Hazrati Imam Mosque

15 reviews
Hazrati Imam Mosque is one of the centers of Islamic life in the capital of Uzbekistan. Its design is based on the classical Central Asian style of the Timurid period: two towers about 50m high flank the structure, the large blue dome is adorned with gold leaf inside, and the rows of carved sandalwood columns in the courtyard feature woodcarving styles from Kokand, Samarkand, and Bukhara respectively. Looking closely at them is like taking a tour of traditional woodworking craftsmanship from across Uzbekistan. The entire complex is named after the first Grand Imam of Tashkent, the 10th-century scholar Kaffal Shashi. It remains a place of worship used daily. For travelers interested in architecture and Silk Road culture, visiting this site along with the surrounding complex is the starting point for understanding the Islamic context of Tashkent.Tashkent · 4.2 km from downtown

State Museum of the Temurids is located right next to Amir Temur Square, where the equestrian statue of Timur stands, and was built to commemorate this renowned conqueror in Central Asian history. The entire building is circular, topped with a blue dome, and together with the equestrian statue on the square, it forms a striking urban landscape in this area. The layers of hanging crystal pendants reflect the geometric patterns, marble cladding, and gold-leaf paintings on the dome, making the entire space look magnificent. The main exhibits are concentrated on the second floor, ranging from medieval weapons, armor, maps, and gold and silver coins to jewelry, miniatures, and precious manuscripts. You can also see letters exchanged between Timur and his descendants and European monarchs, as well as scale models of Timurid dynasty architecture. Chorsu Bazaar is located in the heart of Tashkent's old city, adjacent to the Kukeldash Madrasah, and is a traditional market that has thrived for centuries. The massive concrete structure supports a huge dome covered in mosaics, where Soviet modernism and Central Asian domed traditions uniquely merge. The main building has multiple levels, and stalls are divided by category: in the fruit and vegetable section, apples, melons, pomegranates, and persimmons are piled high according to the season; another level is dedicated to dried fruits, nuts, and oriental sweets, and you can also buy rice for pilaf and hot naan freshly baked in tandoor ovens on the spot. The open-air area outside the dome has a more local feel, with stalls selling daily necessities, small appliances, clothing, and footwear stretching out. You can also watch artisans crafting bowls, musical instruments, and small boxes on-site. It remains a go-to spot for locals to do their daily shopping, vibrant with local atmosphere.Tashkent · 3.1 km from downtown

Amir Temur Square is the absolute heart of Tashkent and the perfect spot to start exploring the city.It is basically a huge, green roundabout with a massive bronze statue of Tamerlane on his horse right in the middle. The vibe here is super laid-back, clean, and safe. It gets especially lively in the evenings when the summer heat starts and both locals and tourists come out to stroll.

The museum is located on the north side of Timur Square, and the architecture is very distinctive. It is recommended to do your homework before coming, so that you will have a better experience of the exhibition. We did not hire a guide, and we only knew a little about history, so we could only take a quick look.

Chorzu Bazaar is a must visit whenever in Taskent. Here you can experience the vibrant atmosphere of sellers doing their best to offload their produce. Spices, teas, butchers, bakers, fruit and vegtable stands, you name it. Visit time is best in morning when crowds are big and you get the best feel.
