Every winter, a large flock of red-billed gulls migrate here from Siberia, making it a good place for bird watching and bird feeding. There are different ways to explore Dianchi lake. You can stroll around the lake, cycle, or ride a boat. You can also climb up to the Dragon Gate overlooking Dianchi Lake to get a better view of the entire lake.Kunming · 23.7 km from downtown

Stone Forest Scenic Area

8.7
4.7/5
18.8k reviews
The Stone Forest Scenic Area is located in Shilin County, Kunming, and is one of the key attractions in the city. This scenic area showcases typical karst landforms, featuring stone peaks, pinnacles, sinkholes, and underground rivers. The towering rock formations take on various shapes—sword-like, pagoda-like, mushroom-like, and more—creating a breathtaking and fantastical landscape. The Stone Forest Scenic Area is divided into several widely spaced sections, with the Greater and Lesser Stone Forest attractions at its core. The Naigu Stone Forest is located approx. 12 km north of the main attractions, while the Dadie Waterfall scenic area sits approx. 29 km southwest. The Changhu Lake area is positioned 26 km southeast of the main site. When visitors refer to touring the Stone Forest, they typically mean exploring the Greater and Lesser Stone Forest sections. The Greater and Lesser Shilin are located in the same area. After purchasing tickets at the main entrance and walking along the path for 20 minutes, you'll find the smaller and more gently sloped Lesser Shilin Scenic Area on your left. Amidst the dense cluster of peaks stands the famous Ashima Stone, where the majestic karst formations resemble a graceful Yi ethnic maiden named Ashima, seemingly waving to visitors—a favorite photo spot for travelers. Beyond the striking Ashima, the Lesser Shilin area features other captivating views like the Steed and Pillar Supporting the Sky, each with unique shapes. This is where your imagination is put to the test. If you find your imagination lacking, we recommend hiring a guide who can offer fresh perspectives on these remarkable formations. As you drive leisurely along the highway, you'll encounter a series of remarkable rock formations lining the roadside—the Tang Monk Stone, Stone Prison, Phoenix Combing Its Wings, and Lingzhi Mushroom Rock—each vividly lifelike and exquisitely crafted by nature's artistry, presenting their unique postures to showcase Earth's wondrous creations. Strolling along the pathway, you'll unexpectedly arrive at the Great Stone Forest Scenic Area. After marveling at wonders like "Two Birds Sharing Food," "Rhinoceros Gazing at the Moon," "Lotus Peak," "Shilin Grand View," and "Stone Screen," you might feel slightly fatigued. Take a peaceful break at Lion Pavilion while admiring the inverted peaks reflected in Lion Pool across the way. After prolonged exposure to these karst formations, visual fatigue may set in—making it the perfect moment to shift perspectives. Board a cruise on Shilin Lake, where mountain vistas and water scenery converge into one breathtaking panorama, dissolving all stress and worries. If you prefer not to walk, electric carts driven by Yi ethnic women shuttle between attractions and stop upon request. You can still marvel at the wonders of the Stone Forest Scenic Area, and some friendly drivers may even share interesting local anecdotes along the way. Naigu Stone Forest, also known as New Stone Forest or Mozhai Stone Forest, is located 13 km north of the Stone Forest Scenic Area. It features a landscape composed of stone formations, Baiyun Lake, Shifeng Mountain, and Yougu Xianpu Waterfall. Compared to the Stone Forest Scenic Area, this site offers a distinct style. The towering gray-black stone pillars here are densely packed, resembling castles, towers, and mushrooms. The rugged, primitive rock formations surge skyward like waves, creating a majestic atmosphere. Walking through these dark peaks feels like stepping into a primeval world.Shilin · 6.1 km from downtown

Yunnan Provincial Museum

4.8/5
2.1k reviews
The Yunnan Provincial Museum is a comprehensive museum showcasing Yunnan's history and ethnic culture, housing over 200,000 cultural relics (sets), with strengths in ancient Dian Kingdom bronzeware, Nanzhao and Dali Kingdom Buddhist statues, and historical calligraphy and paintings. The building itself is distinctive: its reddish-brown exterior is composed of irregular stone prism shapes, resembling a stone forest rising from the ground, making it memorable even before entering the exhibition halls. The permanent exhibition follows a chronological sequence, with six themed halls—"Ancient Yunnan," "Dawn of civilization," "Dominance in southern China," "Land of fragrant Buddhism," "Frontier expansion and defense," and "A century of upheaval"—taking visitors from prehistoric times to the modern era, offering a condensed overview of Yunnan's history. Located in a multi-ethnic border region, the artifacts here differ markedly from those in inland museums: bronzeware depicts vivid scenes of animal combat, rituals, and warfare, while the Dian Kingdom's unique shell containers resemble lidded bronze "piggy banks." The Buddhist statues bear the distinct regional style of the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms, warranting closer attention. The museum's crown jewels deserve dedicated viewing time: the Warring States period bronze ox-tiger table, unearthed from the Lijiashan tombs in Jiangchuan, features a small ox hidden beneath a large ox and a fierce tiger biting the ox's tail, earning the saying "In the north, there's the galloping horse treading on a flying swallow; in the south, there's the ox-tiger bronze table." The Dali Kingdom gilded Avalokitesvara statue with silver halo from the Qianxun Pagoda of Chongsheng Temple in Dali has a unique golden form. Other treasures include Song Dynasty Guo Xi's "Travelers among mountains and streams," Yuan Dynasty Huang Gongwang's "Visiting Dai in Shanxi," and the Ming Dynasty gem-inlaid golden crown. After the visit, you can stop by the nearby Guandu ancient town, making it possible to explore both sites in a day.Kunming · 10.3 km from downtown

Yunnan Wildlife Park is located in the northeast of Kunming City, covering an area of 2800 acres. It is the first new type of tourist attraction in Yunnan Province that focuses on wildlife conservation research, tourism observation, and popular science education. The mountains in the park are undulating and the trees are lush. Based on the abundant natural resources in Yunnan and central Yunnan, we simulate the original ecological landscape and create an open space environment. In more than 10 exhibition areas with rich content and unique structure, we implement natural release and mixed breeding of wild animals, showcasing a natural, primitive, wild and simple style. The exhibition area is mainly divided into rare animal area, African tribes, Sky City, Swan Lake, herbivorous animal release area, Giant Panda Pavilion, Giant Bird Forest, Lion and Tiger Mountain, Peacock Garden, and Cute Pet Area. The display of animals mainly focuses on species from Yunnan and Southwest China. While highlighting the unique animals of Yunnan, rare species from Africa, America, Australia, Asia and other places are introduced, creating a "Wildlife World" consisting of more than 100 species and over 10000 wild animals. The hundreds of steps along the way, as well as the reliefs, stone carvings, and caves visible throughout the route, were all meticulously crafted by Qing Dynasty artisans using primitive tools. The Datian Pavilion is the highest point of the Dragon Gate, featuring a dedicated viewing platform where visitors can overlook the vast 500-li Dianchi Lake. If there are Kuanzhai Alleys in Chengdu and Xintiandi in Shanghai, then there is Kunming Old Street in Kunming. Kunming Old Street is a rare block project in China that takes the entire block as a unified place name. Among the buildings in Kunming Old Street, the older ones have a history of nearly 900 years. These buildings carry too many memories and stories of the city, and at the same time carry too many childhood joys and current life interests of contemporary people. Guanghua Street, Kunming Old Street, starts from Zhengyi Road in the east and ends at Wuyi Road in the west, with a total length of 435 meters. In today's Guanghua Street, you can eat authentic rice noodles in a small pot, you can find bizarre Yunnan antiques, and you can find a hundred-year-old pharmacy. Guanghua Street embraces the past and present of Kunming with his mottled and simple mind. As early as 1983, Yongdao Street, Kunming Old Street, had an earlier flower and bird market in Kunming. With the passage of time, the iron sheds were built on Yongdao Street, and after the merchants selling flowers, birds, fish and insects made a lot of money, they expanded one after another, and successively formed the Jingxing Jewelry Flower and Bird Market. In addition, these small businesses that represent the characteristics of the urban market even extend to Guanghua Street and Wenming Street.Kunming · 731m from downtown

The Haigeng Dam is right next to Dianchi Lake, and you can see the Dianchi Lake at the foot of the Xishan Mountain, and the scenery is very good. It is a good choice to come here to watch seagulls. The season of watching seagulls is very spectacular. There are many seagulls. You can spend two yuan to buy a package of bird food. When you stretch out your hand, the seagulls will come down to eat, which is very interesting. The dam is very wide and long, and parking is also very convenient. Many newcomers come here to take pictures. The wind on the dam is very strong, and the wind blowing from Dianchi Lake is very comfortable in summer. Remember to wear more clothes in winter, it is colder.Kunming · 8.9 km from downtown

Location: Haigeng Park/No. 16 Hubin Road ↔ Xishan Longmen (West Mountain Dragon Gate), not near the old street, you have to go to the Dianchi Lake area. Experience: Crossing the lake + climbing the mountain, about 20 minutes one way, views of Dianchi Lake, Sleeping Beauty Mountain, and city scenery, great for taking photos. Ticket Price: One way about 59-60 RMB, round trip about 98-100 RMB. Advantages: Easy for lazy people to climb West Mountain, no climbing required, unique views; seagulls in winter. Disadvantages: Stops during strong winds/thunderstorms; long queues during peak season; separate ticket/walking required for Longmen after climbing the mountain; don't confuse with the "Xishan Longmen Cableway". Conclusion: First time in Kunming, taking the Dianchi-Xishan route → worth it; if just exploring the old street → not worth a special trip.

Overall, I recommend visiting Kunming. I originally planned to go for the nighttime activities, but after having dinner near the entrance it was already past 8 PM, and the park staff advised against going in. So we entered the park at 11 AM the next morning. Because I had a child with me, we didn't plan to spend too much time there, so we didn't hire a guide. We regretted it a bit after entering, but finding a guide later was difficult. I recommend hiring a guide upon entry; it costs 200 yuan for 3 hours. It allows you to learn about the various ethnic cultures and customs, and also helps you avoid missing some villages and performances while exploring on your own.

I highly recommend Ms. Zhang Jinxiu from the Yunnan Provincial Museum! I was fortunate to have Ms. Zhang give a guided tour today, and the experience exceeded my expectations. She has a solid foundation in Yunnan's history and is very familiar with its historical context. She explained the stories behind the museum's prized artifacts, such as the Bronze Ox and Tiger Case, in a vivid and easy-to-understand way, with clear logic and a captivating delivery. Her explanations were patient and composed, answering every question. She was never dry or simply reading from a textbook, bringing the dormant artifacts to life. My trip to the Yunnan Provincial Museum was incredibly rewarding, and I sincerely thank Ms. Zhang Jinxiu!

Animal interactions within the park are charged separately, and it depends on the individual… some are a bit pricey, others are okay. But it's still fun, kids have a great time, and you'd need at least 4 hours to experience everything at a leisurely pace. The sightseeing bus system is well-designed.

It's definitely worth taking children and the elderly, as it saves a lot of energy. The Haigeng Dam and the Ethnic Village are nearby. I was lucky to go in mid-to-late October, and the first flocks of seagulls had already arrived. Apparently, they arrived half a month earlier than usual. Even though it was just the first flock, I felt it was already very beautiful.

I feel like I've only explored less than 5% of the Xishan Scenic Area, haha. There are definitely some special forces members in Kunming's Xishan Scenic Area! I had to catch the high-speed train to Dali this afternoon, otherwise I could have spent more time exploring. While taking the bus and sightseeing vehicle up the mountain, there were also many hiking routes. Seeing many signs and steps, it seems there are many other things to explore and experience besides Longmen. There was a senior citizen tour group from Guangdong, and their guide was saying, "Climbing Longmen will increase your worth a hundredfold!" Well, that strengthened my resolve to climb it! It definitely lived up to expectations. Although the climb wasn't long or too tiring, some steps were very steep, with angles of over 60 degrees. And the various caves and temples gave one the feeling that there were immortals and hermits hidden in the mountains—very mysterious and awe-inspiring. There weren't many people there early in the morning. It wasn't until I took the cable car down that I noticed a few people boarding, and very few people were going down. Finally, I hope this trip will really double my wealth! Everything goes smoothly, haha!

Located in Xishan District, Kunming City, Yunnan Province, China, the Haigeng Dam is a major engineering project connecting Dianchi Lake with the mainland and a landmark of Kunming. Haigeng Dam not only serves important flood control and drainage functions, but also attracts numerous visitors with its beautiful natural scenery and relaxing atmosphere. From the Haigeng Dam, one can admire the vast expanse of Dianchi Lake, shimmering in the sunlight, the water and sky blending into one, resembling a moving ink painting. In the distance, Dianchi Lake ripples with emerald green waves, occasionally soaring above, adding a vibrant and lively atmosphere. The dam's edges are shaded by lush trees, and there are walking paths and rest areas along the way, allowing visitors to stroll, feel the breeze, and enjoy the tranquil natural atmosphere. The Haigeng Dam presents a different beauty in different seasons. In spring, peach blossoms, cherry blossoms, and other flowers bloom in a dazzling display of color. In summer, the lake is lush and green, its waters emerald green and clear. In autumn, the leaves turn yellow, adding a golden warmth. In winter, mist occasionally lingers, adding a sense of mystery. Especially in the early morning or evening, when the setting sun shines on Dianchi Lake, the lake's surface shimmers with a golden glow, and the sky transforms into vibrant shades of orange, red, purple, and blue, creating a magnificent natural landscape. At these times, Haigeng Dam becomes a prime location for photography and leisure, a place that invites you to linger. In short, Haigeng Dam, with its vast expanse of water, rich natural landscapes, and tranquil atmosphere, is a rare and beautiful part of Kunming's scenic landscape.
