No crowded crowds, only ancient cities full of heavy historical atmosphere, breathtaking landscapes, and super cheap carbs for happiness! I've put together this 5 days 4 nights itinerary, beginners can just copy it directly, no detours, no pitfalls~
🗓️ Itinerary Plan (Enter and exit from Taiyuan, no backtracking)
Day 1: Arrive in Taiyuan → Food Street → Bell Tower Street
After landing in Taiyuan, first go to the hotel to drop off luggage, then head straight to Food Street in the afternoon! You must try the old vinegar ice cream (curious but delicious 😋), tou nao (brain dish), guo you rou (fried pork), and knife-cut noodles, all for about 50 RMB per person until you're full. In the evening, stroll around Bell Tower Street, with red lanterns hanging up creating a great atmosphere, perfect for photos and check-ins~
Day 2: Taiyuan → Pingyao Ancient City (1.5-hour drive)
It’s recommended to stay in a guesthouse inside the ancient city! Open the window to see blue bricks and black tiles, avoid the crowds in the morning to walk the city wall, rent a set of Hanfu for photos (about 80 RMB per person including makeup and styling). Must-visit: Rishengchang Exchange Shop, Xietongqing Qianzhuang (you can enter the underground vault), Pingyao County Government Office (with performances). In the evening, enjoy the ancient city night view and have a bowl of Pingyao beef knife-cut noodles, so cozy~
Day 3: Pingyao Ancient City → Qiao Family Courtyard → Qixian
In the morning, visit Qiao Family Courtyard, the filming location of "Raise the Red Lantern," with exquisite brick, wood, and stone carvings, you can feel the glory of the Shanxi merchants 💰 It’s recommended to hire a guide (50 RMB), otherwise it’s easy to not understand. In the afternoon, return to Qixian to eat the local specialties Qixian sausage and fried oil cake, stay overnight in Qixian, which is more cost-effective than Pingyao~
Day 4: Qixian → Hukou Waterfall (3-hour drive)
Be sure to set off early! The shock of Hukou Waterfall can only be understood by seeing it with your own eyes! The Yellow River water rushes and roars, mist hits your face, even on cloudy days it’s very majestic 🌊 It’s recommended to wear non-slip shoes and bring a light jacket (it’s cool by the water). On the way back in the afternoon, you can go to Jixian to eat Yellow River carp, the meat is very tender~
Day 5: Taiyuan → Jin Temple → Return
On the last day, visit Jin Temple! The earliest existing royal sacrificial garden in China, with ancient cypresses and Zhou cypresses full of historical feel, don’t miss the Nannao Spring and the Maid statues, experience the charm of thousand-year-old architecture. After touring, go to Taiyuan Ancient County Town to buy some old vinegar and Pingyao beef as souvenirs, ending a pleasant trip~

The beauty of Shanxi is the heavy sense of history accumulated over time, the grandeur of its mountains and rivers, perfect for those who like slow travel and history~ Hurry up and save this to start your trip!
The driver was very attentive and responsible throughout the trip, even sharing historical anecdotes and explaining the sights. He was also very focused while leading the tour. The vehicle was clean and odor-free, making for a comfortable ride. Knowing some of us hadn't had breakfast, the driver stopped briefly to let us buy some steamed buns. There was no hard selling or sales pitches throughout the entire trip. It was a very satisfying journey.
As China's second largest waterfall and the world's largest yellow waterfall, Hukou Waterfall is renowned for its magnificent spectacle, described as "the Yellow River flowing for a thousand miles, all contained in a single pot." A visit here is definitely worthwhile!
As China's second largest waterfall and the world's largest yellow waterfall, Hukou Waterfall is renowned for its magnificent spectacle, described as "the Yellow River flowing for a thousand miles, all contained in a single pot." A visit here is definitely worthwhile!
Starting from Qinhuangdao, we traveled nearly 1,000 kilometers to Hukou Waterfall in Linfen, Shanxi. It was very spectacular. The feeling of being there was different. It really shocked me. It was completely different from the picture. The picture could not show its magnificence. It is a place worth visiting.
The Hukou Waterfall Scenic Area in Shanxi Province is characterized by its spectacular natural landscape, unique geological wonders and profound cultural heritage, mainly as follows: The waterfall is magnificent: Hukou Waterfall is the only large waterfall on the Yellow River. The main waterfall is about 50 meters wide and has a drop of more than 30 meters. The river water pours down from the narrow Hukou, with thunderous sound and mist, showing a shocking power and momentum. Spring: Peach blossoms are in full bloom, which contrasts with the melting ice on the riverside, forming the "March Peach Blossom Flood". The water volume of the waterfall gradually increases, and the spring is full of vitality. Summer: The water volume reaches the maximum, the waterfall is magnificent, and the water flow is surging. It is the best season to watch the spectacular scene of the waterfall. Autumn: After the rainy season, the waterfall still has abundant water flow, the autumn breeze is refreshing, and occasionally a rainbow can be seen across the sky. The scenery is magnificent and is called the "Hukou Autumn Wind". Winter: The waterfall is partially frozen, forming a rare wonder of icicles, icicles and flowing river water intertwined, like an ice and snow kingdom in a fairy tale world. Geological wonders: The "Hukou" terrain is formed due to the steep drop of the riverbed. The river water pours down from the fault cliff, impacting the "Dragon Trough" deep pool about 40 meters deep. This special geological structure creates the unique landscape of Hukou Waterfall. The splashing water of the waterfall forms a sky full of water mist. Under the sunlight, gorgeous rainbows often appear, and there are also magical natural phenomena such as "rain in the clear sky" and "neon in the sky", which are breathtaking. Long history and culture: Hukou Waterfall is one of the symbols of Chinese culture. The ancient ferry ruins nearby have witnessed the history of Yellow River shipping. The "dry land boat" transportation method in the Ming and Qing Dynasties also left rich historical and cultural relics. Source of artistic creation inspiration: In 1938, the poet Guang Weiran wrote the lyrics of "Yellow River Cantata" after witnessing the magnificent scenery of the Yellow River in Hukou, making it a classic in the history of Chinese music, and Hukou Waterfall has become more famous in the world. Rich folk culture: There are often folk performances such as Ansai waist drum in the scenic area. Tourists can also experience traditional means of transportation such as sheepskin rafts and donkeys, feel the rich folk customs of northern Shaanxi, taste local specialties such as Yellow River carp, and deeply understand the connotation of Yellow River culture. The Hukou Waterfall Scenic Area on the Shanxi side can overlook the panoramic view of the waterfall from a close distance, feel the shock of the "Dragon Trough" rapids, and stand on the waterfall viewing platform to more truly experience the visual impact and spiritual shock brought by the waterfall. The Hukou Waterfall Scenic Area in Shanxi combines natural scenery, geological wonders and cultural heritage, providing tourists with a feast of vision and soul.
The scenery is indeed spectacular. There are many people even on non-holidays. If you go there early, the sun will shine and you will see a rainbow, but it will soon be overcast and disappear. You cannot drive in and can only take the scenic area bus, which is only about two kilometers and 20 yuan is a bit expensive. The Dragon Cave also charges an additional fee which is not very reasonable.
The scenery of the waterfall varies in each season. In spring, the glaciers melt, ice falls, and the giant dragon raises waves, the sound is like thunder, giving people a shocking sense of power; in summer, the river is surging, the turbid waves are emptied, the water volume of the waterfall reaches the maximum, and the majestic momentum makes people feel thrilling; in autumn, the fog is in the sky, the wind and rain are blurred, and the water of the Yellow River is sparkling under the sunset, like a poem and a painting, showing a different kind of beauty; in winter, the river is frozen, the icicles are upside down, and the whole waterfall seems to be frozen into a huge ice sculpture, crystal clear and spectacular. Hukou Waterfall is not only a treasure of natural landscape, but also a symbol of history and culture. It has witnessed countless historical changes and the rise and fall of nations. There are records about Hukou in "Shangshu·Yugong", and the legend of Dayu's flood control has been passed down here for thousands of years. During the Anti-Japanese War, Guang Weiran wrote the passionate poem "Yellow River" here, and Xian Xinghai composed the music for it, which gave birth to the famous "Yellow River Cantata", which inspired the Chinese people to fight bravely against the enemy and became a symbol of the Chinese national spirit. Standing in front of Hukou Waterfall, looking at the surging Yellow River, it seems that you can feel the tenacious and courageous spirit of the Chinese nation. Every drop of water carries the memory of history, and every turbulent wave stirs the pride of the nation. Hukou Waterfall is the soul of the Yellow River and the symbol of the Chinese national spirit. It attracts countless people to come and admire it with its majestic power and endless charm, allowing people to appreciate the magnificence of nature and feel the greatness of the Chinese nation.
I have visited Hukou Waterfall before. However, it was winter, and the water was not as strong as it is now. The Yellow River is the boundary river between Shanxi and Shaanxi. The west of Hukou Waterfall is Hukou Township, Yichuan County, Yan'an City, Shaanxi Province, and the east is Hukou Town, Ji County, Linfen City, Shanxi Province. I personally think the Ji County side is more beautiful, and the Yichuan side seems to have built a wall along the riverside road. Hukou Waterfall is the second largest waterfall in China and the largest yellow waterfall in the world. At this point in the Yellow River, the cliffs on both sides are steep, and the river mouth shrinks like a Hukou. I was lucky this time. It was still raining heavily on the road, but when I arrived, the clouds cleared and the sun rose. The Yellow River has a huge water force, pouring down from the steep cliffs more than 20 meters high, majestic and magnificent. "A thousand miles of Yellow River is closed in a pot."
