The Masjid Selat Melaka is located on the artificial island of Malacca. If the water level is high, it looks like a floating building. The Straits Mosque under the sunset is very beautiful. The sound of chanting from the radio and the sound of the waves are intertwined. The golden dome is reflected in the setting sun. After dark, the mosque will light up, and the whole building will turn into another color, with a unique charm.Melaka Tengah · 1.7 km from Melaka

The Stadthuys is located on the banks of the Malacca River in Melaka Tengah, Melaka State, Malaysia, and is a representative architectural complex from the Dutch colonial period. Built between 1641–1660, it originally served as the official residence and administrative center for the Dutch governor and his officials, and is considered one of the oldest surviving Dutch-style buildings in Southeast Asia. The name "Stadthuys" means "city hall" in Dutch, and its function has changed several times throughout history. Today, the main area of The Stadthuys has become a history and ethnography museum, with exhibitions covering the period from the 15th-century Malacca Sultanate to the independence of Malaya in 1957, displaying artifacts from the Portuguese, Dutch, and British periods. The ethnography section recreates the living scenes of various ethnic groups, including Malays, Chinese, Indians, Portuguese Eurasians, and Peranakans (Baba Nyonya), with traditional wedding setups, musical instruments, ancient porcelain, weapons, stamps, and old currency all worth a close look.Melaka · 236m from downtown

Church of Saint Paul, Malacca

Church of Saint Paul, Malacca stands atop St Pauls Hill Melaka and is a roofless church ruin dating back to 1521. It was originally a small chapel built by the Portuguese to give thanks for surviving a storm at sea, and was later expanded by the Jesuits into the structure seen today. The missionary Saint Francis Xavier used this place as a base for his missionary work in China and Japan. After his body arrived in Melaka in 1553, it was temporarily buried here, and an empty grave remains in the church, which is said to be the original resting place. After the Dutch took over Melaka in 1641, the interior was used as a burial ground for a time, and the tombstones in Portuguese and Dutch lining the walls mostly date from this period. A white marble statue of Saint Francis Xavier stands in front of the church. The statue's right arm is broken. The day after its unveiling in 1952, a tree fell and broke the arm. Historically, Xavier's right arm was indeed sent to Rome as a relic, a coincidence often mentioned by visitors. The church is located in a spot with an expansive view, overlooking the city of Melaka and the Strait of Malacca.Melaka · 349m from downtown

The Malacca River is a small, narrow strait that connects the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra. There are boating activities on the Malacca River held here every day. The registration office is at the tourist center office behind the pier. . This tour takes 45 minutes and travels all the way through the city, where you will see old warehouses, fish markets and more. You will also pass KAMPUNGMORTEN, a typical Malay village house called VILLASENTOSA. The return journey will pass through various piers along the river. Yachts are also provided here to take tourists to the islands off the Straits of Malacca to play.Melaka · 295m from downtown

Muzium Istana Kesultanan Melaka sits at the foot of St Pauls Hill Melaka. It is a wooden palace reconstructed based on accounts in the ancient "Malay Annals," modeled after the royal palace from the 15th-century reign of Sultan Mansur Shah. The entire building uses hardwood for beams and columns and is joined with wooden wedges, without using a single iron nail; the traditional Malay woodworking craftsmanship itself is a major highlight. The palace stands three stories tall. The ground floor houses the throne hall where the Sultan received his ministers, while the upper levels feature restored living spaces such as the royal bedchambers. Walking through the levels allows you to see the full layout of the former court. The museum houses over 1,000 exhibits related to the Malacca Sultanate, ranging from royal attire and weaponry to everyday objects and paintings. Several dioramas recreate scenes of life in the Sultan's court, including the enduring Malacca legend of the duel between Hang Tuah and Hang Jebat.Melaka · 443m from downtown

Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum

4.4/5
130 reviews
Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum is nestled among the row houses of Melaka's old town. It was formed by connecting several terrace houses purchased by the Chan family in the mid-19th century, where four generations of the family lived. In the mid-1980s, the family's descendants opened it as a museum. It is still managed by the Chan family descendants, which is why the museum retains a strong sense of daily life, rather than just being an exhibition hall for artifacts. The Chan family ancestors came south from Tong'an, Fujian, and settled in Melaka in the early 19th century; it has now been passed down to the seventh generation. The house's owner, Chan Cheng Siew, was a second-generation Straits-born Chinese who started by planting gambier and later switched to rubber. He was known as the "boss with glasses." The interior furnishings roughly reflect the lifestyle of such wealthy families in the late 19th to early 20th centuries. The museum's highlights are its authentic, original furnishings: the parlor displays blackwood furniture from China, inlaid with mother-of-pearl and marble, with a silk embroidery several m high hanging overhead; the hardwood staircase leading to the second floor is adorned with gold-leaf carvings; several rooms still retain custom washbasins engraved with the owner's initials; decorative elements from the Dutch, Portuguese, Malay, and British colonial periods coexist in the same room with Chinese woodwork and embroidery, serving as a direct testament to this cultural fusion.Melaka · 105m from downtown

Taking the Melaka River Cruise is one of the most scenic and relaxing ways to explore the historic heart of the city. This 45-minute boat ride glides along the waterway that once served as a vital commercial artery for the spice trade. As you travel along the river, you will pass by a beautiful blend of old and new, including traditional Malay stilt houses in Kampung Morten, vibrant street art murals, and historic Dutch-era warehouses that have been converted into boutique cafes. The experience changes wonderfully depending on when you go. A daytime cruise offers a clear view of the colorful architecture and daily life along the riverbanks, while a sunset or night cruise transforms the journey into a magical, illuminated spectacle with the bridges and buildings lit up in brilliant colors. It is a fantastic, effortless way to take in the rich cultural tapestry of this UNESCO World Heritage city.

When visiting Malacca, one always wants to see the world-famous Straits of Malacca with their own eyes, to keep a promise to sail across the Straits. A special trip was made to the Floating Mosque, just to gaze upon this busy shipping lane. The sea was vast, and the sea breeze was strong. The architecture wasn't as stunning as expected, but the view of this strait was enough to leave a lasting impression. ✨

Holland Square in Malacca is a must-visit Instagrammable spot. The striking red colonial buildings stand out against the blue sky and white clouds, making for great photo opportunities. It's conveniently located on foot, not far from Jonker Street. The square itself isn't large; half an hour is enough to stroll around and take pictures. It's very popular with tourists. Nearby are fountains and an old church, offering a chance to soak up the historical atmosphere.

St. Paul's Hill is located in the heart of the Malacca Old Town World Heritage Site, near the Dutch Stadthuys and the Santiago Gate. It was once an important high ground of the Sultanate, and Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty designated it as the "National Mountain." The hill is not high; a short walk of about ten minutes up the steps leads to the summit. The view from the top is excellent, overlooking Malacca city, the Malacca River, and the Straits, making it a popular spot for sunset photography. Several small museums and the remains of a Dutch cemetery are also located nearby. At the top is St. Paul's Church (Gereja St. Paul), originally built by the Portuguese in 1521 as a church for Our Lady. In 1548, it was handed over to the Jesuits, where St. Francis Xavier preached. His body was temporarily buried here in 1553. After the Dutch occupation in 1641, it was renamed St. Paul's Church, later used as a cemetery and fortress; bullet holes are still visible in the outer walls. It is now a magnificent, roofless stone ruin. There is a white statue of Xavier in front of the church (missing his right hand); inside are scattered ancient tombstones inscribed with Portuguese/Latin; admission is free, and opening hours are the same as in the old town; the building itself is one of the oldest European colonial relics in Southeast Asia.

The Malacca River, steeped in history, has been transformed into a leisure and sightseeing destination, becoming a truly captivating tourist destination! 🤩 So, if you're in Malacca, a Melaka River Cruise is a must! ⛴ . Malacca's riverbanks are lined with beautiful flowers and plants 🌼🌿. As you cruise along, you'll see vibrant graffiti and vibrant buildings. It all feels so retro and historic, and a cruise is the perfect way to appreciate this historic city! 😆 . The view is breathtaking at night, when all the neon lights turn on, illuminating the entire river with a vibrant array of colors. 😍 Along both sides of the river, you'll find various small shops and bars, where you can see people strolling 🚶🏻, drinking and chatting 🍻, dining, and more 🍴. The old Sultan Palace is now called the Malay Heritage Center. It is located in the Kampong Glam Ethnic Cultural District along with Arab Street and the Sultan Mosque. It displays the history, life and cultural records of the Malay community in Kampong Glam, Singapore. The palace was built in the 19th century by Sultan Hussein's son, Sultan Ali. During the colonial period, in order to facilitate the rule of the Malays, the British government still allowed the Malay sultans and nobles to set up palaces and mansions here.

A cultural museum that is well worth a visit, showcasing Nyonya culture in a courtyard-style mansion that combines Chinese and Western cultures purchased in 1861. The exhibits are very detailed, all of which are used/displayed objects and cultural relics from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century. They are very well preserved and arranged as they were.
