Svalbard Global Seed Vault

Svalbard Global Seed Vault

5.7
5.0/5
2 reviews
Svalbard Global Seed VaultLocated near Longyearbyen in the Svalbard archipelago, Norway, it is situated deep within the permafrost of a sandstone mountain inside the Arctic Circle. It was funded by the Norwegian government and aims to provide a secure backup for crop seeds stored in gene banks around the world. The vault is built into the permafrost, allowing it to naturally maintain low temperatures even in the event of a power failure, which is why it is often referred to as the Doomsday Seed Vault. Its core concept is: even if a regional gene bank is damaged by war, natural disaster, or other emergencies, copies of those seeds can still be preserved here.Norway · Longyearbyen

28 reviews
NaeroyfjordenLocated in western Norway, it is a branch of the Sognefjord system known for its narrowness, connecting to the main Sognefjord via the Aurlandsfjord. It was carved by ancient glaciers and stretches for approx. 17 km, with mountains on both sides rising nearly 1,800m above sea level and standing almost vertically from the water's edge. In many places, the water narrows to approx. 250m, making a boat trip through it feel like traveling through a mountain crevice. In 2005, it was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO along with the Geiranger Fjord, and it is a classic representative of Norway's fjord landscapes.Norway · Aurland

The National Museum

7 reviews
The National Museum was formed by the merger of several art and design institutions. It is a renowned comprehensive art museum in Northern Europe, with a rich collection that traces the development of art, architecture, and design in Norway from ancient times to the present day. The dedicated Munch Room is a highlight for many visitors, where original works such as Edvard Munch's masterpieces "The Scream" and "Madonna" are on permanent display. The painting and sculpture exhibition area focuses on masterpieces of National Romanticism and the tradition of landscape painting. The design and craft exhibition area displays everything from ancient Greek vases and East Asian artifacts to contemporary Nordic furniture, as well as historical costumes, silverware, glass, and ceramics, providing a complete overview of the evolution of Nordic design. The building itself is also quite distinctive: the exterior walls are clad in dark slate, and the "Light Hall" on the top floor features a large glass ceiling that allows natural light to filter in, making it a highly recognizable space within the museum. Head to the Light Hall and the rooftop terrace, where you can enjoy distant views of the Oslo Fjord on a clear day.Norway · Oslo

Lysefjord

4.8/5
123 reviews
LysefjordLocated in southwestern Norway, with a total length of approx. 42 km, it is a long, narrow waterway carved by glaciers between granite mountains. The name "Lyse" comes from the light-colored granite on both sides. The fjord's landscape was initially formed by streams eroding an ancient plain, and later continuously sculpted by glaciers during multiple ice ages, ultimately shaping the deep U-shaped valley seen today. The cliffs on both sides of the fjord rise almost vertically from the water, with the highest points reaching around 1,000 m. The mouth of the fjord is located right next to Stavanger, and sightseeing boats can sail directly into the depths of the fjord for cruises.Norway · Forsand

81 reviews
Pulpit Rockis a natural flat-topped rock protruding into the air by the side of Lysefjord in Norway, with a nearly flat surface, suspended approx. 604 m above the fjord water, covering an area of approx. 600 square meters, and protruding over 30 m from the connected ridge. There are no railings on the edge of the rock platform, and beneath your feet is a nearly vertical cliff. Standing on the rock surface, Lysefjord narrows into a long, deep waterway in your field of vision, with steep mountains on both sides, clear reflections on the water when there is no wind, and passing cruise ships that look as small as toys. It is a highly recognizable fjord landscape in Norway.Norway · Songesand
Oslo Opera House

Oslo Opera House

5.4
4.3/5
92 reviews
Oslo Opera House is the home of the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet. It was designed by the Norwegian architectural firm Snøhetta and took approx. 5 years to complete. Located in the Bjørvika waterfront area, it is within walking distance of Oslo Central Station. The building faces the Oslo Fjord, with its sloping white roof rising gently from the water, resembling a floating iceberg from a distance, and is often described as a massive ship standing against the waves. The exterior walls are paved with white marble and granite, complemented by tall glass curtain walls, and it is considered one of the most significant cultural buildings in Norway in centuries, following the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. Walking on the roof is a signature experience here: you can walk all the way to the top along the gentle white ramp, where you can take in panoramic views of the fjord, passing ferries, and the city skyline. Inside the building, the foyer is decorated with oak, and an oval chandelier made of 5,800 handmade crystals hangs above the horseshoe-shaped main auditorium. On the water in front of the opera house, a steel and glass sculpture named "She" floats year-round, slowly changing its posture with the wind and tides, and has become a striking sight at the mouth of the bay.Norway · Oslo
Nusfjord - Historical Fishing Village

Nusfjord - Historical Fishing Village

5.4
Nusfjord - Historical Fishing Village is a rare example of an old fishing village in the archipelago that has been preserved in its entirety, and today the whole village is managed like an open-air museum. Reddish-brown fishermen's cabins stand on wooden piles by the water, while the blacksmith's shop, smokehouse, and old cod liver oil factory have been preserved in their original state. The old general store still maintains its original counters and shelves, and the wooden racks for drying cod by the village continue the tradition of stockfish that dates back to the Viking Age. People have settled here for over two thousand years, and during the peak of the cod season, thousands of fishermen once crowded this bay. Experiences in the village mostly revolve around the fishing port. You can go fishing on a traditional boat with a local captain. The cod you catch can be cleaned on the spot by the captain and even sent to the seafood-focused Karoline restaurant to be cooked for dinner. In the bathhouse, which was converted from an old warehouse by the sea, wood-fired hot tubs and saunas face the ocean. On winter nights, you can soak in the warm water while waiting for the aurora to streak across the sky, and on midsummer nights, you can watch the midnight sun paint the entire bay in gold. The café inside the old general store is famous for its traditional fish soup, and freshly baked waffles and cinnamon rolls with coffee make for an authentic fishing village afternoon tea, while the former whiskey cellar has been converted into an Italian bistro serving pizza and wine.Norway · Nusfjord
Senja

Senja

5.4
Senja is located within the Arctic Circle and is the second-largest island in Norway. Snow-capped mountains, fjords, white sand beaches, and fishing villages are all concentrated on this single island. The landscape contrast between the east and west sides is striking, which is why it is often called Norway in miniature. The west side of the island faces the open sea, with steep and desolate mountains. A jagged mountain ridge is vividly known as "The Devil's Jaw," and the wooden boardwalk viewing platform on the west coast faces this ridge directly; on the east side, fjords extend deep inland, with birch forests, pine forests, and fields intertwined. Hiking is the main way to experience this island: from the fishing village of Fjordgård, you can climb Segla mountain to overlook the sharp peaks plunging into the bay; the nearby Hesten mountain trail is less difficult and offers equally expansive views; the white sand beaches of Ersfjord are perfect for a stop along the Arctic coastline. The southern half of the island is also home to Ånderdalen National Park, which preserves centuries-old primeval pine forests and vast areas of alpine vegetation. Because it is located within the Arctic Circle, it experiences the midnight sun that never sets in summer, while in winter, it is a destination for chasing the aurora. Traditional fishing villages with red and yellow wooden houses are distributed along the coast. Among them, the Husøy fishing village is built entirely on a small islet, connected to the main island by a narrow bridge, making it a great place to experience the maritime atmosphere of Northern Norway.Norway · Senja

Arctic Cathedralis located in Tromso, Norway, situated on the mainland side across the strait from the city center. Completed in 1965, it was designed by architect Jan Inge Hovig. The roof on both sides is composed of multiple layers of aluminum-coated concrete panels, with a mountain-like silhouette that rises from the entrance toward the altar. From a distance, it resembles layered ice peaks or raised white sails, and some also describe it as looking like the aurora curtains. Its Norwegian display name means "Arctic Ocean Cathedral." Although it is actually a parish church, it has become a highly recognizable city symbol of Tromso due to this unique design.Norway · Tromsdalen
Hamnoy

Hamnoy

1 reviews
Hamnoyis a small fishing village in the Moskenes region at the western end of the Lofoten Islands, Norway. The village is concentrated on a small island connected to the main island by a road bridge, adjacent to the renowned fishing village of Reine. Surrounded by steep mountains and clear straits, the village features iconic brownish-red fishermen's cabins lined up along the rocky shoreline, which, together with the jagged mountain ridges in the distance, create a highly recognizable scene of the Lofoten Islands. The village owes its existence to the fishing season: the tradition of cod fishing and drying in the Lofoten Islands has continued for over a millennium. During the cod fishing season from winter to early spring each year, fishermen from all over Norway used to gather here. The red fishermen's cabins standing by the water were originally built as dwellings for these seasonal fishermen; some of the old cabins date back to the late 19th century, and today they still stand along the rocky shoreline, supported by stilts over the water.Norway · Moskenes

Highlights of the attraction ‌ ‌Human Life Bank‌ Known as the "Doomsday Seed Bank", it stores millions of crop seeds worldwide. It is designed to cope with species extinction caused by extreme disasters (such as nuclear war and climate change) and is the "last line of defense" to ensure food security‌12. The design is extremely safe and can withstand earthquakes and nuclear weapons. Because the permafrost environment has a natural constant temperature and humidity, it will not be affected by a 60-meter rise in sea level‌23. ‌Unique Geography and Symbolic Significance‌ Located 1,300 kilometers within the Arctic Circle, near Longyearbyen (only 5 kilometers from the city center), it is known as the "land of hope at the end of the world"‌14. The building's appearance is simple but futuristic. The underground warehouse goes deep into the mountain. Although tourists cannot enter the interior, they can check in and take photos on the periphery‌34. ‌Polar Experience‌ The surrounding area can be combined with polar activities: watch the aurora in winter and experience the polar day in summer (currently during the polar day period, you can visit all day)‌45. There are attractions such as the Svalbard Museum and the Arctic Exploration Museum nearby, and you can also join the polar expedition group organized by the locals‌14. ‌Tourist Comments‌ ‌Tracy Zyc‌ (2025-03-12): “5 points! Longyearbyen prohibits death, but hides the greatest ‘life bank’. Tens of thousands of seeds sleep here, and the end of the world is also a place of hope. The scenery is different during the polar day and night, and it is recommended to join the tour and check in.”‌4 ‌Frog‌ (social media): “The seed bank is like Noah’s Ark, a backup for human civilization. It is located on the mountain opposite the Longyearbyen Airport, and the permafrost environment allows seeds to be preserved for thousands of years without worry.”‌3 ‌Practical Information‌ ‌Opening Hours‌: Open all day throughout the year‌14. ‌Transportation‌: It can be reached by driving or taking a taxi from Longyearbyen for about 5 kilometers‌34. ‌Notes‌: The interior is not open to the public, and only external visits are allowed. The polar climate is changeable, and windproof and warm clothing is required. It is recommended to plan the itinerary in combination with other attractions in Longyearbyen (such as the pier and museum)‌14. ‌Summary‌ The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is not only a scientific miracle, but also carries humanity's profound thoughts on the future. Its polar location and doomsday backup settings give the trip a unique philosophical and ritual sense, suitable for explorers who pursue niche in-depth tours. If you plan a trip to the Arctic, you might as well list this as one of the must-visit places! (For more detailed itinerary suggestions or aurora viewing guides, you can further supplement‌15.)

The National Museum in Oslo is a must visit attraction for everyone visiting Norway! It showcases Norway’s rich artistic heritage beautifully, with an impressive collection of both classic and contemporary works from Scandinavian as well as artists from all over the world. The layout is inviting, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the art. One of the highlights is Edvard Munch’s masterpieces. I spent hours there and left feeling very inspired.

A fjord refers to an estuary with cliffs or slopes on both sides. There are many places with estuaries in the world. The fjords in Norway and New Zealand are relatively famous. In particular, the fjord scenic area in Norway is a major project of Nordic tourism. The beautiful fjords and the surrounding forests and mountains form a beautiful landscape painting.

While the photo captures a sense of loneliness, Preikestolen Rock is actually quite lively. You can capture the desired sense of pride. Be sure to go early for less light and fewer people. Otherwise, even if you're queuing, you won't be able to capture this feeling.

Where is the northernmost Catholic church in the world? It's Tromso in Norway. If you don't drive to the church, you can take the bus, but we choose to walk slowly, from the city center harbor, walk along the seaside, then walk up the bridge and go straight to see the church. The church is actually not big, because it was not open when I went, the front is glass, you can look inside, nothing special, then walked around the church, the back is stained glass windows, with white snow, very beautiful.
