🌟 **【Highlights: Explore Ancient Irrigation Wisdom Along the Waterways】**
The highlights of Dujiangyan Scenic Area are concentrated; it’s recommended to allocate **half a day to a full day**.
**Classic tour route recommendation (upstream for a more impressive experience):**
Lidui Park Entrance → Baopingkou → Feishayan → Yuzui → Anlan Suspension Bridge → Erwang Temple → Qinyan Tower → Yulei Pass → Exit
1️⃣ **Lidui Park & Baopingkou (First Stop: Water Control Throat)**
Enter through Lidui Park’s main gate, and the first sight is the “Fulong View” commemorating the father and son Li Bing. **Baopingkou** is the mountain mouth artificially carved by Li Bing and his son, shaped like a bottle neck, serving as the water intake for the inner river, controlling the water volume entering the Chengdu Plain. Standing on the viewing platform, watching the Min River water precisely diverted, you’ll admire the ancients’ accurate calculations.
2️⃣ **Feishayan (Second Stop: Wisdom of Flood Discharge and Sediment Removal)**
A short walk leads to “Feishayan.” It looks inconspicuous but is the “safety valve” of Dujiangyan. **Function:** When the inner river’s water volume is too large, floodwater overflows Feishayan, automatically discharging into the outer river, while centrifugal force throws sediment into the outer river, achieving sediment removal. The design is astonishingly ingenious.
3️⃣ **Yuzui (Third Stop: The Miracle of Water Division)**
Continuing forward, you reach Dujiangyan’s “heart”—the **Yuzui Water Dividing Dam**. **Function:** It splits the rushing Min River into two: the inner river and the outer river. The inner river irrigates, the outer river discharges floodwater and sediment. During dry seasons, the inner river takes 60% of the water to ensure irrigation; during floods, the outer river takes 60% to reduce disasters. This is the famous “40-60 water division, 20-80 sediment discharge.”
4️⃣ **Anlan Suspension Bridge (Fourth Stop: Swaying History)**
Spanning the inner river, the Anlan Suspension Bridge, also called the “Couples Bridge,” is one of Dujiangyan’s iconic sights. Walking on the swaying suspension bridge, with rushing water below and green mountains on both sides, it’s thrilling yet pleasant! Hold the handrails tightly, walk slowly, and enjoy the scenery on both banks.
5️⃣ **Erwang Temple & Qinyan Tower (Fifth Stop: Gratitude and Overlook)**
After crossing Anlan Suspension Bridge is **Erwang Temple**, dedicated to Li Bing and his son, with bustling incense offerings. Here you can learn about their lives and the history of Dujiangyan’s construction. **Qinyan Tower**, located on a high spot beside Erwang Temple, is the **best place to overlook the entire Dujiangyan**! The three core projects—Yuzui, Feishayan, and Baopingkou—are all in view, spectacular and perfect for photos!
6️⃣ **Yulei Pass & Nanqiao (Optional: Climb for Views and Night Scenery)**
If you have the energy, climb **Yulei Pass**, an ancient military fortress overlooking Dujiangyan city and the Min River scenery. After touring the scenic area, don’t forget to stroll around **Nanqiao**. By day, it’s an ancient bridge with carved beams and painted rafters; by night, it lights up brilliantly, a landmark of Dujiangyan’s nightlife.
💡 **【Blogger’s Private Tips: Make Your Trip Perfect】**
1. **Best time to visit:** Spring and autumn for pleasant weather. Summer has abundant water for more spectacular flood discharge scenes but beware of heat and sun. Winter is relatively quiet.
2. **Recommend hiring a guide or renting an audio guide:** The essence of Dujiangyan lies in its hydraulic principles and historical background; explanations help you better understand the wisdom.
3. **Wear comfortable shoes:** There’s a lot of walking inside the scenic area; comfortable sneakers are recommended.
4. **Avoid crowds:** Try to visit on weekdays or early morning at opening or late afternoon near closing for a better experience.
5. **Recommended combined trips:**
* **Qingcheng Mountain:** “Seek Tao at Qingcheng Mountain,” not far from Dujiangyan, can be arranged for 1-2 days to experience the tranquility of this famous Taoist mountain.
* **Panda Valley:** Near Dujiangyan Scenic Area, you can see adorable giant pandas.
6. **For photography lovers:** Qinyan Tower, Yuzui, Anlan Suspension Bridge, and Nanqiao night scenes are excellent photo spots. Soft light in early morning and evening makes for better shots.
7. **Respect the culture:** Please keep quiet and follow rules when visiting temples and historic sites.
Dujiangyan is not just a “scenic spot” but a symbol of spirit. It shows us that humans can live in harmony with nature, using nature rather than conquering it. When you stand before the rushing river, feeling the unceasing vitality of two thousand years, you will deeply respect the wisdom of the ancients and better understand the meaning of “benefiting the present and the future.”
Come to Sichuan, don’t just eat hotpot and see pandas—be sure to set aside a day for Dujiangyan. This “gift” from over two thousand years ago will surely make your trip worthwhile and fulfilling!

Going to the Dujiangyan Scenic Area, the fish mouth water dike really shocked me! Standing there, watching the water of the Lijiang River is divided into two, the irrigation of the inner river, the flood discharge of the outer river, it is really amazing! More than 2,000 years ago, Li Bing and his son did not rely on high technology, relying on wisdom and hands, built such a cattle project, and still play a role. I thought at the time that the wisdom of the ancients was really not covered. This trip is worth it. Dujiangyan Yuzui Water Dividing Dike is really worth everyone to see!
Watch the water conservancy project park during the Warring States Period and feel the wisdom and outstanding talents of the ancient working people. The scenery is pleasant and the environment is quiet. It is worth seeing. Baopingkou, Yuzui, Anlan Bridge and Husband and Wife Bridge, the scenic area is very large and you can play for two days!
The combination of the power of nature and the wisdom of the working people is very spectacular. It's a pity that I can't take photos. It's worth a visit. Unfortunately, we went there on a rainy day and didn't go to many places.
"Yuzui" is the water diversion project of Dujiangyan, named for its shape like a fish mouth. It rises above the center of the Minjiang River and divides the Minjiang River into two rivers, the inner and outer rivers. The western part is called the outer river, commonly known as the "Jinma River", which is the main stream of the Minjiang River and is mainly used for flood discharge; the eastern part along the foot of the mountain is called the inner river, which is an artificial water diversion channel and is mainly used for irrigation.
[Scenery] This fish mouth watershed is really a very clever idea. It guides and diverts water very well. The fish mouth-like dam built with pebbles divides the Minjiang River into the inner river and the outer river. The inner river is used for irrigation, and the outer river is used for flood discharge. It nourishes the Chengdu Basin very well.
As the name suggests, the Fish Mouth Diversion Dike refers to a diversion dike shaped like a fish mouth. This is the essence of the Dujiangyan Water Conservancy Project. It stands in the center of the Minjiang River and divides the Minjiang River into two rivers, the inner and outer rivers. The western part is called the outer river, commonly known as the "Jinma River", which is the main stream of the Minjiang River and is mainly used for flood discharge; the eastern part along the foot of the mountain is called the inner river, which is an artificial water diversion channel and is mainly used for irrigation. The significance of the fish mouth lies in the role of diversion and sedimentation of the bifurcated river. The river water flows down in the rainy season and flows into the outer river; and in the dry season, enough water is retained and flows into the inner river, thus making the Chengdu Plain fertile. The fish mouth project is almost the last part of the Dujiangyan Scenic Area, and the distance from the main entrance is a little far. The ticket for the Dujiangyan Scenic Area is 80 yuan. You need to swipe your ID card to enter when buying tickets on site and booking online. It is a pity that there is no paper ticket to take. You can visit the attractions on the ticket in order. There are sightseeing buses to Yuzui, which only cost 30 yuan for a round trip. The price is not expensive, but there are a lot of people queuing. You should know that Dujiangyan Scenic Area is a world heritage site, and it is crowded even in the off-season, so it is recommended to walk there. The entire scenic area can be visited in depth in just 5-6 hours. Recommended tour route: Dujiangyan Scenic Area Lidui Gate → Wotie Square → Qingxi Garden → Fulong Temple → Baopingkou → Feishayan → Yuzui. After visiting Yuzui, walk across the Anlan Cable Bridge to go up the mountain to the Weir Gong Hall, Erwang Temple, Songmao Ancient Road, Yulei Pass, Mawang Temple, City God Temple and other attractions. Group tours often return to the scenic area here, and you must walk the second half of the way to go up the mountain to overlook the spectacular Yuzui project and the panoramic view of the entire Dujiangyan Scenic Area. The water diversion project of Dujiangyan is named Yuzui because the diversion embankment is shaped like a fish mouth. It stands tall in the center of the Minjiang River, dividing the Minjiang River into two rivers, the inner and outer rivers. When the Minjiang River passes through the mountains and ridges, it is divided into the inner and outer rivers at the Dujiangyan head after leaving Aba Prefecture. After the inner river is divided again, it becomes the main water source of the Dujiangyan irrigation area. The outer side is the main stream of the Minjiang River, which flows southward through Leshan City to receive the Dadu River and Qingyi River, and then enters the Yangtze River in Yibin.
Yuzui is a slope-like dam with its front end deep in the water and its rear end above the water surface. The river water is divided into two here. This is the first diversion facility of the Dujiangyan Water Conservancy Project. Through a series of engineering facilities such as Yuzui diversion dam, Baopingkou, Feishayan, etc., the purpose of controlling the amount of water flowing into the Chengdu Plain is achieved. It is a smart project.
