater's performance tradition can be traced back to the 17th-century court opera in the Hofburg Palace. After the imperial era ended, it became state-owned and acquired its current name. This neo-Renaissance-style building was designed by architects Sicardsburg and Van der Nüll, though neither lived to see its completion. The opera house interior has many highlights: the marble-clad foyer and grand staircase are magnificent, the lounge preserves murals painted by artist Moritz von Schwind, and the horseshoe-shaped multi-tiered auditorium with standing room can accommodate over 2,000 spectators. In 1945, the theater caught fire during an air raid, nearly destroying the auditorium and stage, though the foyer, grand staircase, and murals survived. During postwar reconstruction to its original design, extensive wood was used to optimize acoustics, and it reopened in 1955 with Beethoven's "Fidelio." Maher, Richard Strauss, Karajan, Abbado and other masters have conducted here. Some rules established by Maher are still followed today, such as latecomers having to wait until the intermission to enter after the performance begins. The theater still maintains a repertoire rotation system, with dozens of operas and ballets staged in rotation during a performance season, offering almost nightly performances that rarely repeat. The musicians of the Vienna Philharmonic are selected from the theater's orchestra. During the carnival season, the venue transforms into a dance floor for the Vienna Opera Ball. Even without attending a performance, you can join the theater's guided tour, walking from the main staircase to the lounge and auditorium, savoring the architectural and mural details. If you haven't secured a seat in advance but still wish to experience an opera, try the long-standing tradition of standing tickets, which are sold in limited quantity before the show—popular productions may require early arrival to queue. Whichever way you choose to enter, you'll genuinely feel the daily life of this music capital intertwined with opera.Vienna · 73.5 km from Horn

Votive Church

4.5/5
56 reviews
The Votive Church is located next to Vienna's Ringstrasse, facing the main building of the University of Vienna across the street. It is a neo-Gothic Catholic church, often referred to as the Church of Thanksgiving due to its origin as a votive offering. In 1853, Emperor Franz Joseph I survived an assassination attempt when the blade was deflected by his stiff collar during a walk near the old city walls. His brother, Archduke Maximilian, subsequently initiated a fundraising campaign across the empire to build this church in gratitude for the emperor's narrow escape. Construction took over twenty years, and the church was finally completed in 1879 for the silver wedding anniversary of the emperor and Empress Elisabeth. The facade follows a typical Gothic layout: two nearly 100 m high openwork spires stand symmetrically on either side, with a gallery of saints above the three pointed-arch doorways, while rose windows and flying buttresses outline its soaring silhouette. Due to its white stone construction and colorful patterned roof tiles, travelers often mistake it for St. Stephen's Cathedral, though the two buildings are separated by over seven centuries. Inside, notable features include the gilded canopy above the high altar, the hexagonal marble pulpit—bearing a relief portrait of architect Heinrich von Ferstel at its base—and the Renaissance-style sarcophagus of Count Niklas Salm, who defended Vienna during the 1529 Ottoman siege. The open green space in front of the church offers expansive views and is an ideal spot for photographing the twin spires, whose silhouettes stand out distinctly at dusk. This location can be combined with visits to other Ringstrasse landmarks like the University of Vienna main building and City Hall.Vienna · 72.1 km from Horn

Charles Bridge

The Charles Bridge connects the old town and the small town of Prague. It is a landmark building in Prague, and it is also the oldest stone bridge in the city. It is often said that "you have come to Prague by crossing this bridge". Inscribed on the World Heritage List This is a Gothic stone bridge imitating the Roman Angel Bridge, and it is the only way for the coronation procession of the kings of the past dynasties. In 1992, the Charles Bridge was included in the World Heritage List. When it was first built, its name was "Stone Bridge". It is said that egg yolks are also mixed into the raw mortar for reinforcement. The open-air Baroque Statue Museum Charles Bridge is 516 meters long and has a particularly wide deck. The bridge is known as "Europe's open-air Baroque sculpture gallery". There are various sculptures and reliefs decorated on both sides of the bridge. There are a total of 30 saint sculptures, all of which are masterpieces from Czech masters of the 17th and 18th centuries. It is said that behind each statue there is a touching historical story. Statue of St. John Among the many statues on the Charles Bridge, the statue of St. John is the more famous one and is considered to be the "official" guardian of the Charles Bridge. St. John, a cardinal, offended the king because of the political and religious struggle, and was sentenced to death and thrown into the river. A golden cross is engraved in the middle of the fence, where St. John was thrown from the bridge. Touch the statue and pray for happiness It is said that as long as you touch the statue of Charles Bridge with your heart, you will get a lifetime of happiness. Many bronze reliefs become very bright because too many people touch them. Most of the sculptures on the bridge have now been replaced by replicas, while the originals are kept in Prague's museums. Street artists on the bridge In addition to various statues, the street artists on the bridge are also a unique landscape. There are art painting booths on both sides of the bridge, and many street painters paint on the spot, and most of the themes are taken from the Charles Bridge. In addition, there are some artistic workers who perform with musical instruments, bringing infinite vitality to the Charles Bridge. The bridge tower overlooks the beauty of Prague There are two bridge towers at both ends of the Charles Bridge - the Old Town Bridge Tower and the Small Town Bridge Tower. You can climb the bridge tower and overlook the Charles Bridge and the city of Prague, which is even more beautiful when the sun sets in the evening.Czech Republic · Prague

Old Town Square

No "wishing pool" yet still stunning "I stood in the Old Town Square at dusk in Prague, casting hope into the wishing well..." You must have heard Jolin Tsai's "Prague Square," a song depicting the Old Town Square surrounded by medieval architecture. However, the reality is there is no "wishing well" mentioned in the lyrics, but the fairy-tale atmosphere here is enchanting enough. The Old Town Square was built approx. 900 years ago and is a historically renowned square in Prague, located between Wenceslas Square and Charles Bridge. It is also the heart of the city, bustling with crowds every summer. Public square highlights At the center of the square stands a statue of Jan Hus built in 1915, erected to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of the Charles University rector. The surrounding buildings showcase diverse architectural styles, ranging from Gothic masterpieces like the Church of Our Lady before Týn to Baroque gems such as St. Nicholas Church. A major attraction for visitors is the Prague astronomical clock on the Old Town Hall facade. On the hour, the clock chimes as windows above it open, revealing a procession of 12 apostle figures that bow to the crowd. If interested, you can also climb the tower of the old town hall to overlook the panoramic view of the old town. The roofs in the city are almost all painted red, while the slightly protruding spires of clock towers and churches are green. They are scattered yet orderly throughout the city, and the vivid colors give Prague a fairy-tale charm. Public square activity The old town square is not only a popular tourist destination but also frequently used for new year celebrations, holiday markets (Christmas and Easter) and rally activities. On ordinary days, there are many street performers in the square, and many local youth come here to take wedding photos. The square is surrounded by many cafes. If you're tired from exploring, you can order a coffee at an outdoor cafe, and don't miss the grilled sausages and ice cream. Enjoying the music and dance performances on the square is truly refreshing. The alleys around the square are lined with small shops selling various art goods—if you like them, you can buy some as souvenirs.Czech Republic · Prague

The moment you step into the circular hall, the crystal chandeliers and marble columns transport you back to the Habsburg era. The resident orchestra perfectly balanced the warmth of the strings and the brilliance of the brass in the overture, and the conductor's masterful control of tempo made "The Flames of Revenge" both dramatic and classically refined. The performance was professional, powerful, and absolutely fantastic!

#St. Stephen's Basilica | A Sacred Place You Can't Miss in Budapest ⛪️ The most moving stop on any trip to Budapest is St. Stephen's Basilica. This basilica, which took 54 years to complete, boasts a 96-meter-high dome, the same height as the Parliament Building, symbolizing the balance between faith and secular life. Stepping into the basilica, you're greeted by gilded murals and exquisite marble sculptures. Sunlight streams gently through the stained-glass windows, creating a serene and solemn atmosphere. The basilica houses Hungary's national treasure—the Holy Right Hand of St. Stephen, the founding king, a relic spanning a millennium, silently narrating the origins and history of the nation. Be sure to buy a ticket to ascend the dome observation deck for a 360° panoramic view of the entire city. The Danube River meanders through the landscape, and the Chain Bridge, the Parliament Building, and the sea of red rooftops are all within sight. Climbing to the top at sunset, with the entire city bathed in the glow of the setting sun, is a uniquely romantic experience in Budapest. The spacious square in front of the basilica is very pleasant; after a long day of exploring, you can sit at a street-side café and quietly admire this magnificent building. If you're lucky, you can also attend a world-class organ concert and immerse yourself in the city's unique artistic charm. When you come to Budapest, don't just rush through; step inside St. Stephen's Basilica and understand the city's faith and gentleness. #HungaryTravel #BudapestCheckIn

Charles Bridge is one of the most famous landmarks in Prague and a wonderful place to visit. The historic stone bridge is full of beautiful statues and offers amazing views of the Vltava River, Prague Castle, and the city’s old buildings. I enjoyed walking across the bridge, watching local artists, musicians, and street performers, which created a lively atmosphere. The bridge is especially beautiful during sunrise and sunset when the light makes the scenery even more impressive. It is also a great place to take photos and enjoy the city’s history. Overall, Charles Bridge is a must-visit attraction that combines history, culture, and beautiful views, making it one of the highlights of any trip to Prague.

Prague's Old Town Square doesn't have a wishing well, but when the Astronomical Clock strikes the hour, the twelve apostles' figures emerge from the windows, always drawing a large crowd. The spires of the Church of Our Lady before Týn are a dark gray, like two flames. Pigeons perch on the Jan Hus statue in the center of the square year-round. Turning into the alleyways, you can buy cinnamon rolls, piping hot and sprinkled with powdered sugar. In the evening, as the lights come on, the sound of horse-drawn carriages crunching on the cobblestones is crisp and clear; sitting in an open-air seat watching people come and go is quite relaxing.
