🗿 Awe-Inspiring Ancient Art at Maijishan Grottoes 🏞️
Explore Tianshui’s Maijishan Cave-Temple Complex, where centuries-old Buddhist sculptures and stunning cliffside carvings create a mystical mountain escape!
Set out early from Huayin for a scenic drive to Tianshui—you'll want to hit Maijishan Cave-Temple Complex right as it opens (08:30–17:30, Apr–Oct; 09:00–17:00, Nov–Mar) to beat the crowd and savor morning mountain mist. The cliff-side walkways let you get close to 7th-century statues and intricate temple reliefs carved right into the rosy rock. Must-do: Climb the dizzying spiral stairs for panoramic views and a unique “floating” perspective over lush valleys—an epic photo spot!
Snap the gigantic Buddha heads at Level 5 and peer down from the upper walkways for the perfect wide angle. For wilder shots, frame the caves against foggy morning light or capture the cliff full of tiny temple windows—so Insta-worthy!
Bring snacks and water; there aren’t many shops up there. Wear comfy shoes—the stairs are steep and can get slippery after rain. My tip: bring a lightweight rain jacket, not an umbrella, since mountain winds can surprise you. Take it slow: the walkways are narrow and busy during holidays, so plan for patience.
If you have time after the caves, Tianshui “old town” is perfect for a quick noodle lunch before heading back to Huayin.
