Komine Castle, though small in size, is surrounded by stunning scenery. The white walls and black tiles of the three-tiered turrets, combined with stone walls and expansive lawns, create incredibly photogenic spots on a clear day. When we visited, the blue sky and white clouds made even casual snapshots evoke the feel of a traditional Japanese castle.
Although the outer castle and museum are still under construction, it's possible to visit the interior of the three-tiered turrets. While the exterior is exquisite, the interior is a completely different experience. Exposed wooden beams and pillars, steep wooden staircases, and a relatively cramped space offer a clear view of the traditional wooden structure.
There weren't many tourists, creating a comfortable space between the lawns and the castle walls, perfect for leisurely strolls and photography. While it can't compare to grand castles like Himeji Castle, I think it's worth stopping for an hour or two if you're traveling the Tohoku Main Line through Shirakawa.
