Wat Phra That Si Don Kham, or as the locals call it, “Wat Huai Or”, is a large ancient temple containing the relics of the Lord Buddha. It was built around 1078 CE when Queen Chamadevi traveled from Lavo to Hariphunchai. This temple has been renovated many times. At present, its base is made of cement, while the upper part is decorated with gold metal plates.
There is a Phra Chao Phra To, a wooden Buddha statue in the Lanna style, measuring 74 cm. in lap width, 34 cm. in base width, and 8.84 cm. in height. It was made using a machete or a cleaver, and was completed within 1 day before sunset. It is also popularly known as “Phra Chao Than Jai”.
Another interesting thing is the bell, made from a bomb, which is the origin of the word “Phrae Hae Rabeed”. During the East Asia War or World War II, bombs fell. With the skill and wisdom of the locals, they took out gunpowder to explode to catch fish, leaving only the bomb casing, which was heavy iron. The locals felt sorry for it, so they helped carry it on carts to donate to the temple to make it into a bell. People passing by who did not understand it all said, “Phrae is a bomb.”
