Atomium

4.3/5
348 reviews
The Atomium stands on the Heysel Plateau in the Laeken district on the northern outskirts of Brussels. This landmark was built for the 1958 Brussels World's Fair and designed by engineer André Waterkeyn, embodying the era's optimistic vision of scientific progress. It represents an iron crystal's unit cell magnified 165 billion times: nine spheres, each about 18 m in diameter, symbolize the nine iron atoms in the cell, connected by steel tubes to form a giant cubic lattice. The top sphere rises approximately 102 m above the ground. Originally clad in aluminum, the spheres were refurbished with stainless steel shells during renovations from 2004 to 2006, now gleaming silver in sunlight. Initially designed as a temporary pavilion with a six-month lifespan, its popularity led to its preservation, making it one of Brussels' and Belgium's most recognizable symbols today. Visitors can take a high-speed elevator in the central tube, reaching the observation deck in the top sphere in about 20 seconds. On clear days, the skyline of Brussels, the National Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Koekelberg, and the Mini-Europe park below are clearly visible. Moving between spheres via escalators in the inclined tubes, guests can explore the ground sphere's permanent exhibition on the 1958 World's Fair, rotating art and design displays in other open spheres, and workshop spheres hosting activities for children. Due to safety concerns, the three outer upper spheres lack vertical support and are closed to visitors, meaning not all nine spheres are accessible. The top sphere also houses a panoramic restaurant, offering dining with views from about 100 m above ground. At night, LED strips along the meridians illuminate the spheres in alternating patterns, resembling electrons orbiting a nucleus, adding a unique steel silhouette to Brussels' nightscape.Brussels · 30.7 km from Lier

Grand-Place of Brussels

4.6/5
598 reviews
Grand-Place of Brussels is the urban heart of Brussels and was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1998. The square is rectangular, approx. 100 m long and nearly 70 m wide, and is paved with granite. Most of the surrounding buildings were built in the late 17th century and still preserve their original appearance, bringing together a variety of architectural styles including Gothic, Baroque, and Louis XIV. One of the striking buildings on the square is the Brussels Town Hall, a typical Gothic building that reached its current scale after multiple expansions and renovations. The top of its spire is decorated with a sculpture of Saint Michael slaying a demon. The building with spires opposite the Town Hall is known as the "King's House" and now houses the Brussels City Museum. The gilded bronze statue of Everard 't Serclaes in a corner of the square is also worth noting; it commemorates the Brussels folk hero Everard 't Serclaes and depicts the scene of his death. Other buildings surrounding the square mostly belonged to historical guilds, and the facade of each guild building is decorated with sculptures of figures revered by the guild or symbolic animals. During the day, you can savor the beauty of the architecture. After nightfall, when the lights come on, the murals and carvings on the buildings shine brilliantly under the illumination, making it a great place for night photography.Brussels · 35 km from Lier

My feedback regarding today’s visit to the aquarium:The lobby was poorly ventilated, and the area was overcrowded with long queues of visitors. The space should be properly ventilated to ensure a more comfortable experience for everyone.

Antwerp Zoo is also worth visiting, with a rich variety of animals. It may not be as large as the large wildlife parks in China, but it is definitely worth a visit. The animals are relatively healthy and some are very active.

The Belgian Notre Dame Cathedral is a church with a long history. If you look closely at its architecture, you will find that it is very distinctive. If you have time, you can take a look at the walls. The statues inside are also very exquisite.

[Antwerp] With the help of friends, the efficiency is very high. I went to two museums in one day, both of which are very valuable. This building is very interesting. The view rotates 90° every time you go up to one floor. I came here. Friends, I suggest you don’t buy tickets, just go upstairs and don’t need to see the exhibition.
