Hazrati Imam Mosque
No. 1 of Best Things to Do in Uzbekistan

Hazrati Imam Mosque

6.2
4.8/5
15 reviews
Hazrati Imam Mosque is one of the centers of Islamic life in the capital of Uzbekistan. Its design is based on the classical Central Asian style of the Timurid period: two towers about 50m high flank the structure, the large blue dome is adorned with gold leaf inside, and the rows of carved sandalwood columns in the courtyard feature woodcarving styles from Kokand, Samarkand, and Bukhara respectively. Looking closely at them is like taking a tour of traditional woodworking craftsmanship from across Uzbekistan. The entire complex is named after the first Grand Imam of Tashkent, the 10th-century scholar Kaffal Shashi. It remains a place of worship used daily. For travelers interested in architecture and Silk Road culture, visiting this site along with the surrounding complex is the starting point for understanding the Islamic context of Tashkent.Uzbekistan · Tashkent

12 reviews
Shah-i-Zinda necropolis is a complex of mausoleums located northeast of Samarkand, Uzbekistan, situated on the slopes of the ancient city ruins of Afrasiyab. Dating back to the 11th century, it currently houses over 20 mausoleums and ritual buildings, divided into lower, middle, and upper groups, connected by four domed entrance halls to form a long, sloping corridor of tombs. The building facades are adorned with lapis lazuli blue and turquoise glazed tiles and mosaics, featuring geometric patterns, floral scrolls, and Arabic calligraphy, resembling an open-air museum of blue tiles. On a sunny day, taking a low-angle shot of the layered arches from the entrance steps, or looking back at the blue facades on both sides from the middle of the corridor, are unmissable scenes during a trip to Samarkand.Uzbekistan · Samarkand

Registan Square

43 reviews
Registan Square is the central square of the old city of Samarkand and an important center for the city's social life, once surrounded by markets and commercial streets. Today, its most prominent feature is the architectural complex formed by three large madrasas. During the day, you can walk into the courtyards of each madrasa to examine the arcades, painted domes, and small rooms where students once lived. From the second-floor corridors of some courtyards, you can even overlook the city. After nightfall, the lights come on, and the architectural outlines are clearly defined by the warm glow. In the evening, there are often light projection shows using the facades as screens. Dusk to night is a great time to experience the atmosphere of this ancient Silk Road city.Uzbekistan · Samarkand

Amir Temur Square is one of the key local landmarks. In its center stands a bronze equestrian statue of Timur, with the warhorse rearing and Timur depicted in royal robes with a majestic expression. The pedestal is inscribed in multiple languages with his famous quote, "Strength is in justice," and this statue is now one of the iconic images of Tashkent. The overall space here is quite open, with surrounding green spaces, trees, and city roads forming an open urban public space, making it a square with significant historical symbolism in the Tashkent urban landscape.Uzbekistan · Tashkent

Ark of Bukhara

5.5
4.7/5
10 reviews
Ark of Bukhara is a massive royal citadel built of rammed earth. It covers an area of nearly 4 hectares and is surrounded by high walls. Most of the existing structures were built after the 17th century and have been converted into several themed museums, including archaeology, history, numismatics, nature, and manuscripts. The archaeology and history museums house artifacts unearthed from ancient city ruins such as Varakhsha and Paykend, and the former audience hall and coronation hall are also open to visitors. Walking in from the ramp between the two entrance towers, the dim corridor beneath your feet was once the vital passage to the citadel, with storerooms and prison cells on both sides. Many tourists walk through in a hurry, but it is actually worth slowing down to take a closer look.Uzbekistan · Bukhara

Amir Temur Mausoleum Gur-i Amir Сomplex

5.5
4.2/5
6 reviews
Amir Temur Mausoleum Gur-i Amir Сomplex is the family mausoleum of the Timurid dynasty, located in Samarkand. It is an octagonal building crowned with a large, azure ribbed dome. Several ridges radiate evenly from the apex, and blue, light blue, and white tiles form geometric patterns on it, creating a highly recognizable silhouette on the Samarkand skyline. The entrance portal is adorned with carved bricks and mosaics, with a tower standing on each side. Stepping inside reveals a different world, where the lower half of the walls is covered with onyx slabs, and the arches and inner dome are filled with gilded high-relief paintings, their opulence undimmed even in the dim light. The sarcophagi in the hall are merely markers. The actual burial chamber containing the remains is hidden beneath the ground. Standing in the courtyard and looking up at the large blue dome is also a stop worth making on your Samarkand itinerary.Uzbekistan · Samarkand

State Museum of the Temurids

4.7/5
9 reviews
State Museum of the Temurids is located right next to Amir Temur Square, where the equestrian statue of Timur stands, and was built to commemorate this renowned conqueror in Central Asian history. The entire building is circular, topped with a blue dome, and together with the equestrian statue on the square, it forms a striking urban landscape in this area. The museum has 3 floors, with the entrance located on the basement level, leading into the central hall on the first floor. The hall is surrounded by historical murals depicting the life of Timur. Looking up, you can see a giant crystal chandelier over 8 m high. The layers of hanging crystal pendants reflect the geometric patterns, marble cladding, and gold-leaf paintings on the dome, making the entire space look magnificent. The main exhibits are concentrated on the second floor, ranging from medieval weapons, armor, maps, and gold and silver coins to jewelry, miniatures, and precious manuscripts. You can also see letters exchanged between Timur and his descendants and European monarchs, as well as scale models of Timurid dynasty architecture. In the central hall, an ancient copy of the Quran is on display. These exhibits weave together the threads of the Timurid Empire's military campaigns, diplomacy, trade, and culture.Uzbekistan · Tashkent

Chorsu Bazaar

4 reviews
Chorsu Bazaar is located in the heart of Tashkent's old city, adjacent to the Kukeldash Madrasah, and is a traditional market that has thrived for centuries. The massive concrete structure supports a huge dome covered in mosaics, where Soviet modernism and Central Asian domed traditions uniquely merge. The main building has multiple levels, and stalls are divided by category: in the fruit and vegetable section, apples, melons, pomegranates, and persimmons are piled high according to the season; another level is dedicated to dried fruits, nuts, and oriental sweets, and you can also buy rice for pilaf and hot naan freshly baked in tandoor ovens on the spot. The open-air area outside the dome has a more local feel, with stalls selling daily necessities, small appliances, clothing, and footwear stretching out. You can also watch artisans crafting bowls, musical instruments, and small boxes on-site. It remains a go-to spot for locals to do their daily shopping, vibrant with local atmosphere.Uzbekistan · Tashkent

The facades and arches are covered with glazed tiles and geometric patterns, and the blue dome is particularly striking in the sunlight, making it a masterpiece of the Timurid era that showcases the empire's grandeur through its magnificent scale. The giant marble Quran stand in the center of the courtyard is a highlight for visitors. This stone carving from the Timurid dynasty was used to hold a giant scripture, and locals can still often be seen stopping by it today.Uzbekistan · Samarkand

Shah-i-Zinda is a "city within a city." A necropolis where you feel like you're in the past, strolling through the narrow streets between the bright blue tombs.

Amir Temur Square is the absolute heart of Tashkent and the perfect spot to start exploring the city.It is basically a huge, green roundabout with a massive bronze statue of Tamerlane on his horse right in the middle. The vibe here is super laid-back, clean, and safe. It gets especially lively in the evenings when the summer heat starts and both locals and tourists come out to stroll.

The Ark of Bukhara is one of the most unmissable historical sites in the city. In the hot days of the summer, this impressive structure is at the peak of its magnificence, emanating an aura from the ancient days when it was a prominent fortress, equipped with cannons, high walls and observation towers that survived the test of time until this day. The interiors of the Ark are accessible with an entrance fee, while the exteriors of the site have good photo and sightseeing spots free of charge.

The museum is located on the north side of Timur Square, and the architecture is very distinctive. It is recommended to do your homework before coming, so that you will have a better experience of the exhibition. We did not hire a guide, and we only knew a little about history, so we could only take a quick look.

Chorzu Bazaar is a must visit whenever in Taskent. Here you can experience the vibrant atmosphere of sellers doing their best to offload their produce. Spices, teas, butchers, bakers, fruit and vegtable stands, you name it. Visit time is best in morning when crowds are big and you get the best feel.
