Golden Circle

7.1
4.4/5
25 reviews
Golden Circleis a classic, iconic tourist route in Iceland that connects three natural and historical landmarks northeast of Reykjavik into a small loop that most travelers can complete in one day. Thingvellir National Park is situated on the rift valley at the boundary of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, serving as both the site of Iceland's ancient parliament and a place where you can walk along trails between the fissures to intuitively experience the geological wonder of the two plates slowly drifting apart; in the Haukadalur geothermal valley, Geysir is the source of the English word "geyser," while its neighbor, Strokkur, is more active today, sending scalding columns of water into the air every few minutes; and Gullfoss waterfall concludes the itinerary with its majestic two-tiered cascade and canyon scenery. Each of the three stops offers something unique, allowing you to take in geology, geothermal activity, and water features all in one day, making it the perfect introductory route for experiencing the essence of Iceland's nature and history.Blaskogabyggd · 53.9 km from Selfoss

Route 1is Iceland's national main road, also known as the Ring Road because it circles the entire island. Completed in 1974, it has a total length of over 1,300 km and connects major towns such as the capital, Reykjavik, and the Capital of the North, Akureyri. It also connects most natural scenic spots, excluding the Westfjords and Snæfellsnes, making it a classic route for a self-drive tour around the island. Most sections of this road are two-way paved roads with good road conditions. Summer days are long, making it suitable for first-time visitors to plan an itinerary of about one week around the island. In winter, there is a chance to encounter the aurora along the way, but be aware of potential temporary road closures due to icy and snowy weather.Olfus · 28.3 km from Selfoss

Kerid Crater was formed by a volcanic eruption 6,500 years ago, and was later filled by rainwater to form this oval-shaped crater lake with a depth of approx. 55 m and a diameter of 170–270 m. Due to the absorption of minerals from the surrounding soil, the lake water has an eerie, deep green color, making it one of the three most famous crater lakes in the world. A walking path has been built around the lake for visitors to explore.Grimsnes- og Grafningshreppur · 13 km from Selfoss

Reykjadalur Hot Spring Thermal River

3.4
Reykjadalur Hot Spring Thermal River is a unique geothermal wonder in southern Iceland. "Reykjadalur" means "Steam Valley," a name that vividly describes the steaming landscape of this valley. Starting from the town of Hveragerði, hike along the trail for about 3–3.5 km, with an ascent of about 50 minutes, to reach a natural hot spring river with a comfortable water temperature. The water temperature ranges from 36–40°C, allowing you to soak and relax directly in the clear, warm current. The trail is rich in geothermal scenery, where hot mud pools, steaming vents, and emerald green meadows alternate, making the trail itself an enjoyable hiking experience. It is also open in winter; trekking through the snow to soak in the hot spring is one of the most wild outdoor hot spring experiences in Iceland.Hveragerdisbaer · 13.9 km from Selfoss

The Blue Lagoon is located in Grindavik on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwestern Iceland. It is a geothermal hot spring formed by volcanic lava. The water temperature is about 37-39 degrees Celsius. The lake water is rich in minerals such as silicon and sulfur, making it appear faint blue. Hot spring experience The Blue Lagoon has now become a symbol of Iceland. Many people who come to Iceland will choose to take a good bath here. Volcanic mud mask Don't forget to apply some silica mud on your face as a mask when taking a hot spring bath. The silica mud here is volcanic mud, which contains many minerals. Sauna In addition, you can also go to the sauna on the shore to steam for a while, and then come out to continue soaking. If it snows, it feels very unusual to immerse your body in warm water and look up at the white snow flying all over the sky.Grindavik · 70.9 km from Selfoss

The Icelandic Phallological Museum

21 reviews
The Icelandic Phallological Museum is located in the center of Reykjavik. It is one of the few museums in the world dedicated to specimens of reproductive organs, founded by Sigurður Hjartarson. This seemingly bizarre museum actually combines biological research with cultural interest, making it one of Iceland's unique popular science attractions. The collection covers hundreds of specimens from over a hundred mammal species, ranging from cetaceans, walruses, seals, and polar bears to native species like Icelandic horses and reindeer. A sperm whale specimen over one m long exudes an imposing presence, while the bone of a hamster's reproductive organ is only millimeters in size and requires a magnifying glass to see clearly. The specimens are systematically preserved in formaldehyde jars or mounted on walls. Human specimens are another highlight: the museum waited years for a suitable donated human specimen, and this story was even documented in a film; a set of silver sculptures modeled after Iceland's national handball team, which won silver at the Beijing Olympics, is also often talked about.Reykjavik · 51.2 km from Selfoss

Thingvellir National Park National Park is located approximately 45 km east of Reykjavik and is a key landmark of both historical and geological significance in Iceland. In 930 AD, Iceland's first national parliament was established here. It is one of the longest-running parliamentary institutions known in the world, and today it remains a venue for important national celebrations for Icelanders. The park is situated at the junction of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. The great rift clearly displays the boundary between the two continental plates, allowing visitors to intuitively experience the landscape formed by crustal rifting. In 2004, Thingvellir National Park was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list for its dual historical and geological value. Additionally, it is also widely known among fans as a filming location for the American TV series "Game of Thrones".Blaskogabyggd · 38.6 km from Selfoss

Gullfoss is one of the three famous waterfalls in Iceland. You can hear the rumbling sound of rushing water in the valley from a distance. When you get closer, you can feel the spectacular scenery of the whole waterfall. The rapid water flows down with a drop of about 50 meters. The waterfall is like a rolling torrent, roaring.

Lakes formed within volcanic craters are called crater lakes. These lakes form through a unique process: after a volcanic eruption, the magma within the crater cools and solidifies, forming a natural dam and accumulating water. These lakes are typically a deep blue, crystal-clear water, and are surrounded by a magnificent landscape formed by volcanic rock.

As a landmark hot spring in Iceland, it's definitely worth a visit. The colors are truly unique, and the scenery is beautiful. Soaking in the hot spring while looking at the volcano and snow-capped mountains, and enjoying a cocktail is very relaxing.

This was definitely the most unique and fascinating experience of my trip to Iceland! I thought it might be a niche attraction, but I was surprised by how rich and profound its content was. The museum houses a wide variety of specimens, from whales to humans, perfectly blending curiosity, science, and humor. The explanations are detailed and the layout is clear, not at all cheesy, but instead full of educational value and a sense of the wonder of life. The gift shop's creative souvenirs are truly hilarious. If you're tired of the usual natural scenery, a visit here will definitely bring you unexpected joy and reflection. Highly recommended for all open-minded travelers!

This museum is definitely worth the price of admission, and buying family tickets online is significantly cheaper than visiting the museum. The aurora, volcano, and ice cave experiences are truly breathtaking. It's a must-see for families. The rooftop observation deck is also worth a visit.

Thingvellir National Park is a spectacular destination where Iceland’s dramatic nature and fascinating history come together. The park features rugged landscapes, clear waters, lava fields, and impressive geological formations created by the movement of tectonic plates. I loved walking through the peaceful surroundings and enjoying the breathtaking views of mountains and valleys. The atmosphere feels incredibly fresh and open, making it a wonderful place to slow down and appreciate Iceland’s natural beauty. Thingvellir is also historically significant, adding another layer of interest to the visit. With its unique geology, scenic trails, and peaceful atmosphere, this national park is an unforgettable experience and definitely deserves a place on any Iceland itinerary.
