Izu Peninsula

Izu Peninsula is a peninsula formed by volcanic activity. Two of the world's rare volcanic arcs converge here, creating a diverse landscape interwoven with hot springs, volcanic rock coasts, and mountain valleys. The peninsula is surrounded by the sea on three sides, offering a rich variety of scenery, from rugged coastlines to the dense forests and deep valleys of the Amagi Mountains. Hot springs are Izu's signature attraction. Shuzenji Onsen is said to have been established over 1,000 years ago and is a historic hot spring town on the peninsula. The hot spring street is built along the Katsura River, featuring the serene and deep Bamboo Forest Path, with Tokko-no-yu resting quietly in between. Atami and Ito on the east coast offer a different vacation atmosphere, where hotels stand by the sea, allowing you to enjoy ocean views while soaking in the hot springs. Traces of volcanic activity can be found all over the peninsula. Jogasaki Coast is a volcanic rock coast formed after lava from the eruption of Mt. Omuro approx. 4,000 years ago flowed into the sea, cooled, and was eroded by waves over many years. It spans approx. 9 km, and the Kadowaki Suspension Bridge hangs over the cliffs. Mt. Omuro itself is a perfectly round volcanic cone, and you can see a panoramic view of Izu from the summit. Dogashima on the west coast is famous for its sea caves; when you take a boat into Tensodo Cave, light pours down from the gap in the ceiling onto the water, creating a blue glow. Seafood is also a major feature of Izu. Being surrounded by the sea on three sides makes the local seafood exceptionally fresh. Splendid alfonsino is a representative local fish species, commonly found in hot spring hotels and coastal restaurants.Izu City · 19.2 km from Ito

Mt. Omuro is located in the Izu Highlands and was formed by volcanic eruptions. Its perfectly round, symmetrical silhouette makes it a recognizable local landmark, often described as looking like an overturned bowl. At the center of the summit is a bowl-shaped crater with a circular trail along the rim. The interior of the crater is a gentle grassy slope that has long featured an archery range, and a Sengen Shrine is built on the east side. To protect the mountain's vegetation, visitors must take a chairlift to the summit. The summit offers expansive views. On clear days, you can see Mount Fuji, the Hakone mountains, the Amagi mountain range, and the Izu Islands in the sea, making it a great spot to overlook the surrounding scenery. Due to the long-standing tradition of burning the mountain to clear weeds, the slopes are free of trees and covered only by neat grass. The unique natural landscape and expansive views offer visitors a unique high-altitude sightseeing and walking experience.Ito · 6.9 km from downtown

Jogasaki Coast is a coastal landscape formed when lava from the eruption of Mt. Omuro flowed into the sea, cooled, and was subsequently eroded by waves. Jagged black lava cliffs stand along the sea, topped with dense forests. Waves crash against the rocks, and the contrast between the black volcanic rock and the lush trees makes this a representative natural coastal view of the area. A famous experience along the coast is the Kadowaki Suspension Bridge, which is suspended between cliffs. Looking down, you can see waves churning in the crevices of the rocks; the nearby Kadowaki Lighthouse has an observation deck where, on clear days, you can look out over the sea and see the silhouettes of the Izu Islands and theAmagi Mountains. Comfortable hiking trails have been built along the route, making it easy for visitors to stroll and enjoy the scenery. Hydrangeas in early summer, daylilies in midsummer, and seaside chrysanthemums in autumn bloom in turn along the coast, offering scenery to enjoy throughout the seasons.Ito · 9 km from downtown

Izu is known as the town of hot springs and has a thousand-year hot spring culture. Kuroneiwa Hot Spring is a wild open-air hot spring facing the sea in Izu Kitagawa. It is said that fishermen discovered that the rocks were not covered with seaweed, so they discovered hot springs around it. "When you soak in the hot spring, you can see the Pacific Ocean from a zero angle." This is the special feature of Kurogen Rock Hot Spring. Toi Hot Spring is the oldest hot spring in Nishi-Izu. It is a very representative hot spring in the area and has a very early history. Around 1611, when locals were developing Toi Kaneyama, they discovered the hot spring gushing from the pit in Anraku Temple. , the locals call it MABU. Moreover, there is an open-air hot spring on the spacious balcony, and there are deck chairs next to the hot spring. Visitors can enjoy the hot spring while overlooking Suruga Bay, Mount Fuji, etc.Japan · Izu City

I really like the scenery, quietness and hot springs of the Izu Peninsula, and of course the restaurants with pure Japanese menus. Although it is a bit embarrassing, it is super exciting; I look forward to visiting in three weeks.

The cactus zoo at the foot of Mount Omuro is incredibly soothing. Over a thousand different cacti of varying shapes and sizes grow in the greenhouse, creating a spectacular sight. Most of the animals roam freely, and the most endearing are the Kapibala, who relax in the hot springs with a gentle and docile demeanor. You can even hand-feed the red pandas and alpacas. This unique blend of flora and fauna is gentle and healing, making it an unforgettable and tender memory of your trip to Izu.

It’s really nice to come to Mount Omuro when the weather is nice. It takes just a few minutes to reach the top of the mountain by cable car, and you can see endless scenery as far as the eye can see. If you have time, you can also go to the shrine or go to the archery range at the bottom of the valley. There are souvenir shops at the bottom of the mountain and Shizuoka Prefecture’s famous Wasabi ice cream.

It's a free attraction, and the entire hike offers unique sea views, which is quite fun. The highlight was that after starting the walk from the lighthouse, I got to eat incredibly delicious Ise lobster tempura soba noodles!!! It was the perfect ending to the whole trip!

Close to Tokyo.. 40 minutes by Shinkansen from Shinagawa, and budget travelers can also take the local train. Don't miss the fireworks like the one in the picture twice a month. The clean hot spring water is also the best 👍 A good ryokan nearby.. A place with a market and a mart.. A must visit again 👍
