Cathedral of Toledo

4.7/5
199 reviews
The Cathedral of Toledo is a church that retains its medieval appearance to this day. As the second-largest cathedral in Spain, it was once the primary cathedral of the Spanish Christian archdiocese when first completed. The main structure features Gothic style, while its interior decor incorporates artistic elements such as Mudéjar, making it a vast architectural complex that blends multiple artistic styles. The Cathedral of Toledo is the seat of the Cardinal Archbishop of Spain. From 1088, it was granted the title of "Primatial Cathedral" by the pope, giving it a special status among Spain's many cathedrals. The current structure began construction in 1226, a project that spanned over two centuries until the central nave vault was completed in 1493, marking the completion of the main body. It adopted the French Gothic architectural style, which was rare in Spanish churches at the time, while incorporating local artistic elements such as Mudéjar and other regional features. Completed in 1493, the cathedral fully embodies the unique Spanish Gothic artistic style in its architecture. The bell tower on the left side of the church's main entrance stands approx. 90 m tall, housing a massive bell weighing over ten tons. The main hall measures 112 m in length, 56 m in width, and 45 m in height, supported by 88 large stone pillars. The main hall and its surrounding 22 small chapels form the most lavishly decorated section of the entire complex, with the five sets of colored pinewood carvings depicting Jesus's life on the main altar being particularly magnificent. Additionally, the choir loft is another highlight of the church. Located at the center of the main hall, the choir's two rows of seats are masterpieces of Spanish woodcarving—the upper row in Renaissance style and the lower in Gothic, blending harmoniously. The upper row features carvings of saints, while the lower row depicts historical scenes from the Reconquista's capture of Granada.Toledo · 713m from downtown

Alcázar of Toledo dominates the highest point of the old city. Its square outline with high towers at the four corners makes it a highly recognizable landmark on the Toledo skyline. Its history is layered: its origins can be traced back to a palace from the Roman era, it evolved into a fortress in the Middle Ages, and it was rebuilt in the 16th century during the reigns of Charles I and Philip II, which established its Renaissance appearance. The siege during the Spanish Civil War almost razed it to the ground, but it was rebuilt to its original state after the war, so the exterior walls seen today still retain their Renaissance style. Today, there are two main spaces to explore in the castle. The Army Museum tells the history of Spain's military in chronological order, with a considerable collection of swords, firearms, military flags, and uniforms. The exhibition route also incorporates the castle's archaeological remains. Remnants from the Roman and Visigothic periods and sections of the inner wall from the Arab era are exposed along the visitor path, like open pages of history. The Library of Castilla-La Mancha on the top floor offers a different experience. Located on the top floor, the library offers a view of the entire city of Toledo, taking in the rolling rooftops of the old city and the surrounding mountain scenery.Toledo · 811m from downtown

San Martin's Bridge

4.5/5
61 reviews
San Martin's Bridge is a medieval stone bridge spanning the Tagus River, located on the west side of the Old Town of Toledo. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, and it was later rebuilt under the direction of Archbishop Pedro Tenorio of Toledo to connect the old town with the area on the west bank of the river. Together with the Alcantara Bridge to the east, it guards the passage in and out of the old town from the west and east. The entire bridge is built of regular stone, with a crenellated tower at each end, still showing the defensive grandeur of a medieval bridgehead. The bridge has five arches, with the central arch spanning approximately 40 m, and the other arches are distributed on both sides. At the time of its construction, few bridges in the world could achieve such a span. A local anecdote is often told: on the eve of its completion, the architect discovered a miscalculation and realized the bridge would collapse the day the scaffolding was removed. His wife burned the scaffolding overnight to save him, and the bridge was later rebuilt—the legend may not be true, but it adds a touch of drama to this old bridge. Today, the bridge is for pedestrians only. Walking slowly down the slope from the old town across the bridge, you can see the bend of the Tagus River beneath your feet. Looking back, you can see the city walls and towers lined up along the cliff top, with Toledo standing on the high ground surrounded by the river. At sunset, warm light covers the stone bridge and the cliffs, and the opposite bank is often crowded with travelers who have come specifically to wait for the sunset. From a slightly further position on the opposite bank, you can capture the stone bridge, the towers, and the entire old town in one frame.Toledo · 897m from downtown

Monasterio de San Juan de los Reyes

Monasterio de San Juan de los Reyes is located in the former Jewish Quarter of the Old Town of Toledo. It is a Franciscan monastery commissioned by the Catholic Monarchs, King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile, and designed by architect Juan Guas. It is considered one of the representative buildings of the Isabelline style in Spain. It was initially built to commemorate the victory at the Battle of Toro and the birth of Prince John, and was planned to serve as the mausoleum for the two monarchs. Later, the two monarchs were reburied in Granada, and this plan was shelved. The site was chosen in Toledo both because it was located in the center of Spain and because it was the former capital of the Visigothic Kingdom. The highlight of the visit is the two-story cloister. The ground floor features late Gothic pointed arches and vaults, with beams adorned with statues of saints and floral and animal patterns. The upper floor uses Mudéjar craftsmanship, with wooden ceilings carved with rows of eight-pointed star patterns. Between the arches, one can find the coats of arms of the two monarchs and the motto "Tanto monta" (meaning the King and Queen are equal). A quiet little garden is enclosed in the center of the cloister. The interior of the church is a high and spacious single-nave space, where the shields held by eagle emblems and the yoke and arrow symbols covering the walls echo the marks of the two monarchs everywhere. The set of iron chains and shackles hanging on the exterior facade has a special origin. They were hung by order of the Queen to commemorate the Christian captives released during the Reconquista, and they are now one of the striking symbols of this monastery.Toledo · 668m from downtown

Toledo City Hall is located in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento in the old town of Toledo, Spain. Adjacent to the Cathedral of Toledo and the Archbishop's Palace, it stands as a significant administrative and architectural landmark in this historic city. Built in the 17th century, this structure blends a main building in the Renaissance style with twin spires in the Baroque style. Its facade features a classicist design, showcasing the artistic characteristics of a blend of diverse cultures. The main structure was designed with the participation of Spanish architect Juan de Herrera, and later decorated by the son of the painter El Greco. The spiral spires atop the twin towers are particularly striking, and the roof is adorned with the double-headed eagle emblem of the Holy Roman Empire, echoing the historical legacy of the era of Charles V. The Plaza del Ayuntamiento, where the city hall is located, is the heart of Toledo's history and culture. It hosts festivals year-round, such as the renowned Toledo Carnival, which attracts many locals and tourists alike, showcasing the city's rich cultural traditions.Toledo · 721m from downtown

The Pisagra Gate is the main gate of the city of Toledo and was built in the mid-16th century. Since the east and west and south are separated by the Tagus River, this is the only city gate that can enter the ancient city. The door is engraved with the emblem of King Carlos I of Spain, and on the city wall is engraved the inscription of Spanish literature master Cervantes to Toledo: "The glory of Spain, the light of the Spanish city".Toledo · 186m from downtown

Toledo Cathedral, the second largest church in Spain, is located in the center of the ancient city. In the 6th century, the Goths built a religious temple here; in the 9th century, the Moors converted it into an Islamic temple; from 1226 to 1493, it was converted into a Catholic church. The towering bell tower, the magnificent vault, the wide and majestic nave, the chapel surrounded by stars... each piece of rare treasure has created an exquisite masterpiece of Gothic architecture and has become a timeless classic landmark of the ancient city. The 90-meter-high bell tower of the church is the highest point in the ancient city. Walking through the narrow streets, looking up... you can always see her and you will not get lost. In the Town Hall Square in front of the cathedral, there are often street performers with self-assured expressions, adding a bit of elegant artistic atmosphere.

Torredo is indeed one of Spain's most magnificent cities. Perched dramatically atop a canyon overlooking the Rio Tajo, it was known in the Middle Ages as the "City of Three Cultures," where Christian, Muslim, and Jewish communities were said to have coexisted peacefully. Unsurprisingly, the remnants of this unique cultural complex, rediscovered in modern Torredo, remain captivating. A mosque with horseshoe arches, the remains of a Spanish Jewish synagogue, and one of Spain's most beautiful Gothic cathedrals are all crammed into the historic heart of the city. But there are deeper layers to explore. Further exploration reveals Visigothic and Roman roots. Art is another highlight of Torredo, particularly the mesmerizing paintings of El Greco, an influential and unclassifiable painter who is synonymous with the city. Popular with day trippers, it's also worthwhile to stay overnight to truly experience all the city's unforgettable glory.

I took advantage of the lunch break to listen to Linda's "Spanish Notes" intermittently. There is a chapter about the San Martin Bridge. I didn't remember his description of this stone bridge built in the 13th century. I only remember the fate of two princesses. A Spanish princess walked out of the San Martin Bridge tremblingly. Two years later, she was tortured and killed by the King of France. Another French princess walked into Toledo from the San Martin Bridge in style, opening the transition of Spain from the Moorish era to Catholicism. When I arrived at the San Martin Bridge, I saw a defense tower standing on each side of the bridge. Under the bridge was the Tagus River. Entering from the defense tower at the head of the bridge, it was five or six meters deep and more than three meters wide. There was a hanging door embedded in a stone trough hidden in the arched doorway. The Spanish national emblem engraved on the door head of the defense tower near the town looked particularly gorgeous, but Wu resolutely refused to take a photo with it, fearing that the ghost of the Spanish princess would linger here.
