Du Fu Thatched Cottage is located on Qinghua Road, Qingyang District, Chengdu, Sichuan. It is the former residence of Du Fu, a renowned poet of the Tang Dynasty, during his time in Chengdu. Du Fu lived here for nearly four years and wrote more than 240 poems.
To escape the An Lushan Rebellion, Du Fu and his family traveled from Longyou to Chengdu. With the help of his friend Yan Wu, he built a thatched cottage on the picturesque Huanhua Stream in the western suburbs of Chengdu. After the cottage was completed, it was called "Chengdu Thatched Cottage." He lived here for nearly four years and wrote more than 200 poems.
After Yan Wu died, Du Fu lost his only support and had to leave Chengdu with his family. Two years later, he drifted to Jingzhou and Xiangzhou via the Three Gorges. After Du Fu left Chengdu, the thatched cottage was destroyed.
The four characters "Shaoling Thatched Cottage" were written by Prince Guo Yuli, the 17th son of Emperor Kangxi and the brother of Emperor Yongzheng. The plaque with the two characters "Thatched Cottage" on the main gate was also written by him.
The three characters "Dayatang" on the plaque were written by the famous Tang Dynasty calligrapher Yan Zhenqing.
At the end of the Tang Dynasty, the poet Wei Zhuang found the site of the thatched cottage and rebuilt it. It was preserved and repaired and expanded during the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. The thatched cottage covers an area of nearly 300 mu and retains the architectural style of the 13th year of the Hongzhi period of the Ming Dynasty and the 16th year of the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty. It is simple and elegant, with beautiful gardens. It is a sacred place in the history of Chinese literature and one of the must-see attractions in Chengdu.
In 1955, the Du Fu Memorial Hall was established, and in 1985, it was renamed the Chengdu Du Fu Thatched Cottage Museum. The core cultural relics area includes a screen wall, main gate, main hall, Poetry History Hall, Chaimen, and Gongbu Temple.
Du Fu Thatched Cottage in Chengdu, Sichuan, is known as a "sacred place in the history of Chinese literature." It is the former residence of the "Poet Sage" Du Fu, who lived here for nearly four years to escape the An Lushan Rebellion. More than 240 of his poems have been passed down to this day, including the timeless classics "Happy Rain on a Spring Night" and "Song of the Thatched Cottage Broken by the Autumn Wind."
Enter the main gate of Du Fu Thatched Cottage, cross the stone bridge, and you will see a magnificent and bright hall. "Different generations, different times, ask such a river and mountain, how many poets are there; the gentleman also lives in exile, and there is a long stay in the world, the moon is white and the wind is clear, a thatched cottage." This was originally written by Gu Fuchu in the early Qing Dynasty, but unfortunately, it no longer exists. The ink seen today was rewritten by the famous calligrapher Shao Zhang after the liberation.
The Poetry History Hall is the main building on the central axis. Du Fu left more than 1,400 poems, which truly recorded the history before and after the An Lushan Rebellion and the rise and fall of the Tang Dynasty. Therefore, his poems are called "poetry history," and the Poetry History Hall is named after them. In the middle of the hall is a statue of Du Fu carved by the famous sculptor Liu Kaiqu.
If you are not familiar with the history, it is recommended to join a group tour with a guide or rent an electronic guide to better understand Du Fu's life. The guide is quite good, and you can listen while walking. You can visit the entire courtyard. Without a guide, you may just walk around and waste the ticket.

Stepping into Du Fu Thatched Cottage, the red walls and bamboo shadows reflect each other, and the lush greenery along the Huanhua Stream instantly washes away the city's hustle and bustle. The couplets in the Poetry History Hall and the inscriptions in the Ministry of Works Ancestral Hall hold a thousand-year-old cultural heritage. The column bases and pottery shards from the Tang Dynasty ruins allow visitors to touch the traces of the poet-sage's life. Poems inscribed on the floor tiles are readily available, and the cultural atmosphere is overwhelming. However, the core thatched cottage is a replica, lacking the feel of antiquity; it's heavily commercialized, with numerous and overpriced cultural and creative shops. Tour groups and study tour groups flock there, making it noisy and difficult to find peace. For tourists unfamiliar with Du Fu's poetry, some attractions may seem a bit dull. However, as a poetic oasis in the city, the fusion of nature and culture is still worth experiencing. Avoiding peak times and taking your time to explore allows you to truly appreciate its charm.
Beautiful place must see in chengdu! Garden is beautiful good place to spent there for relaxing
I took my child there in May. If you like historical figures, poetry, and prose, it's a great place to visit. The environment is beautiful, and the bamboo forest and thatched cottages are very appealing to people from Northeast China. Unfortunately, we should have hired a guide, as that would have made the overall experience even better. It's definitely worth a visit.
Du Fu Thatched Cottage in Chengdu - Recalling the Footsteps of the Poet Chengdu, this charming historical and cultural city, has produced countless treasures, and Du Fu Thatched Cottage is one of the shining pearls. ✨✨✨✨✨ It is like a three-dimensional history book, quietly telling the story of the poet Du Fu, attracting tourists from all over the world to explore. 🤔 Overview of the Thatched Cottage 🍁 Du Fu Thatched Cottage covers a vast area, with a simple and elegant architectural style, integrating the beauty of traditional gardens. 🌴🌴 Every blade of grass, every brick and every tile here exudes a strong cultural atmosphere, 🌴not only a remembrance and memorial of Du Fu, but also a model of the perfect combination of ancient Chinese poetry culture and garden ☘️ art. Walking through it, it seems that you can see Du Fu reciting poems and lyrics here, worrying about the country and the people. 👣👣 It is said that in the winter of 759 AD, in order to avoid the "Anshi Rebellion", Du Fu brought his family from Longyou to Sichuan. With the help of relatives and friends, a thatched cottage was built on the picturesque Huanhua Creek in the western suburbs of Chengdu, and the "Chengdu Thatched Cottage" was completed. 🏡 Here, Du Fu's poetry creation is mostly filled with pastoral atmosphere. Poems such as "Tangcheng", "Jiangcun", and "Spring Night Joy Rain" are like fresh pastoral paintings,💋 showing before our eyes. And works such as "Song of the Thatched Cottage Destroyed by the Autumn Wind", "Hate to Part", "Sick Orange", and "Dry Palm" have touched people's hearts with their profound realistic brushstrokes and become immortal works. 👌🏻 When we came to the main gate of the thatched cottage, a sparkling river ✨✨ flowed around, which is the Huanhua Creek mentioned repeatedly in Du Fu's poems. 🌿🌿 🤔There is a touching story about the origin of the poetic name "Huanhua Creek". 👉 It is said that during the Tang Dynasty, there was a girl named Ren who lived by the creek. She was not only beautiful, but also kind-hearted. One day, when she was washing clothes by the creek, she met a monk with wounds all over his body. Others avoided him, but she did not avoid him. 🍀🍀🍀 The monk took off his cassock stained with pus and blood and asked her to wash it. Miss Ren agreed happily. The magical thing is that as soon as the cassock entered the water, lotus flowers bloomed all over the creek in an instant. When the monk looked again, he had disappeared without a trace. People were amazed and named this river Huanhua Creek from then on. 🍀🍀🍀 In the Tang Dynasty, Huanhua Creek was wide and deep, and large boats could sail on it. The scenery along its banks was beautiful. 🛶🛶 Du Fu's "Quatrain" vividly depicts this beautiful scenery: "Two yellow rocs sing in the green willows, a line of egrets fly into the blue sky. The window contains the eternal snow of the Western Hills, and the door is moored with ships from Dongwu."🍁The two characters "Caotang" on the plaque of the main gate were written by Prince Guo, the seventeenth son of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty and the younger brother of Emperor Yongzheng. The writing is vigorous and the charm is long. 🍂🍂🍂
