Longjin Wind and Rain Bridge

4.8/5

Longjin Wind and Rain Bridge spans the Wu River in Zhijiang, Huaihua. First built in the 19th year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty, it was damaged and rebuilt several times over the past 400-plus years, remaining a vital crossing point for travelers and merchants between Hunan and Guizhou. The current bridge structure dates back to a large-scale reconstruction in the late 1990s, which still utilizes traditional Dong wooden construction techniques. The entire bridge is over 200 m long and more than 10 m wide, resting on 16 boat-shaped stone piers with pointed ends facing the current, bonded with a mortar of sticky rice and tung oil. The wooden structure on the bridge is entirely joined by mortise and tenon, without the use of a single nail or rivet. The name "Longjin" is said to be derived from the sight of the boat-shaped piers "spitting water" as they cut through the waves. A long corridor with triple-eaved roofs connects the two banks, interspersed with seven five-story pavilions. With their deep blue glazed tiles and upturned eaves, they look like a long dragon lying on the river from a distance. Nearly 100 stall-style shops line both sides of the bridge, filled with local snacks like pickled radish and Zhijiang duck, as well as Dong silver jewelry and daily goods. The scent of tea drifts from teahouses where locals often sit and relax, making a walk across the bridge feel more like strolling through an old street built over the river. Climbing up to the pavilions in the middle of the bridge offers a bird's-eye view of the stilt houses along both banks of the Wu River, with the nearby Zhijiang Tianhou Temple complementing the bridge. The bronze rhinoceros statue at the bridgehead, covered in Dong patterns, embodies prayers for flood control and peace.Zhijiang · 865m from downtown

The main buildings of Memorial Hall of the Victory of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the Acceptance of Japan’s Surrender include theSurrender Memorial Archway, the Surrender Ceremony Hall of the China Theater, and others. Among them, theSurrender Memorial Archwayis known as the "Arc de Triomphe of China." It stands 8.5m high, 10.46m wide, and 1.15m thick, featuring a blue brick and cement exterior, a "mountain" character-shaped top, four pillars with three arches, and is inlaid with Yuanzhou purple robe jade belt stone. The venue includes the restored surrender hall and an exhibition of surrender materials, housed in a typical 1940s barracks-style building. It utilizes high-tech audio, light, and electrical displays to showcase thousands of important national cultural relics and documents. The memorial hall also includes the former headquarters of the Chinese Army and the Former Site of He Yingqin's Office, where the tables, chairs, and sofas on display are original items from that time. Not far away is Huaihua Zhijiang Airport, which was once the second-largest military airport for the Allied forces in the Far East during World War II. It served as a base for General Claire Lee Chennault's Chinese-American Composite Wing and the United States Fourteenth Air Force. The Sino-American Air Force Club and the airport control tower near the airport are still well-preserved. The corridor-style building of the bridge can shelter pedestrians from wind and rain, and the bridge pavilion is a place for people to rest. The entire wind and rain bridge is a full wooden structure without a single nail or rivet, reflecting the contemporary Dong ethnic garden architectural style. Cultural value Longjin Wind and Rain Bridge is a cultural relic protection unit in Hunan Province. Although Zhijiang is a small and remote county, it was very famous during the Anti-Japanese War. There was an airport for the Flying Tigers here, so the Flying Tigers Memorial Hall is located in Zhijiang. The memorial hall is not big. In addition to the exhibition hall, you can also visit the former site of the Air Force Control Tower. This hall is charged and is open every day throughout the year.

Zhijiang is a beautiful town in western Hunan. Suozi Street, a cluster of stilt buildings by the Wushui River, is about one kilometer long. The colonnade downstairs is a leisure passage for people to shelter from the wind and rain. At dusk, many citizens gather here, enjoying a lazy and comfortable slow life. After the lights are turned on in the evening, the river bank is full of lights and the lights are brilliant. It is very beautiful.

This drum tower is in the Dong ethnic style, quite different from the styles in inland areas. It's a cluster of drum towers, all constructed entirely of wood using mortise and tenon joints, and its color scheme is also unique. The layers of buildings, interspersed with white, create a distinctive aesthetic. Now, it serves as a stage for the local people to perform, with songs rising and falling in waves. Hehe.

Walk 3-400 meters from the Japanese Surrender Memorial Hall to the site. You can get the admission ticket with your ID card. There is a large square in front of the memorial hall, which mainly records the historical facts of the Red Army's resistance against Japan after the Japanese invasion of China. It is a good historical teaching material.

Fenghuang Ancient Town, located in Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hunan Province, is a border town renowned for its literary significance. A national 5A-level tourist attraction, it was praised by New Zealand writer Rewi Alley as "China's most beautiful small town." The Tuojiang River flows gently through the town, with stilted houses standing along its banks and winding ancient cobblestone alleys. This is the spiritual home of Shen Congwen's novel "Border Town," harboring unique Xiangxi charm. In the morning, a thin mist blankets the river; at night, lights reflect on the water. The landscape and culture blend seamlessly, half poetic, half down-to-earth; every step reveals the gentle warmth of time. #TravelRecommendationOfficer #HealingScenery #FenghuangAncientTown #XiangxiTourism
