Parque Nacional Los Glaciares
2026 Americas 50 - Best Things to Do

Parque Nacional Los Glaciares

7.9
4.8/5
44 reviews
Parque Nacional Los Glaciares is located at the eastern foothills of the Andes. The park features a vast ice field, one of the largest ice caps outside of Antarctica, which feeds dozens of large glaciers. Glacial meltwater flows into alpine lakes such as Argentino Lake, creating spectacular landscapes of icebergs and glacial lakes. The shores of Argentino Lake in the southern part of the park are the core tourist area. Perito Moreno Glacier is the iconic landmark here, with its ice wall towering above the lake surface, where the blue-and-white ice textures are clearly visible. This glacier has long maintained a state of near-equilibrium between accumulation and ablation, which is rare against the backdrop of global glacial retreat. In addition to viewing the full panorama of the glacier along the boardwalks, taking a boat to approach the glacier cliffs to look up at the ice wall, or putting on crampons to hike on the glacier surface are all unique ways to experience it. The park also contains other large glaciers, such as Upsala Glacier and Spegazzini Glacier, which flow into Argentino Lake and can only be reached by boat cruise. The northern part, represented by Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre, is a destination that mountaineering and hiking enthusiasts aspire to visit.Lago Argentino Department · >100 km from downtown

Perito Moreno Glacier

56 reviews
Perito Moreno Glacier's ice mass extends from the Andes to the shores of Argentino Lake, with an ice tongue approx. 5 km wide and rising approx. 70 m above the lake surface, forming a blue-and-white ice wall. Against the backdrop of retreating glaciers worldwide, it has long maintained a near-equilibrium state, making it one of only 3 glaciers in Patagonia that have not retreated—a characteristic that has garnered significant attention in glacial research. The glacier's surface is densely packed with crevasses and ice pinnacles, displaying a gradient of colors from cobalt blue to milky white under refracted sunlight, with the edges often covered in fresh snow during winter, creating distinct layers. The glacier is named after the 19th-century explorer Francisco Moreno. Its uniqueness lies in the ice mass periodically advancing to the opposite shore of the lake, forming a natural ice dam that divides the lake in two; the blocked water level rises continuously, and the pressure breaks through the ice wall, triggering a spectacular rupture as a large volume of lake water suddenly gushes out. This ice dam-rupture cycle has an irregular interval, ranging from 1–2 years to over 10 years, making it a rare dynamic geological phenomenon in nature.Lago Argentino Department · >100 km from downtown
Cerro Bayo Ski Boutique
No. 3 of Ski Resorts in Argentina

Cerro Bayo Ski Boutique

5.3
Cerro Bayo Ski Boutique is an Andean mountain in Neuquen Province, Patagonia, Argentina, located right next to the lakeside town of Villa La Angostura. Situated between a group of glacial lakes and the forests of Patagonia, it features a ski center on its slopes and is one of the important winter sports destinations in southern Argentina. Its moderate scale and relaxed atmosphere stand in stark contrast to noisy, crowded large-scale ski resorts. During the Southern Hemisphere winter, ski runs of varying difficulty levels cater to everyone from beginners to experts, and there are also several off-piste routes that wind through the forest. Take the gondola to the summit, where Nahuel Huapi Lake and the surrounding lakes, snow-capped ridges, and forests unfold into a vast panoramic view, which is the signature view here. Beginners have dedicated practice areas and magic carpet conveyors, and the resort is also equipped with a ski school, kids' club, and equipment rental; snow activities like snow tubing and snowshoeing are suitable for the whole family. In summer, it switches to a mountain resort mode, with sightseeing by cable car, hiking, mountain biking, paragliding, and forest ziplines making it a year-round destination; restaurants and cafes are distributed from the base to the heights, allowing you to enjoy delicious food and hot drinks while overlooking the lakes and mountains.Los Lagos Department · 11 km from downtown
Strait of Magellan

Strait of Magellan

5.1
5.0/5
39 reviews
The Strait of Magellan is a natural waterway between the southern tip of the South American continent and islands such as Tierra del Fuego. Located in southern Chile, it winds for over 500 km, connecting the South Atlantic and South Pacific Oceans. In 1520, the navigator Magellan led his fleet on a circumnavigation through this winding fjord into the Pacific Ocean, and it was named after him. Before the Panama Canal opened, this was an important route for ships traveling between the two oceans to avoid the massive waves of Cape Horn. Compared to the storm-prone Drake Passage, the water here is relatively calm. The mountains and islands along the shores are continuous, and the high-altitude ridges are covered in snow year-round. The barren mountains, rocks, and dark seawater interweave to create a desolate, Patagonian-style landscape that feels a bit like the end of the world.Curico · >100 km from downtown

Glacier National Park is so stunning! The blue ice stands tall, the cracks hide mysterious lights, and the meltwater from the glaciers merges into a blue lake, which is breathtakingly beautiful. Hiking in it, listening to the roar of ice cracking and watching the reflection of snow-capped peaks, it feels like entering a pure secret land of ice and snow. Every glance is a masterpiece of nature!

If you only visit the Glacier Park boardwalk, the glacier is quite far from the boardwalk and has receded significantly. However, ice hiking is a different story. The Mini 2 hike involves about an hour of hiking first, followed by about an hour and a half of ice walking with crampons. Finally, you can enjoy champagne and chocolate on the ice! I highly recommend ice activities.
