National Museum of Anthropology

181 reviews
The National Museum of Anthropology opened in September 1964 and holds a significant position in the history of anthropology. It showcases the indigenous civilizations of Mexico, including the Aztec and Maya civilizations. The museum has two floors. The ground level houses 12 exhibition halls showcasing archaeological artifacts from the pre-Hispanic era, presenting the features of ancient American civilizations. The collection includes treasures such as painted human-figure pots, painted ceramic pots, jaguar urns, corn deity incense burners, smiling face figurines, human-face-patterned incense burners, and rain god effigy urns. The Mexica hall displays the iconic 24-ton Sun Stone, a symbolic artifact witnessing the glory of Aztec civilization. The second-floor exhibition area roughly corresponds to the layout of the first floor, focusing on ethnography. It displays the traditional cultures of Mexico's indigenous groups through clothing, musical instruments, weapons, religious artifacts, and daily objects, introducing their cultures, arts, beliefs, and customs. The museum building itself is a classic example of modern Mexican architecture, with its central hall's giant umbrella-shaped stone fountain being a signature view frequently featured on Mexico City postcards. The museum also features introductions to general anthropology, prehistoric times, and early American migration.Mexico City · 20.7 km from Xochimilco

It was originally a refuge for the Aztec wanderers, and later became a summer retreat for the wealthy Aztecs. Formerly used as a military academy, a weather station, it is now a Museum of History (Museo Nacional de Historia). Located in Zone 1 of Chapultepec Park, the in-house museum showcases a long period of history. The symbolic objects of various periods are fascinating. In addition, the museum also has exquisite murals, such as panoramic murals in the sixth exhibition hall. In addition, a large number of paintings, photos and documents are collected here.Mexico City · 19.9 km from Xochimilco

National Autonomous University of Mexicois the main campus of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, located on a rocky plain formed by volcanic lava in the southern part of Mexico City. The campus was built between 1949 and 1952 and was designed by more than 60 architects, engineers, and artists; the university's predecessor can be traced back to the Royal and Pontifical University founded in 1551, with its early buildings concentrated in the historic city center before gradually moving to this new campus in the 1950s. The campus highlights focus on the combination of modernist architecture and murals: the ten-story facade of the Central Library is entirely covered by Juan O'Gorman's giant mosaic mural, with the four facades depicting indigenous civilization before the arrival of the Spanish, the colonial era, and modern Mexico, respectively. It is recognizable from across the lawn and has almost become the campus's calling card.Coyoacan · 11.6 km from Xochimilco

The temple, which sits at the center of the Aztec world, was destroyed by Spanish colonists in 1521 and is now in ruins. There is a museum in the Great Temple, displaying the remains of archaeological discoveries, which is a good demonstration of the ancient civilization of the Aztecs. Entering the ruins of the Great Temple, people can approach it layer by layer along the route excavated by archaeologists. Next to the ruins is the 4-story Museo del Templo Mayor (Museo del Templo Mayor).Mexico City · 20 km from Xochimilco

Xochimilco Ecological Parklocated in the Xochimilco borough in the south of Mexico City, is an urban ecological park built on canals and wetlands. At its heart is the ancient "chinampa" agricultural system: during the Aztec period, ancestors built artificial floating fields on the lake using mud and plants to grow vegetables and flowers, and the waterways left between these fields have become the intricate network of canals seen today. This farming method, which has continued for hundreds of years, is still in use today. When passing by boat, you can see farmers working on the floating fields and the lakeside scenery with rows of willow trees growing along the water's edge. The ecological park features lakes, wetlands, walking trails, and viewing areas, and is home to over 200 species of native and migratory birds, as well as an important habitat for endemic species such as the axolotl. Visitors can walk or cycle along the canals, or take a ride on a colorful traditional wooden boat, known as a "trajinera," to navigate the waterways. Along the way, you can often see flower fields, wetland birds, and scenes of local daily life.Xochimilco · 4.5 km from downtown

Historic center of Mexico Cityis the historic core of Mexico City, extending outwards from the center, and was designated a World Heritage Site in 1987. This area was built on the ruins of Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec Empire, where Spanish conquistadors began rebuilding the city in the 16th century, allowing Aztec ruins and colonial architecture to coexist in the same neighborhood. The entire historic center brings together a vast number of historical buildings from the 16th-century colonial period to the early 20th century, and strolling through it, you can experience the layering and fusion of three historical eras: Aztec civilization, the Spanish colonial period, and modern Mexico.Mexico City · 20.1 km from Xochimilco

Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral

Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Mexico and is one of the largest and oldest of its kind in the Americas. Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical styles are layered upon its facade and interior. Beneath it lies the site of the former Aztec temple complex, where new and old civilizations intersect. The entire building is over 100m long, and the two towers on the main facade are nearly 70m high, housing a total of 25 bronze bells, the largest of which weighs over 10 tons. There are 16 chapels along the sides of the interior, each equipped with altars, oil paintings, and sculptures. The Altar of the Kings at the end of the main nave is carved from cedar and covered in gold leaf. Standing over 20m tall, it is known as the "Golden Cave," and beneath it lies the crypt of the archbishops. Two large 18th-century pipe organs stand on either side of the choir, and the walls of the sacristy are hung with large religious paintings by colonial-era artists Villalpando and Correa. Because it sits on the soft soil of an ancient lakebed, the cathedral has been slowly sinking for centuries, and the interior floor is still noticeably tilted, a trace of time rarely seen elsewhere.Mexico City · 20 km from Xochimilco

Constitution Plaza

4.4/5
145 reviews
Constitution Plaza is the main square in the historic center of Mexico City, though locals prefer to call it by its nickname, "Zócalo." This open space, with sides about 240m long and covering nearly 60,000 square meters, sits on the former site of Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec Empire—after the Spanish destroyed the ancient city, they planned the plaza on the original site in the 16th century. In the 18th century, it became famous for the Parian Market, a hub for merchants. For hundreds of years, it has remained the center of city celebrations and daily life. The name "Constitution" comes from the Spanish Constitution of Cádiz of 1812, while "Zócalo" comes from an interesting piece of history: in the 19th century, there was a plan to build an independence monument in the plaza, but only the base (called "zócalo" in Spanish) was completed. Although the base was long ago removed, the name has stuck and has even become the common term for the main squares in many Mexican cities. Today, the plaza is surrounded by iconic buildings: to the north is the Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral, which blends various colonial styles; the National Palace on the east side houses massive murals by Rivera; to the west is the historic National Pawn Shop building; and the Templo Mayor ruins are located just to the northeast. The Zócalo subway station is right next to the plaza. A flagpole about 50m tall stands in the center of the plaza, where soldiers hold flag-raising and lowering ceremonies every morning and evening. Major celebrations and cultural performances are also often held here. On the eve of Independence Day in mid-September each year, the plaza is filled with celebratory crowds.Mexico City · 19.8 km from Xochimilco

The museum is so beautiful. Very tranquil and peaceful for a visit. It says you a limited to a 1 hour time, but that’s not accurate, you can kind of stay as long as you like. There was no real option of a guide in English or anything. In most museums you can have like an audio guide. But not here. I would also say it’s a little pricy considering the size of the museum. Make sure to book in advance on the official website for the best price.

a must go! It was really awesome going through and learning the history from different parts of Mexico. Last Wednesday of each month, you can go in at night and free of charge, really cool. Not as crowded as the days can be. But a few exhibits are closed, so I will have to go again in the future. haha.

Chapultepec Castle is a truly unique place. It is the only royal castle on the American continent, having served as a military fortress, royal palace, and presidential residence for centuries, and is now a historical museum. This weathered castle sits atop the lush Chapultepec Hill, overlooking the entire city.

It is very large and spacious here, and at the same time very artistic. Basically every building is covered with graffiti. There are very few modern teaching buildings. Most of them are old buildings from the past, but they are very impressive.

On Saturday morning, I took a walk in Mexico City, where traffic suddenly became less, and the air suddenly became better. I walked 2.5 kilometers and felt the joy of exercise. I saw many people in the park area on holidays, and I saw children happily visiting the zoo. Although there were not many animals, the natural ecology was well maintained.

The historic center of Mexico City is centered on the Constitution Square and has many historical buildings, including the National Palace, the Cathedral, the Great Temple, the Art Museum, the Latin American Tower, etc. It has both Mayan relics and many relics left by Spanish colonization. It is the most worth visiting place in Mexico City.

The Mexico City Cathedral is a massive structure constructed of basalt and gray sandstone. Its walls are thick and reinforced with thick iron chains for earthquake resistance. The cathedral is laid out in a traditional Latin cross pattern, with a central nave and two side aisles. The central nave is a long, rectangular structure, 110 meters long from north to south and 55 meters wide from east to west. The altar, deep within the central nave, is covered by a classic Renaissance dome. The vault features numerous ornate arches and reliefs. The side aisles, intersecting the central nave in a cross-shaped pattern, house numerous smaller altars and seven chapels. Some of these chapels have been subsequently renovated and altered by artists from various artistic schools.

Mexico City's Constitution Square is the center of the city. It is said that the very simple buildings around the square are where the president's office is located. As long as you register, you can enter the building for a visit. There is also a magnificent church with amazing interior decoration.
