Sanniang Bay
No. 1 of Best Things to Do in Qinzhou

Sanniang Bay

7.3
4.9/5
3.4k reviews
Sanniang Bay is located on the southern coast of Qinzhou, a tranquil and beautiful small fishing village. Its famous attraction is the Chinese white dolphins inhabiting the nearby waters, though spotting them requires some luck. Beyond dolphin watching, the simple fishing village life here is also appealing. Whether strolling on the beach, foraging at low tide, or enjoying the peaceful coastal life, this is a perfect leisure destination. Most travelers come from downtown Qinzhou for recreation, with two main options. One is a round-trip day visit to enjoy the beach and rocky shores, then take a speedboat to spot dolphins before returning, taking about half a day. The other option involves a longer stay at the attraction, where travelers can lodge in fishermen-run homestays, savor fresh seafood, relax on the beach, and experience the tranquil coastal fishing village life for a leisurely getaway. Spring and fall are good times to see dolphins, with a higher chance of spotting them. They can occasionally be seen on the beach, but the better way is to take a boat trip. The attraction offers speedboating or fishing boat tours for dolphin watching, though no method guarantees a sighting. After sailing a certain distance from the coast, you will reach the habitat of the Chinese white dolphin. Sometimes you can spot these beautiful dolphins leaping out of the water. Adult white dolphins are mostly white and pink, while calves have darker skin tones. They are extremely precious, and the photos taken of them are utterly adorable. Many hammocks are hung among the trees on the beach of Sanniang Bay, where travelers can relax and enjoy the serene coolness of the seaside. There are also several large rocks by the shore, such as Sanniang Rock and Sea Mother Rock, where you can climb the reefs and take photos with the sea. In addition, the seafood in the fishing village is very fresh and worth trying.Qinzhou · 99.5 km from Shangsi

Ningming Huashan Rock Art Scenic Area

7.1
4.8/5

The Ningming Huashan Rock Art Scenic Area is located by the Ming River in Ningming County, Chongzuo, Guangxi. In 2016, the "Zuojiang Huashan Rock Art Cultural Landscape" was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and this site is the core component of that cultural landscape. On the steep limestone cliffs facing the river, dense clusters of ochre-red images painted by the ancient Luoyue people during the Warring States to Eastern Han periods can be seen. The main panel stretches over 100 m in width and dozens of meters in height, with over a thousand identifiable images, making its scale and preservation remarkably outstanding among similar rock art discoveries in China. In the local Zhuang language, this mountain is called "Bālái," meaning "the mountain with paintings." To see the rock paintings at Huashan, taking a cruise is the classic way. The boat sails on the Ming River flanked by karst peaks, offering picturesque views along the way. When approaching the cliff, look up to see images suspended dozens of meters above the river—frontal human figures with raised arms and spread legs in a frog-like squatting posture, densely covering the cliff face, interspersed with motifs like bronze drums, ring-pommel knives, ferries, and dogs. Scholars generally believe these cliff images depict sacrificial rituals of the ancient Luoyue people. Yet, why the hematite-painted patterns remain unfaded after over 2,000 years and how the ancestors climbed the high cliffs to create them remain debated. The cruise usually comes with a guide, making it far more engaging to listen to Luoyue legends while identifying the cliff images than a cursory glance. Don't rush to return after viewing the rock paintings. The traditional Zhuang villages of Laijiangtun and Bayaotun in the core area, built along mountains and rivers, are called the "living museum of rock art." Among bamboo fences, rice fields, and old houses, you can witness traditional crafts like bamboo basket weaving, Zhuang cloth making, and Zhuang embroidery, as well as taste local delicacies such as winnowing basket feasts, pounded glutinous rice cakes, and sugarcane wine. Every year on the third day of the third lunar month, the attraction hosts the Luoyue ancestor worship ceremony, with bronze drums, tianqin music, and folk songs creating a vibrant atmosphere—a perfect opportunity to experience Zhuang culture. A small tip: The rock paintings are high above the river, appearing as reddish-brown patches to the naked eye from a distance. To see the details of the figures clearly, secure a good viewing spot on the boat in advance, and bring a telephoto lens or binoculars for a more enjoyable experience.Ningming · 96.6 km from Shangsi

San Niang Bay is a low-key yet stunning national AAAA-level scenic area in Guangxi, renowned as the "Hometown of the Chinese White Dolphin." Here, azure seas and golden sands abound, uniquely shaped rocks abound, and the original fishing village exudes charm, blending culture and nature seamlessly. The highlight is the opportunity to take a speedboat out to sea for a chance to encounter the rare Chinese white dolphins; with luck, you might even spot a dreamy pink one. The sand is fine, the water clear, and at low tide, you can go beachcombing and collect shells. The Tianya Stone and San Niang Stone offer incredibly photogenic views. The area is not heavily commercialized, and the seafood is fresh and affordable, making it ideal for leisure vacations, family trips, and dolphin watching—a hidden gem in the Beibu Gulf for secluded seaside experiences.

Our group consisted of two adults and one child (4 years old). It was the child's first time seeing a sea lion show, and they were fascinated by the many different kinds of fish, even wanting to see it again the next day. Although it looks like there are only two buildings, walking around was quite tiring. The route could be improved, especially the area for small land animals shortly after the entrance. Other zoos also have animals like goats and monkeys, so it's unnecessary to spend too much energy there earlier. The Sky Gate was quite novel and a little scary for the child, but it was a great photo opportunity and attracted many adults. Overall, it's more suitable for children; I wouldn't recommend it specifically for adults. A very satisfying trip.

We took the Beihai International Passenger Port cruise ship to Weizhou Island, which took 80 minutes. We were in business class on the second floor, and the ride wasn't too bumpy. I didn't experience any seasickness. From Weizhou Island to Beihai, we took a slower ship, which took about 110 minutes; this time, we were in business class on the third floor. It was good value for money, a very pleasant experience, and the food on board wasn't expensive.

The Baimo Cave isn't as exaggerated as the media portrays it. There are indeed quite a few elderly people inside undergoing so-called magnetic therapy. Personally, I think it's damp inside and could easily lead to rheumatoid arthritis.

The Huashan Rock Paintings in Ningming are a World Cultural Heritage site. Carved on the cliffs along the Zuojiang River, they depict the beliefs and lives of the Luoyue people more than two thousand years ago. The content is truly breathtaking. Despite over two thousand years of wind and rain erosion, the colors remain vibrant and striking. The scenery along both banks of the Zuojiang and Mingjiang Rivers is also quite beautiful; a boat tour is a breeze and highly recommended.

This scenic area was surprisingly less crowded. After taking the sightseeing bus to the drop-off point, you can walk along the boardwalk and enjoy the sea view and mangrove forest. I think it's even better than Silver Beach, which is far too crowded.

A taxi ride from the city center costs a flat rate of 30 yuan for about 15 kilometers. Once you arrive at the scenic area entrance, the left-hand side is the entrance itself, featuring the Friendship Pass fortress and the French building, which explain the history of Friendship Pass. There are also artillery emplacements on both sides. At the end of the scenic area is the Friendship Pass border crossing, where you can exchange money.
