Yangtianwo Square is a plaza in the city, located right next to the Ancient Town of Guan County. As it is located at the source of the Tianfu Greenway, it is also considered the starting point for this regional greenway's slow-traffic system, making it a convenient stop before or after exploring the ancient town and Dujiangyan.
What makes this place famous is the giant sculpture in the center of the square known as the "Selfie Panda." Designed by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman, who is renowned for his giant animal installations, it lies on its back with its feet up, holding a giant mobile phone to take a selfie, looking incredibly adorable. It is even larger than the climbing panda at Chengdu IFS, measuring over 20 m in length and weighing more than 100 tons. Its "fur" is made of millions of fixed, lacquered stainless steel wires, giving it a fluffy appearance from a distance and a cool, metallic texture up close. The inspiration for the creation came from a real event in 2005 when a wild giant panda wandered into downtown Dujiangyan. The artist used the humorous concept of a panda coming into the city to "take a selfie" to capture this interesting story in the heart of the city.
The square has a sunken design, so the panda is barely visible from the street level and can be easily missed if you are just passing by. You need to go down into the square to see it in its entirety. Because of this elevation difference, you can take photos from various angles to get unique shots.
