The Umbrellas by Zongolopoulos

5.0/5
1 reviews
The Umbrellas by Zongolopoulos is a steel sculpture installation created by Greek sculptor George Zongolopoulos in 1995, standing approx. 13m tall and made of stainless steel. The work was exhibited at the 1995 Venice Biennale and was subsequently installed in 1997 as a permanent public art installation on the New Waterfront of Thessaloniki. The sculpture consists of dozens of metal umbrellas, which are fixed at an angle to vertical poles and supported by horizontal metal rods to provide structural stability in strong winds, while also symbolizing visual elements of raindrops or wind. The sculpture not only creates visual effects during the day due to its luster and reflection of the seascape, but also becomes particularly striking at night with the help of lighting. Its location near the Thermaic Gulf, facing the sea and the horizon, creates a sense of openness and spatial tension. The artist once described a dialogue between this installation and its location: the light image of the umbrellas appears vivid as it overcomes the challenges of wind and the environment, while the changes in night lighting, daylight, wind, and clouds allow viewers to have different experiences at different times.Thessaloniki · 2 km from downtown

Athens, a city that was extremely glorious 2,500 years ago, now appears in front of us in a very simple appearance. A small airport, an inconspicuous road, and the clouds and sunlight on the road are playing tricks. There is a sacred feeling in the air, as if gods live deep in the deserted wilderness. Aristotle Square is definitely a central area that you should come and see!

Arch of Galerius, locally known as Kamara, is a remarkable Roman monument in Thessaloniki, Greece. Built in the early 4th century AD, it was constructed to celebrate Emperor Galerius’ victory over the Persians. The arch once formed part of a grand imperial complex that included the nearby Rotunda.Although only part of the structure survives today, its detailed marble reliefs still tell powerful stories of ancient battles and Roman triumphs. Standing proudly in the city center, the Arch of Galerius remains a symbol of Thessaloniki’s rich history and cultural heritage.
