Kirkenes Church
Kirkenes Church is the parish church of the town of Kirkenes in northern Norway, situated on a small hill overlooking the bay. The original church, built in 1862, was a wooden octagonal structure that was destroyed during heavy bombing in 1944 during World War II. The current church was designed by architect Sofus Haugen. Construction began in 1957, and it was consecrated in 1959. It features white concrete and a slate roof, blending a traditional three-aisled basilica structure with the post-war reconstruction style of Northern Norway. The tower rises vertically from the choir area, creating a distinctive design. The interior preserves the original spire that survived from the old church, displayed as a testament to its history.
