Alyosha stands on a green cape hill on the east bank of Kola Bay in Murmansk, at an elevation of over 170 m, and the figure of this giant can be seen from many parts of the city. Its official name is the "Monument to the Defenders of the Soviet Arctic during the Great Patriotic War," completed in 1974 to commemorate the soldiers, sailors, and pilots who fought fiercely in the Arctic Circle during World War II. Locals gave this soldier, wearing a military overcoat and carrying a submachine gun, the affectionate nickname "Alyosha." This name comes from a widely sung song of the same name and is now more widely known than the official name. The statue itself is approximately 35 m high, and with the pedestal, the total height exceeds 42 m, making it one of the largest monumental statues in Russia. The soldier's gaze is directed westward, toward the Valley of Glory, where the fighting was particularly fierce. An eternal flame burns on the black stone platform in front of the pedestal, and an unknown soldier is buried nearby. Inside the pedestal, seawater from the area where the patrol boat "Tuman" sank and soil from the Valley of Glory battlefield are sealed, with the weight of remembrance hidden in these details. Standing on the observation deck on the hill and looking down, you can see the entire Kola Bay and the ice-free Arctic port. The midnight sun during the polar day and the twinkling lights during the polar night give this city a completely different appearance.Murmansk · 4 km from downtown

Murmansk Regional Museum Of Local Lore, founded in 1926, houses over 100,000 items and is an essential stop for understanding the history, people, and nature of the Kola Peninsula and the Russian Arctic. The building itself is worth seeing: a four-story historic building in the city center built in the 1930s. At one end of the building stands the massive iron anchor of the classic icebreaker "Yermak," which is easy to recognize and often serves as a photo backdrop for tourists. The entire museum is organized along a "from ancient times to the present" timeline. In the archaeology section, you can see the remains of a woman from an ancient tomb on Oleny Island, dating back approx. 8,000 years, an exhibit familiar to generations of Murmansk residents. The geology section houses rock cores extracted from over 10,000m deep in the Kola Superdeep Borehole, holding the secrets beneath this permafrost. The upper floors feature themed halls such as "Taiga," "Tundra," and "Ocean": specimen scenes like an Arctic fox molting or a family of moose walking through the forest are paired with sound and light effects to recreate the changing seasons. Traditional Sami clothing and everyday objects tell the story of the local inhabitants' lives, and historical materials regarding the Northern Fleet's wartime operations in the Arctic waters during the Great Patriotic War are also on display. The collection also includes personal items belonging to cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who served in the Northern Fleet in his youth, and artifacts brought back from voyages by Soviet Antarctic research vessels. The top floor concludes with the development of the contemporary Arctic and urban growth. Following recent renovations, the museum has significantly increased its interactive installations: a large globe you can spin by hand, a digital version of the "Red Data Book" of rare polar flora and fauna, and porthole-shaped viewing devices. If you want to know where this ice-free port city within the Arctic Circle came from and how the Sami people live, you can find all the answers here.Murmansk · 2.1 km from downtown
