Hunter Region
No. 1 of Best Things to Do in North Coast (New South Wales)

Hunter Region

5.8
4.1/5
91 reviews
Hunter Region is located in New South Wales and is one of the birthplaces of the Australian wine industry. As early as the 1820s, the first local vineyards were established along the Hunter River, and the winemaking tradition continues to this day. Today, the valley is home to hundreds of wineries and tasting rooms. Semillon white wine and Shiraz red wine are the two signature offerings here, especially the Semillon, which has a crisp acidity and refreshing citrus aroma when young, and evolves into complex flavors of honey and toast after several years of aging—a layered experience of two distinct flavor profiles in one wine that is not easily found in other regions. When visiting the Hunter Region, a common route centers around the wineries in the Pokolbin area. Family-run boutique wineries, large estates with accompanying restaurants and gardens, and tasting rooms with art galleries are scattered nearby. You can self-drive, cycle, or join a tour to hop from one to another, turning wine tasting into a full day of culinary exploration. Gourmet shops like cheese factories are also open around the wineries. Ordering a cheese platter to pair with local wine and savoring it slowly is a classic way to relax in the region. If you want a change of perspective, taking a hot air balloon ride in the early morning to overlook the vineyards and rolling hills under the rising sun is a renowned signature experience in the Hunter Region. If your budget allows, you can also choose a helicopter tour. For companions with less interest in wine tasting, they can also visit the gardens to explore the themed landscapes.Upper Karuah River · 10 km from downtown

Featherdale Sydney Wildlife Park is located in Sydney's western suburbs, on the way from the city to the Blue Mountains, making it a stop included in many Blue Mountains 1-day tours. This privately founded zoo houses over 2,000 native Australian animals, including dozens of endangered species, offering an excellent opportunity to encounter local wildlife in Sydney. Here you can see wombats, echidnas, dingoes, little penguins, cassowaries, kookaburras and more, observe massive saltwater crocodiles across water barriers, and even spot endangered Tasmanian devils. A highlight is entering the open kangaroo and wallaby area to hand-feed them, stroking koalas and taking photos in the koala zone, or visiting the lorikeet flight aviary where colorful parrots fly and perch around visitors. The park also hosts multiple daily keeper talks and feeding sessions, where you can hand-feed little penguins under keeper guidance. Quokkas, typically found in Western Australia, have also made their home here, offering a rare sighting in Sydney.Australia · Doonside

WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo

1k reviews
WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo is located in Darling Harbour, adjacent to SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium and Madame Tussauds Sydney. It is a rare compact zoo in Sydney's city center, primarily featuring indoor exhibits focused on native Australian wildlife. The layout follows a single path, allowing visitors to explore the entire zoo in about two hours. Here, you can see five iconic Australian animals: kangaroos, koalas, wombats, platypuses, and crocodiles. The zoo is divided into themed zones based on natural habitats: the Kangaroo Walkabout is an open area where you can observe western grey kangaroos up close; Koala Rooftop is the zoo's highlight, offering not only regular viewing but also opportunities to book photo sessions inside the koala enclosure or join a koala breakfast experience during their active morning feeding time. The Devil Den houses the loud, powerful-jawed Tasmanian devils, an endangered marsupial species now mainly found in Tasmania. The Daintree Rainforest zone features southern cassowaries, musky rat-kangaroos, and satin bowerbirds. Patience is needed at the Platypus Pool, as these egg-laying mammals often hide among underwater branches. The Nightfall area simulates nighttime conditions, where nocturnal creatures like sugar gliders and bilbies become active. Other sections include the freshwater crocodile billabong, zones for echidnas and Goodfellow's tree kangaroos, and insect displays with spiders, stick insects, and giant snails, alongside reptiles like snakes and lizards. During your visit, check the keeper talk schedules—many animals, from wombat "Ringo" to cassowary "Princess," have dedicated sessions where caretakers share fun facts about their behaviors. After exploring, Darling Harbour's restaurants and waterfront views are just a short walk away, making it ideal for a half-day urban itinerary. △ Get up close with adorable koalas △ Watch adorable quokkas △ Meet the giant saltwater crocodileAustralia · Sydney

The theater isn't very large, so the view from the second floor was excellent, and the actors' performances were very lifelike, with very interesting dialogue. Plus, the theater has a beautiful terrace with floor-to-ceiling windows; I took some lovely photos there in the afternoon!

I booked my tickets at the zoo entrance, and they were confirmed instantly. I just scanned the code to enter, and they were exactly the same as the official tickets, but much cheaper. There are all sorts of animals and shows; you could easily spend a whole day experiencing them all. If you're short on time, just see the main attractions or things you like, such as the classic view of the giraffes by the sea alongside the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. The round-trip boat ride offers various views of the Opera House and the CBD skyline.

Amazing whale-watching experience in Sydney! 🐋I really enjoyed this experience from start to finish. The scenery and the whole environment were absolutely beautiful, and we were lucky enough to see a lot of whales! It was amazing watching them in their natural environment, and the experience was even better than I expected. Definitely a great activity to do while visiting Sydney, and I would happily recommend it to others!

We visited the Sydney Tower Eye with my family and had a fantastic time. Booking our tickets through Trip.com was very easy, and there were a lot of different options available to choose from. I highly recommend going on a sunny day so you can get the most out of the views. Looking down at Hyde Park and the Anzac Memorial was a definite highlight. Highly recommended!
