Suomenlinna Fortress — A World Cultural Heritage Site
Suomenlinna Fortress, also known as "Finland Fortress," is one of Finland's most iconic historical landmarks and is praised as the "shining pearl on the outer sea of Helsinki." In 1991, it was designated as a "World Cultural Heritage" site by UNESCO.
Suomenlinna Fortress is located on the Suomenlinna Islands in the outer sea of Helsinki. Its architectural layout is star-shaped. It is not a single castle but a large-scale maritime military fortress complex spanning six islands in the outer sea of Helsinki. The entire complex has a unique layout and is one of the largest existing coastal defense military fortresses in the world. It preserves a large number of well-preserved historical buildings such as batteries, forts, barracks, and city walls, serving as a model for studying 18th-century military defense engineering:
The King's Gate: The symbol of Suomenlinna Fortress, built in 1753, used for military parades. Legend has it that the founder, the Swedish king, anchored his ship at the very spot where the King's Gate now stands during an inspection.
The Jetty Barracks: Built in the 19th century, it was once a barracks during the Tsarist rule. Today, it houses a recording studio, the island's post office, a pharmacy, restaurants, galleries, and more.
There are also dozens of museums on the Suomenlinna Islands, such as the Suomenlinna Museum, Coast Artillery Museum, Vesikko Submarine Museum, Toy Museum, and others. Exhibits cover everything from military history to daily life, making it an important window into Finnish history. Additionally, the Suomenlinna Church, built in 1854, blends its rustic charm with modern life.
I first took tram line 2 from Helsinki city center to Kauppatori station, then boarded a ferry at Kauppatori pier to visit Suomenlinna Fortress. The ferry ticket costs about 3.8 euros one way and about 6.5 euros round trip. The ticket is valid for 12 hours and can be purchased at self-service machines either at the pier or on the island. Suomenlinna Fortress is open year-round, all day, and can be visited in all seasons with free tour maps available. I visited in the summer.

The city of Helsinki, close to the Baltic Sea, is very beautiful and has unparalleled geographical advantages. It can reach St. Petersburg, Russia, and then Moscow by land. Therefore, Finland is a very important country in Europe. The importance of Finland can be seen in several world wars.
Suomenlinna is built on eight islands about 4 kilometers southeast of the center of Helsinki, the capital of Finland. It was originally called the Swedish Castle. The Swedish king began to build this fortress in 1748 to defend against Russian expansion. During the Finnish War, Russia began to occupy the fortress until Finland's independence in 1918.

The ferry docked, and before landing on the island, I was stunned by the scenery in front of me. Everything was wrapped in ice and snow, and everything was silvery white! Although I grew up in the north, this was the first time I saw such a winter scenery! The temperature in Helsinki rose, and the snow came one after another. The snow in Northern Europe is so bold that it often accumulates overnight, like cotton candy. That day, I couldn't forget Suomenlinna Island, so despite the heavy snow, I boarded the ferry again. Suomenlinna Island in the snow has changed its appearance. It is still a silvery white world, but it clearly has another charm. As far as the eye can see, it seems to be a completely frozen and isolated world, as if even time has been frozen.
