Diocletian's Palace, located in Split, Croatia, was the palace where the Roman Emperor Diocletian lived after his abdication. Built in AD 295-305, the palace is a magnificent seaside fortress and a giant country house. The entire palace is about 215 meters long from north to south, and the palace wall is about 2.1 meters thick. The ruins of the palace are part of the historical core of Split and were declared a World Heritage Site in 1979.Split · 15.3 km from Trogir

26 reviews
Trogir Old Town is situated on a small island on the Dalmatian coastal region of Croatia, connected to the mainland by a short bridge at one end and to the island of Čiovo at the other. It takes just over ten minutes to walk from one end of the small town to the other. Since its founding by the Greeks, it has endured for over two thousand years, with its medieval street layout and stone architecture preserved almost intact. Narrow alleys connect churches, noble palaces, and squares of various sizes, where Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance facades often appear on the same street. The Cathedral of St. Lawrence is the architectural heart of the old town. Its main entrance portal was created by the sculptor Radovan and is carved with biblical scenes, months, and labor motifs. You can climb the adjacent bell tower to overlook the sea of red-tiled roofs and the Adriatic Sea. The Kamerlengo Fortress at the western end of the old town was built by the Venetians. Walking a loop along the walls and towers offers a panoramic view of the entire old town, the yacht marina, and the coastline, making it a great spot for photography. The seaside promenade on the south side is a favorite gathering place for locals in the evening. One side is lined with yachts, while the other is filled with cafes and restaurants where you can sit down and taste authentic Dalmatian cuisine. Small shops in the alleys sell handicrafts and local specialties. When visiting, you might want to slow your pace; corners like the City Loggia and the Čipiko Palace, which are easily overlooked, also hold the details of the old town.Trogir · 87m from downtown

Old Split

4.4/5
28 reviews
Old Split is located on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia, on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea, and is the birthplace of the entire city of Split. What makes it special is that the old town "grew" out of the fabric of a Roman palace: approximately 1,700 years ago, after the Roman Emperor Diocletian abdicated, he built his residence here. In the 7th century, when the nearby ancient Roman city of Salona was destroyed by war, refugees moved into the thick walls of the palace to settle, and a city thus took root within the palace walls. Today, Diocletian's Palace still occupies about half of the old town's area. Thousands of residents live within the palace walls, where cafes, restaurants, and small shops are squeezed under the same roofs as ancient Roman foundations and colonnades. It is less of a ruin and more of a "living" Roman palace city. The highlights of the visit are concentrated in the core area of the palace: the Peristyle was the square in front of the main hall at that time, surrounded by stone columns. Beside the steps lies an Egyptian black granite sphinx that is even older than the palace, an antique that Diocletian brought back from Egypt; the Emperor's Mausoleum was later converted into the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, with a Romanesque bell tower standing beside it, while Jupiter's Temple became the baptistery of the cathedral; the vaulted halls of the palace cellars are well-preserved, and the deep passages were used as a filming location for the city of Meereen in the TV series "Game of Thrones," making it a popular spot for fans to visit; the four gates named after metals—the Golden Gate, Silver Gate, Brass Gate (Porta Aenea), and Iron Gate—serve as natural landmarks for orienting yourself while walking through the old town. If you encounter Klapa singers performing a cappella under the dome of the Vestibule, the a cappella harmonies echoing off the stone walls will be an unforgettable moment in the old town. The old town is also dotted with museums such as the City Museum and the Ethnographic Museum, with collections ranging from Roman stone carvings to folk costumes; every summer, the Split Summer Festival, which has been held since the 1950s, turns open-air venues like the Peristyle into stages, with operas, plays, ballets, and concerts performed in rotation. When you are tired of walking, you can go to the Riva promenade on the south side of the palace to enjoy the sea breeze and watch the cruise ships come and go. The alleys of the old town are narrow, and walking inside feels like a maze. Wandering through them casually makes it easy to stumble upon courtyards and small shops hidden in corners. In the early morning and evening, there are relatively fewer tourists, allowing you to better experience the daily atmosphere of this ancient city.Split · 15.3 km from Trogir

Diocletian's Palace, located in the heart of Split's Old Town, is more of an old town than a palace. Two-thousand-year-old stone walls have blended into cafes and residential buildings; the clock tower, a later addition, offers panoramic views of red rooftops and the Adriatic Sea. The cellars now house souvenir stalls, the air thick with the scents of stone and olive oil. A few meters apart outside the south water gate, the masts of yachts and ancient Roman columns create a sense of time standing still. It's usually quite crowded, but in the evening, after the tourists have left, it quiets down, and you can hear your own footsteps on the cobblestone streets.

The old town area is quite large. Walking out is the seaside and the port. Diocletian's Palace is also located in the middle of the old town of Split. There are many free parking spaces on the roadside in the old town. But they are basically full, so you have to find a gap and go in when you have time.

Continue walking west along the road outside the St. Francis Monastery building. You will see a signpost for Marjan Forest Park on the roadside. Just go up the mountain. There are few tourists along the way. Many houses along the way can be accommodated. It is estimated that it will be very lively in summer. Although it is climbing a mountain, it is almost stressless because it is a slow walk. It will soon reach the cafe halfway up the mountain. You can overlook the city scenery of Split from the observation deck on the side of the mountain, but the height of the pine trees has obviously blocked part of the view. [Scenery]

Split, Temple of Jupiter, the black marble Egyptian sphinx at the entrance is 3,500 years old, but unfortunately it has been "beheaded". In contrast, the sphinx on the right side of the cathedral bell tower is well preserved.
