The Meteora Monastery is one of the most spectacular buildings in the area and has been listed as a World Natural Heritage Site. It was built in the 14th century on a higher rocky hill in the valley at an altitude of 613 meters. The unique church is built on a high cliff, as if floating in the air, as if it makes people feel like they are in a pure land isolated from the world. The architectural pattern of the Meteora monastery reflects the status of the main monastery. There is a room where the skulls of the deceased monks are displayed, and the clothes worn by the early monks are also collected. There is a group of frescoes "Martydom of Saints" in the monastery.Meteora · 1.2 km from Kastraki

Vallam Monastery is the larger monastery of Meteora. It is located on a cliff at an altitude of 595 meters. It was named after Varlaam, an ascetic who built three churches here in 1350. The current monastery was built by the Apsarades brothers, wealthy children from northwest Greece. The monastery's dining room is now a museum with manuscripts from the 11th-16th centuries and ancient icons. Because of the dangerous terrain, the monastery has preserved the culture and traditions of ancient Greece and smashed the invasion of Islam.Meteora · 1.4 km from Kastraki

Compared with other monasteries, the Holy Trinity Monastery is located in a remote location, and the interior is relatively simple, but there are more tourists. The religious murals in it are also the denser among the several nearby monasteries. This is also the filming location of the 007 movie "For Your Eyes Only".Meteora · 1.5 km from Kastraki
Holy Monastery of the Great Meteoron - Transfiguration of the Saviour

Holy Monastery of the Great Meteoron - Transfiguration of the Saviour

4
Holy Monastery of the Great Meteoron - Transfiguration of the Saviour is located atop the towering rock formations of Meteora in the Thessaly region of Greece and is an important, historic Eastern Orthodox monastery in the area. The monastery was founded in the mid-14th century by Saint Athanasios of Meteora, later expanded during the time of King Joasaph, and further developed in the 16th century. It houses a rich collection of religious art and historical artifacts, including exquisite frescoes, icons, manuscripts, and other precious items from the Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods, some of which can be viewed in the monastery museum. Built upon steep rock peaks, the monastery has long integrated with its unique natural surroundings, reflecting the long-standing monastic traditions of the Greek Orthodox Church while carrying significant historical and cultural value. Today, the monastery remains a functioning religious site while also being open to tourists and pilgrims, offering visitors the opportunity to learn about the history of local monasticism and Orthodox artistic traditions.Meteora · 1.3 km from Kastraki

The monastery is a women's monastery, built on the edge of a very steep cliff, and its structure is ingenious. It is decorated with beautiful stained glass, as well as frescoes of "Christ Resurrection" and "Appearance". From every angle, it is a different look, and the view overlooking the entire valley from here is also very beautiful.Meteora · 1.3 km from Kastraki

Since the 5th century AD, monks have come to the mountains to practice. After hundreds and thousands of years of unremitting efforts, there were more than 20 monasteries in Meteora. With the hardships of the years, only six remain.
