Approx. 120,000 cultural artifacts, including national treasures and important cultural heritage Tokyo National Museum was established in the Meiji era and is a historic national museum in Japan. Tokyo National Museum makes full use of its top-ranking collection in Japan, changing exhibits approx. 300 times a year. The exhibits are refreshed almost every week, so you'll discover something new with each visit. Display cultural heritage from various Asian regions centered around Japan. Go see the artwork you've seen in textbooks! The exhibition halls of the Tokyo National Museum are divided into six venues: the main building, the Heiseikan, the Asian gallery, the Horyuji treasures gallery, the Hyokeikan, and the Kuroda memorial hall. The first floor of the main building consists of displays and special exhibitions in various fields such as sculpture, ceramics, and swords, while the second floor showcases an overview of Japanese art from the Jomon period to the Edo period. The Japanese archaeological artifacts exhibition room (first floor) of the Heiseikan displays archaeological remains from the Paleolithic period to the Edo period, where visitors can see artifacts like Jomon-era clay figurines and Yayoi-era bronze bells that are familiar from textbooks. The Asian gallery saves and exhibits art, crafts, and archaeological remains from various Asian countries; the Horyuji treasures gallery saves and displays over 300 treasures donated to the imperial family by the Horyuji temple in Nara. The Kuroda memorial hall is a building constructed according to the will of modern Japanese painter Kuroda Seiki, where his works are exhibited and made public.Tokyo · 34.8 km from Kawagoe

Kita-in is located in Kosenba Town, Kawagoe. It was built in 830 and is the regional main temple of the Tendai School of Buddhism. From the 16th to the 17th century, Kita-in was represented by Tenkai Monk (Master of Kindness), who had an extraordinary personality and was an important advisor to the three chief generals of the Tokugawa shogunate: Tokugawa Ieyasu, Hidetada and Iemitsu. It is said that Monk Tianhai is 108 years old. In 1638, Kita-in was destroyed by fire, so Tokugawa Iemitsu ordered the temple to be rebuilt, and some buildings were donated from Edo Castle. Including a room that is said to be the birthplace of Iamitsu, which can still be visited today. The Toshogu Shrine, which is within the confines of a spacious temple, is a place where rituals are held during the re-burial of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The Five Hundred Arhats of Kita-in are one of the three largest in Japan, and there are actually 538 stone statues here, each with its own facial expression. It is also a pleasure to take a closer look at all the statues.Kawagoe · 889m from downtown

Tokyo Tower, also known as the Tokyo Iron Tower, is a popular sightseeing spot in Tokyo. It is a radio tower located in Shiba Park, Tokyo, Japan. The red-and-white latticed tower was modeled on the Eiffel Tower in Paris and stands 333 meters tall. Since its completion in 1958, it has remained one of Tokyo's city landmarks, and its image and name have frequently appeared in various works of art. In recent years, as the public's expectations for scenery have risen, the tower is no longer subject to color restrictions, but its original paintwork is so distinctive that it has been kept as it is. The lighting was designed and supervised by the world-renowned lighting designer Motoko Ishii, and the lights are on from sunset to midnight. The color of the lights changes with the seasons: white in summer, and orange in spring, autumn, and winter. Tokyo Tower offers a rich array of sightseeing services. In addition to its bright, transparent observation platforms, it also has leisure and entertainment facilities such as a museum, restaurants, and shops, making a stroll here a thoroughly pleasant choice. Around Tokyo Tower, specks of light sparkle like diamonds. This lighting system can change the color of the lights into as many as seven colors, and each color carries a message. The main observation decks inside the tower are the Grand Observation Deck and the Special Observation Deck, where, on a clear day, you may also catch a glimpse of the beautiful scenery of Mount Fuji. △[Grand Observation Deck] Located at a height of 150 meters, it is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows on all sides. △The Grand Observation Deck also features several "Skywalk Windows" with glass floors, offering a direct view down to the ground and providing a thrilling experience. △The Special Observation Deck is a viewing area open only to visitors with advance reservations. It boasts a futuristic design with dazzling mirrored installations throughout. The tour is buided commentary by a professional guide whose warm and friendly service and detailed buided commentary will give you a comprehensive understanding of Tokyo Tower's past and future.Tokyo · 37.8 km from Kawagoe

MOOMIN VALLEY PARKThis is a very important attraction in Hanno. Step into the Nordic wonderland deep in Saitama Forest, where Moomin Valley outlines a fairy-tale dimension with its rounded curves. The Moomin House stands among white birch trees, its cloud-like blue roof wafting the aroma of cinnamon rolls. Push open the round wooden door to find fluffy Moomintroll reading letters by the fireplace. Follow the wooden boardwalk to the Elf Theater, where life-sized Little My and Snufkin perform shadow puppet shows, with Finnish nursery rhymes blending surprisingly harmoniously with Japanese subtitles. Children can crawl into the treehouse-shaped picture book gallery and touch glowing 3D pages in the acrylic "Firefly Forest." Don't forget to grab a cup of lingonberry juice at Moominmamma's Kitchen while watching the changing seasons through the floor-to-ceiling windows—wild berries dotting mossy grounds in spring, maple-red hues soaking the valley in fall, and the rustling of pine needles as if an invisible hand were gently turning the parchment pages of a fairy-tale book.Hanno · 15.5 km from Kawagoe

Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is a large park located in the city center, featuring Japanese and French garden landscapes. The park features lush forests, beautiful views, and 1,500 cherry trees, attracting a large number of visitors to enjoy the cherry blossoms in spring. The birth of Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden can be traced back to Meiji 39 (1906), located on the former site of the residence of the Naito family, lords of Takato Domain in Shinshu during the Edo period. Originally built as an imperial garden, it became a national park after the war and is beloved by many. The park covers an area of 58.3 hectares, with a perimeter of 3.5 kilometers, and features unique garden views such as beautiful plane tree avenues.Tokyo · 33.5 km from Kawagoe

Ghibli Museum

4.7/5

Ghibli Museum is an animation-themed museum personally designed by Hayao Miyazaki. The European-style building is entwined with trees and vines, and the "forest" in its name comes from this environment surrounded by woods. The museum invites visitors to "let's get lost together" and does not have a fixed route. It takes approx. 15 minutes to walk from Mitaka Station, and a community bus is also available for round-trip travel; you can also stroll through the park along the way. A fluffy Totoro stands in the ticket booth at the entrance, but it is only there to "welcome guests." The permanent exhibition, which recreates the studio's creative workspace, is piled with numerous reference manuscripts and hand-drawn books ranging from airplanes and ships to street scenes and characters. The interactive exhibition area uses rotating devices to demonstrate how images "come to life," explaining animation principles in an intuitive and engaging way. The "Saturn Theater" screening room loops original Ghibli short films that are only shown in the museum and never released elsewhere, with each visitor limited to one screening. The "Catbus" room, where children can crawl into its fluffy belly and roll around, is also only open to children. The adjacent reading room is filled with picture books, and there is also a special exhibition hall with themes that change regularly. You can take photos once you step outside. Climb the spiral staircase tower to the rooftop garden, where a robot soldier from "Castle in the Sky" taller than a person stands in the bushes, next to a stone tablet engraved with Laputa characters. If you look carefully in the courtyard, you will also encounter familiar figures such as the black cat from "Kiki's Delivery Service" crouching by the faucet and the pilot from "Porco Rosso," like a treasure hunt hidden in the architectural details. The souvenir shop "Mamma Aiuto" is named after the air pirate gang in "Porco Rosso." The shelves are stocked with everything from Totoro plushies and puzzles to umbrellas printed with animation scenes, many of which are limited-edition items sold only here. The "Straw Hat Cafe," with its orange walls and red windows, serves freshly made hot dogs, sandwiches, and dessert drinks. The whole tour feels more like walking into a Hayao Miyazaki animation than a conventional art museum.Mitaka · 26.6 km from Kawagoe

Booking my ticket for the Tokyo National Museum on Trip.com was fast and easy. I received the e-ticket immediately on my phone, which let me skip the long ticket counter line at the entrance. Scanning the QR code at the gate took only a few seconds. As a solo visitor, exploring the museum was completely stress-free. The location inside Ueno Park is very easy to reach from Ueno Station. Inside the galleries, the signs and maps are clearly marked in English. There are also convenient coin lockers near the entrance to store your bags, making walking around comfortable.

I went on Saturday, and it was quite crowded. Once inside, you had to scan a QR code to get a photo opportunity with the characters, and that was only available for the afternoon. The boat parade pass was also only available for single people. It's an indoor amusement park, so there aren't many attractions. There are shows to watch, and you can eat various character-themed foods, which are very cute. There are also shops, Ichiban Kuji (a type of prize), claw machines, gashapon (capsule toys), etc.

Upon arrival, I was struck by the simple and unpretentious environment, but after settling in, I discovered its subtle charm. There was no deliberate attempt at luxury; the plain walls were warmed by the sunlight, and the colorful paintings at the corners shimmered with soft hues, like a corner of the evening glow captured in the room. The floors were made of old wood, making no harsh sounds underfoot. The staff spoke softly, and even the tea served was lukewarm. Without any unnecessary noise, sitting in a chair by the window and daydreaming, time seemed to slow down. It felt as if I had stepped into a secluded mountain retreat from an ancient painting, my heart gradually calming down, and I almost forgot my return date.

After walking a few steps out of the nearby hotel, I came across Kumano Shrine. I had planned to visit it before but gave up because I would miss the business hours. As a result, you can visit the shrine freely at night, and you can complete a series of actions such as money laundering and fortune-making! And it feels great when the lanterns are lit at night! It takes about 15 minutes to walk from Kawagoe Station~

Visiting the **Ghibli Museum** was a truly magical experience. It showcases the artistry behind animation, highlighting how Ghibli, a pioneer in the field, created beautiful films without modern computers. Seeing the meticulous process of hand-drawing and painting each frame was awe-inspiring.The museum's architecture and interior perfectly capture the whimsical and mysterious essence of the Ghibli world. While photography isn't allowed, this enhances the experience, urging fans to immerse themselves fully in the magic of the exhibits. Each entry ticket resembles a film strip from the animations, making it a beautiful keepsake of the visit. It’s no surprise that the Ghibli Museum remains a favorite among locals and tourists, with tickets often being hard to come by. Overall, my visit was unforgettable and a must-see for any Ghibli fan!
